  • Who's the guy hosting?

  • @Chalky2007 Dominic West . From the wire

  • @theecatindahat Thanks.

  • Highland Council believe in global warm and they are shit.

  • james is right. ice does displace the same amount of water solid as it would when liquid ie the level wont rise. however thats only true for ice which is in/on the ocean and not for snow/ice/glaciers on land. when snow melts on eg antartica it runs off the land and into the sea - raising the sea levels.

also another point not mentioned is when something heats up, it expands. when you warm up the oceans (being so huge) they would collectively increase in height my a minute amount (say 10 metres).

  • @421ikoom Also, doesn't water expand when it freezes? I'm not sure what effect that would have/has on sea levels, but reading you're comment just reminded me of it.

  • @moon666watcher yeah it does expand but it also floats. about 10% is above the surface. the mass remains the same and the volume increases so density increases.

the amount of water an iceberg displaces is equal to the amount of water produced from melting the iceberg.

  • @421ikoom ahh, yeah that makes sense. Cheers dude!

  • I love that Reg rescues his joke.

  • Shhhh all you wankers trying to sound smart shut up for a sec James May and Reginald D. Hunter are talking

  • I know just how to respond to a humorous clip of a satirical TV programme. Have a big, pointless debate on global warming in the comments section! Yeah that sounds like fun! We can all pretend we know what we're talking about, when most of us haven't a fucking clue.

  • @Jdrizzz So someone out there is still sane. I salute you sir.

  • You lot are aware that this is just a clip from a satirical topical news quiz, right? :-P Keyword here being 'satirical' as in to ridicule for the sake of laughs. Basically they were taking the Mickey out of what is happening in all these replies right now. Clearly these guys are no real experts nor was it a genuine discussion; it's all purely aimed to entertain :-)

  • It's the LAND ice that's going to cause the problems, not ice that's already floating on the sea. And there's a lot of land ice (e.g. glaciers) melting as a result of global warming. Perhaps James May SHOULD read the Guardian each morning.

  • Global warming is the biggest problem for us?? Nope, well before global warming will affect us massively, we will be short on resources. That is the bigger problem people, over population, not this little global warming fiasco.

  • Was this before or after reginald said richard hammond sounded like a pedophile ?

  • That's right, the weight of the ice has already increased the height of the water so how would the water height increase when the ice melts.

  • @BratCaveOnlineTV

    Okay. Global Warming is bs.

Climate Change, however, is true. In fact, since it is a scientific fact, let's not capitalize them like they were some special German words. You can argue if it's caused ONLY by humans, but you can't say that climate change is wrong.

  • I have in fact performed extensive research into cubes of frozen water melting in alcoholic mediums.

I would send the experimental results to Mr May but I cant remember who I am.

  • ahaha they always forgot about south pole.. that's not just a gigantic icecube over the sea, that's a continent covered in ice, wich will melt rising the ocean level. It's good to have a laugh but not to make people think "this global warming thing is bullshit"

  • he wants to drink his data. heheheh

  • it didnt get any higher because he was drinking the gin and tonic.. in case anyone didnt get the joke..

  • @TheTraveler12 it wasn't a joke. He was referring to the fact that most of the polar ice cap is already displacing water. Therefore if they do melt the volume of water in the ocean does not increase.

  • @Gausey it was a joke.. since he was talking about a drink.. listen again

  • @TheTraveler12 no, man, he's talking about ice displacing water. it's not a joke.

  • @bossmonkeykj i know hes talking about the ice displacing the water.. he is using it as the base for a joke..

  • press 9 to control the eyes of captain slow!

  • What James is saying is correct, if all icebergs melted there wouldn't be a change. But the polar caps would, because there is land under some of them, and unlike ice bergs they are not already 2/3 under the surface.

To follow James' analogy, he would need to put two ice cubes in his G&T. One in the drink itself and one on a biscuit floating in his drink. He would then find that the water level did indeed rise. It's good to experiment like James did, but make it as fair and unbiased as possible

  • @randar3 wrong. The northern polar ice cap is floating sea ice. But thanks for playing. The Southern pole is a land mass covered in ice sheeting.

  • @Gausey That's what I meant hen I said 'land under some of them'. The some I'm referring to is part of the southern continent. The remaining part of the southern and all of the northern continents are essentially like ice cubes in a drink and won't cause an increase in sea levels. But the parts that have land under them would cause sea levels to rise if they melted.

  • @Gausey correct. the icecap on the northpole is like a giant iceberg. and when water melts from the top it gets lighter, which means it gets lighter, so it rises and the melten water fills in the gap underneath.

that does not count for the south pole (antartica) bacause it is a continent and it has land underneath it.

In other words; if the north pole melts, it's okay. If the southpole melts, we're screwed.

  • "will you send your data over to me later?" LOL

  • I know nothing about global warming, but I feel like I trust the guy who read the paper that morning slightly more than the guy who did an experiement with ice cubes in his drink.

  • @MrBuch169169

James May is actually quite knowledgeable in the scientific and technological stuff, when he isn't joking around and putting ice cubes in all sorts of things I think you would be better off with him ;-)

  • @drevar Perhaps you would, or perhaps you would be better off without either of them. Jame's May is not a scientist - he is an idividual with an interest in science and people should not look to him for answers.

The liquid may remain the same in the glass, however it is thermal expansion of the liquid that is the issue. This is a rudementary concept that he should have come across, however he is incapable of looking past his own bias on the subject and has been convinced by stupidity.

  • @KonijNx2 James meant he was drinking some G & T as the ice cubes melted, it's the basis of the joke, he perfectly understood that ice melting would refill the glass to an extent. You're the idiot here. Also ignoring how heat causes slight expansion, it's the ice that would otherwise be above water melting and adding to the ocean that causes the rise, not the bollox your on about unless the oceans heat up dramatically.

  • @SuckMyRightToe Oh the irony. "it's the ice that would otherwise be above water melting and adding to the ocean that causes the rise" Unless you're talking about land ice then this is a load of laughable tosh.

Additionally, it is the consensus that the biggest cause of sea level rise in the next 100 years is going to be due to thermal expansion. Because of the volume of water 'dramatic' increases in temperature aren't neccesary, but I thought this was obvious.

    Imbecile.

  • @KonijNx2 Can't find your latest comment, know it's nonsense though. I'd suggest trying the ice cube test on a bigger scale so you can measure precisely, a certain amount of water would be displaced by the weight of the ice cube floating but more so if it melts into the water . The mass floating above the water is not equal to the space that melting ice would create, this means more water will be displaced, simple

  • @SuckMyRightToe The Antarctic and Greenland ice caps are above land ,not floating ,so if they melted it would be a major problem. My 5 Litre BMW has air con ,so I should be ok ,and I can afford a boat from all the investments I made in Oil companies. Phew.....

  • @ilikezappa I struggle to see the reasoning behind your comment but from what I can gather you're trying to insult me in a sarcastic manner. If I know floating ice melting will cause sea levels to rise I think I can comprehend that ice above land will do the same. As for the save the Earth shit, the climate changes without human intervention anyway. You just assume I use all the fossil fuels I can muster in a hope to kill the planet though, justifies your bullshit at least eh?

  • @SuckMyRightToe No I meant it ! I dont really care . I have enough money to insulate myself. Only shitty poor people will suffer.

  • @ilikezappa Couldn't be arsed to double post but saw the Chevy or something in your favourites and guessed you were just being honest. Either way you can rest safe in the knowledge the Earth will eventually rid itself of humans and your worthless life, however fiscally prepared you are. Ignorance is bliss though, rub yourself down with material possessions and see how long it keeps you alive, boast about your bullshit wealth to tramps who'd be more then happy to correct the suffering

  • @SuckMyRightToe agree with all of it ,although Hodges has shooed all the tramps away from the gates. Perhaps I will e mail them.

  • @ilikezappa Even in your imaginary world you can't boast to them, insult them from the safety of your dream mansion. The whole, 'I'm better then everyone' thing is a persona good comedians can carry off, you aren't one of these people. Stop trying so hard and get back to your dreary life or grow a pair and insult the homeless to their face if you're so self-assured that money can protect you.

  • @SuckMyRightToe Dreary ? You have read your posts ,right? We should be mates LOL

  • @MrBuch169169

I sure as hell don't. I mean granted i'm working with american papers here, but in my experiance you're better off making something up than believing what they tell you

  • @MrBuch169169 Sounds like you know nothing about satire or sarcasm either..... Love, its a comedy show...

  • @MrBuch169169

So Global warming is true but the ice caps melting won't increase the hight of water.

Water expands by a 3rd when it freezes and that third sits above the water when it floats. So space wise - no change.

However the whole earths temperature ecology and rain fall etc, totally change. So the world flooding from the ice melting nope.

Water changing it's location - quite possibly.

  • @TheSuttonator you're right, but north or south pole is a difference. The ice cap on the north pole is not on top of a landmass, which means that if it melts, the water level won't rise. If the south pole's ice cap melts, which is on a landmass, the sea level will rise.

  • @ikazooka I think the North Pole would cause the water levels to rise. At the moment, the water is condensed into a solid mass. If it were to melt and become liquid, it would be less dense and cover a larger surface area. Also, the ice that is above the water isn't currently displacing any water as it is out of the water. If it was to melt it would go into the water and therefore increase the volume of water causing the sea levels to rise.

Sorry I explained that so badly...

  • @kiundot if I am correct, when water freezes, it becomes 1.3 times larger in solid form. Ice floats in the water at the north pole, with 2/3 of the ice below the water and 1/3 above the water. The exact amount of space that ice covers extra than water thus is the part that is above the surface. If all this ice would melt, this means that there will be no change in the sea levels. :)

  • @kiundot The key thing is that if glaciers in the mountains melt, that will increase sea levels more than the North Pole melting. Hope that makes sense

  • @kiundot mate yer an idiot if u think that - the only possible way for sea leavels to rise is if ice that is on land melts and goes into the sea, its the archimedes principle about displacement of the water but a kilo of water unfrozen is still a kilo when frozen. Do the ice cube test in a glass and you'll see. Till then quit talkin shite

  • @MCMarkyTee Re-read what I wrote and maybe then you will think twice about posting stupid comments you illiterate fuck.

  • @TheSuttonator @ikazooka And don't forget all the landlocked ice in places like Greenland and Siberia, too.

  • @MrBuch169169 its got nothing to do with the guy reading the guardian...its the absurd frikkin nonsense that is written in it.

  • Reginald just subtly rips the crp out of people.

  • I love how James looks and sounds so serious there.
