@Lewdromantic The guitarist who plays it was the actual luthier that buit it, and he plays what looks like an 8-string classical guitar on the 'neon rainbow' performance at this same show (allthough sync'd w/ live vocal) he probably built that one too.
HEY, check the drummer at 1:12..........this clip sounds like maybe a little dubbing may have been laid down, some not even Alex's vocal possibly........MAN WE LOVE YA ALEX, rest in peace my friend......maybe we can jam on the night shift when I get there......two hearts are better than one anyway.....but we won't need those old hearts........just a little bit a soul baby.
that drummer is AWESOME =) check it out between 1.12 and 1.15- coolness! and while ur at it check out a talent show where he beat the hell out of those drums and generally kicked ass (and won of course). search google videos for 'danny smythe drum solo' and you'll see the true meaning of cool as ice =)
And I'm wondering what kind of guitar that is too! Don't remember seeing that before. Kind of an odd Flying V variation. And I agree, now that is was pointed out, that there's some nice drumming going on there.
Cool to hear Alex using the gruff voice he used on the original recording! Actually, I was having some doubts whether it was really him on the 45. He never uses that sound now.
Just picked up a Best of Boxtops. One or two tracks are a bit off, but there's a great one about falling in love sitting in a little church. It reminded me of catching a certain boo-ful girl's eye once. But she was outta my league... Sob!
steffan, although i dont disagree with your comments i dont see that family has anything to do with it....its just a lifestyle thing....the american way of life as opposed to the uk ?
Perfect pop song. Anyone got the chords? I use Am7/ D9 (at 5th fret, switching) then 'Hendrix Chord' on 'baby just wrote me' and Am7 for 'a letter'; then C / G/ F/ G (twice)using G augmented for the 'Anyway'. Same melody but jazzier.
Nerdy is part of the charm. Young people were more unsure of themselves then. The 60's cultural revolution changed this thank goodness! (I was there.)
Though the African Americans never looked nerdy. They has been entertaining the public for so much longer, I guess, so were more relaxed on stage. I doubt that anyone in the Boxtops had a family history of working in the entertainment business...
Hey it's good to see Pat from the black keys playing drums back then for the box tops!

is it true the singer was only 17 here?
r4scuache 2 years ago
Chilton was 16 in this live clip, lost that
"lower register " R&B voice around 19, sad. Life's vices, and nature apparently caught him quickly. Amazing vocals on his
Box Tops recordings, enjoy here Midnight
Angel, I met her in Church, Soul Deep...

wow, imagine the potential they had,he kind reminded me of jim morrisons voice for some reason, well the album version of the song
r4scuache 2 years ago
I don't think he lost the lower register. He probably just got tired of hurting his throat by forcing his voice to sound like that.

Probably the earliest live video with original
sound of the Boxtops on YouTube. Dismisses the
myth that Dan Penn did Alex Chilton's lead vocals. Check out "Boxtops on Mike Douglas" to
see & hear Alex perform "Soul Deep" & "Turn on
a Dream"(mid-69) w/hostess annoyance.

Shows that Chilton was a great singer, nevermind the guitar genius of Big Star.
