  • Been shooting ARs for along time and this new cartridge is awsome! I just ordered a 16" AAC barrel and YHM hand gaurd.... cant wait to get it going! Awsome video Hickok45.

  • Kinda wish they would have made the same round but without necking it down.

  • I thought ak's shot 7.62x51

  • @bboprob No no. That´s a NATO cartridge. Russians use 7.62x54R as their rifle ammo and 7.62x39 as their assault rifle ammo. They also have 7.62x25 for SMGs and pistols.

  • @sterlingsylvir The difference I think is that the 300 AAC comes in 2 different velocities, the 300BLK at 125 gr (~2300 ft/s) and the 300 subsonic at 220 gr ('whisper' at ~1,100 ft/s)

  • Great video, all pleasure no business! I watched it the whole way through. Excellent look at the 300 BLK, I'm really interested in what the ballistics are like.

  • For the price I would stick with the AK round.

  • So if I had an 5.56 AR-15, I could just replace it's barrel with a 300 AAC Blackout barrel and start shooting the round without further modifications?

  • @Delta094204 Ya thats what he said in the video..

  • great video hickok, can't wait to get my hands on one of the new Daniel Defense 300 Blackout AR's, its just kinda hard out here in the peoples republic of California...

  • Very cool. But I would have a second bolt carrier group to keep with that 300 black out upper. The bolts wear with the barrel and I wouldn't want to risk wearing that bolt down switching it from upper to upper and shooting it. Great Idea to get different uppers and I think that cartridge is awesome. But just food for thought. 2nd bolt carrier group :-)

  • Just bought a 300 Blackout yesterday. Haven't shot it yet because its considered a regulated firearm so I'll get it in about a week. Can't wait to shoot it!

  • How's that round compare to a 6.8 SPCII?

  • also sir as my second question would you suggest a 300 aac as a second upgrade to my ar ?

  • Thinking between a 308 or 300 aac sir what would you suggest ? Mainly going to be a range gun for me and my wife, ammo wise and accessories wise what would you suggest ?

  • Is that a hand guard on the hand rail?

  • I was wondering where you got your ammo and then i realized you shoot reloads from looking at that 5.56 casing

  • @flightsimdude123

Not necessarily. All the Federal M193 that I buy has the un-polished annealed casing. It LOOKS like fired brass, but it's not.

  • Hi ! When you talk about "grain", is it the actual weight of the bullet ? Or the powder ? Or the bullet plus the case ?

  • Hickok, have you done any videos on a rifle that fires the .300 Win Mag cartridge? Or could you possibly do a review of the round?

  • I'm very seriously considering one of these uppers. I've got a 556 ar, she's my safe queen still, but ever since I saw this vid I've been thinking about it. And those sure fire mags look nice too! To save some money I'll probly get the cmmg upper. Really shouldn't get the sf mag but it's too tempting. Whoops there goes another $1000, I've got a problem :(

  • @righyanb, I'm seeing mixed reviews on these Surefire magazines. I'm not sure myself. I bought two of them and am not sure I'm confident in their reliability. I've not tried them with 5.56 yet. It's had to beat a good old 30-rd mag.

  • @hickok45 Would love to see you get a .50 Beowulf Upper..

  • that is a very cool set up, and it looks like it would be a good cal. but right now the way the world is, I could not buy the 300 beacuse of the ammo availiability, if I can't get it off the shelf of some back woods country store, if I can't pick it up off the battlefield,I can't use it.I don't have deep pockets.imoney buy it in bulk, and not worry about it being my main, battle rifle. that would be a very nice thing to have,

  • Finally a useful AR.

  • @bamboo4tameshigiri stupidddd

  • @JUKEBOXX1990 AR sucks.

  • @bamboo4tameshigiri stupidddd

  • good info bad shot :)

  • @mateorep650 sights i think.

  • Seems like a very sporting and entertaining caliber to handle: are you really enjoying it! (first impressions say so!) Would you, and if so why, recommend this to "sport" shooters who admire these types of weapons!?!? Thanks!

  • Whats the difference between this and a 300 whisper?

  • Thats a cool range wish I lived there

  • It would be nice to see a distance comparison with the 5.56, 62 grain.... knockdown vs accuracy is always the most important thing, and change in barrel twist? What was the twist on the 300 barrel

  • I was wondering why the mag was so long lol.

  • Would love a comparison video between that and 556

  • 60? damn

  • Haha! "It's pretty cool.....not cheap, but pretty cool"

  • You're like my American Uncle i never had...

  • @BinaryOrchestra lol sounds like you're calling him a child rapist, because in America(and I'm sure other english speaking regions) a lot of pedos will call them self an uncle to gain trust with young gullible children and the word Uncle tends to create a false sense of comfort.

  • @cjhatesu

I think he refers to an American uncle as in, Hickok45 having all the goodies he might not have .. like me, here in the Netherlands we dont have the freedom to bear firearms. So i'd love to have an uncle like hickok45 :p

  • Thanks

  • Hi Hickok45, I like your work. That's a real nice looking gun. I have just a couple of questions and I'm no expert but it seems to me that a long magazine like I see there might be cumbersome when firing from a prone position. I like the 7.62 round but my understanding of the AK47 round is that it is a 7.62 short and tends to drop at about 400 meters. I'm not sure if this is correct. Perhaps you could do some 7.62 comparisons.

  • Do they make this for a left hand shooter

  • Thanks for an excellent review, I had my choice of another caliber down to the 6.5 Grendel, 300 AAC or .458 socom. I am pretty sure the 300 will be the choice!!

  • 16:26 Is that the sound of you two walking over hundreds of spent shell casings? :)

  • @Shinobi20000 Sounds like couple of shotgun shells too :P

  • @Shinobi20000

lol love that sound keeps me coming back to watch his videos its an added bonus at least :)

  • @pkasimov its on the right way, the larger cutouts are for the spanner wrench

  • @nickman203 Ah, true, makes sense... That must mean the castle nut on my friends DPMS is backwards? Wth lol

  • @pkasimov lol yep exactly what that means, you stake the end plate in to the smaller cutouts

  • nice range setup!!!

  • Can you form 300 BLK from a 556 or 223 case?

  • @ArmednSafe Yes, trim the .223 to length and neck down to .30 cal.

  • @Sup3rF1uid Neck down??

  • @jamesogle99 Oops, neck up xD

Its actually easier to form with .221 Fireball brass.

  • @Sup3rF1uid Have you done this? To neck it down do you ram it into a 300 BLK die and fire form?

  • Some people will expand it to say .270 before necking all the way up to .300 but honestly you can just lube up and ram it through. Fire forming is not required, a little case trimming may be.

I've toyed around with the idea of a 300 Whisper before but could never quite justify it, having said that for short range "energy on target" its great. Despite the fact that the standard .223 might have more energy, the frontal surface area of the .30 cals actually make it more deadly.

  • Bearing in mind, the "more deadly" bit is only applicable for very short range targets. For the most part I reckon kinetic energy on target is a larger factor than frontal surface area, especially when the .223 is shooting say, a 75gr AMAX at 2800ft/s. The AMAX tears apart violently, so you have a massive energy dump almost instantaneously. More energy, transferred faster. Thats the reason why I'm not sold on the Blackout or Whisper.

  • @Sup3rF1uid Yeah, I'm thinking this is another one of those specialty cartridges that has specific applications, but doesn't offer an overall improvement when you have to consider the cost. Do you know of any ballistics gel tests with the 75gr AMAX?

  • @ArmednSafe I don't do ballistic gel tests, I use them on game! I'm from Australia and shoot a fair few roos on my mate's property, 75 AMAXs will turn internals into soup. Happens every time, without fail.

Proof is in the pudding, as they say.

Trying to link a Sniper's Hide thread but I keep getting an error. Will send to your account.

  • so if i have two different uppers one in 6.8spc, and one in the 300 blackout they will both fire out of a standard 5.56 lower?

  • I wonder what the failure mode would be if you chambered and fired a 5.56 round in a .300 Blackout. Seems like you'd have to be really careful to not mix ammo. It looks like the .300 might chamber in a 5.56 barrel too...hmm...

  • What advantage does this round offer over 5.56 and how common is this round? It appears as though it's becoming popular but the ammo is uncommon.

  • @FiveTwoSevenTHR Much heavier projectile for better penatration through hard cover.

  • @Jakerem870tac Sounds like I'll stick to 5.56 for HD purposes then. Maybe in the future.

  • @FiveTwoSevenTHR

the chef advantage 300 has (as well as 6.8 spc) has is more energy over 5.56-

especially from shorter barrels ( 14 inch and below).

  • expensive hobby...

  • @hickok45 what barrel length is that? love your vids! keep it up!

  • oh an maybe a cleaning video over rifles especially newer models such as this! :) I've enjoyed your previous cleaning videos!

  • can you later give a short video comparing the black out rounds that are made by other manufactures to speak on the reliability of them? Thanks!

  • they also have ak mag wells for the ar15 also

  • did you ever check out the mgi hydra ar15 they have mag wells you can swapout from 9mm to 50 beowulf chec it out

  • @zakkwide I've heard that MGI has poor quality control and less than stellar customer service. Plus they are horribly expensive.

  • With that cartridge, wouldn't you be limiting yourself to 7.62x39 ranges vs. the longer ranges of the 5.56/.223? I always thought one of the big pluses of the .223 round was the range benefits over the 7.62x39.

What about accuracy? Does the AR platform provide better accuracy with the .300 blackout vs. the AK with the 7.62?

So many questions!!! Thanks for always keeping our brains in motion Hickock!

  • Good grief, 60 rounds of that Blackout ammunition in a single magazine, and it doesn't look enormously bulky. Hell, worth every penny that magazine.

  • im usually not into ars but THAT 1!!!!!

  • hickock i have a question, my father has fallen in love with those ear buds u use and it beats having to roll up the solo ones and stick em in everytime, so i have to ask what brand they are and where u get em

  • The barrel is all that needs to be changed, but (to my knowledge) you will need the DI gas block pinned correctly by a gunsmith.

  • @GoFightNguyen00 what you stated to @obZidianZ06 is incorrect. Barrel change only unlike 6.8 spc (that requires a seperate bolt.)

  • What are those plates made of? Steel? (I'm trying to get my hands on one of those.) Any suggestions?

  • What would happen if you tried to fire .223 out of a .300 Blackout barrel?

  • Can I put the barrel of this AAC into a HK416? Just curious about it.. I can't have AR's in my country so I can't know it...

  • @lukeboladao the 416 is just the upper on a standard AR-15 lower so it doesn't matter.

  • Im probably going to build an ar soon, and once this ammo gets cheap I will definitely consider getting a .300 blackout barrel...

  • Excellent use of the word "obviate

  • worth noting that 300 AAC Blackout can also safely chamber 300 Whisper

  • 16:10 flinch!

  • I'm getting the impression that a subsonic .300 AAC is trying to achieve the ballistics of a subsonic russian 9x39mm

  • hickock45=Solid Snake

  • what about 6.8 spc ?

  • hickok45, youre affiliated with midwayUSA?

  • is the 7.62 x39 the same as the .223 which is the same as the 5.56 NATO?

  • @smoothieking157 7.69x39 is the Russian AK47 round. Some like the cheap availability and harder punch of this round but prefer the ergonomics of the AR15, so they build an upper that can fire it. Unfortunately, the straight magwell of the AR15 does not play nice with the taper of the 7.69x39 case. The 300BLK gives similar ballistics in the same case of the 5.56, so no problems with the shape of the magwell.

  • @smoothieking157 Go to about 4:50 in the video, and he talks about this.

  • Hey, great channel. Love the "backyard". Quickly, I just wanted to confirm that instead of purchasing a whole upper that one can fire this round through a standard .223 AR (Bushmaster) with just a swap of the barrel. Is that correct? Same components?

  • Comment removed

  • Have you ever been hit by a ricochet? You seem pretty close to the metal plates up front!

  • Very cool..thanks for the info!

  • I like the slow moes they remind me of a video game I used to play called Fallout 3.

  • Get red dot

  • Just get an AR10.

  • It will always be 300 whisper in my eyes.

  • @dreaded002 A.K.A 300 Fireball A.K.A. .30/221 all the same. I looked at the same round last year but went with the 6.8 SPC.

  • @lpalmer80 I know, have had my 300 whisper for about a while now, aac just happened to take jd jones' cartridge changed it just enough to call their own then got it saami approved.

  • @lpalmer80 I know, i've been shooting 300 whisper for a bit over a year now. 300 blackout is jd jones' brainchild picked up by aac/remington changed just enough to call their own then saami approved. Then another pile of money and marketing thrown in the mix.

  • i use herters 7.62/39 in my ak47, what would you perfer?

thanks for all your vids, im a daily watcher, if i cant go shoot i watch you

  • Think there where made as a PDW that would could take on a AK-47; work great in short barrels too (like 8 in). Got to handle some H&K AR’s with 8in barrels with and with out silencers. Really easy to see it would be easy manipulate rushing out of a car for swat team Special Forces. Also you chose to go with the 220 or is it 225 grain round. Just shows you tactical is practical.

  • Is this round a subsonic or a supersonic round at full power? I've been curious about this for quite some time.

  • @bryanFskates69 125 grain: 2,215 ft/s

so yes I would say supersonic.

  • @DystruktoBoi1 Thank you very much, that's been bugging me for quite some time so it's nice to finally get an answer to that.

  • Comment removed

  • The Blackout has LOTS going for it. Brass is cheaper than 6.8, and with some time users can form their own brass, and load with a multitude of 30 cal bullets.

The Blackout excels with the 220 SMK in the subsonic load, but the supersonic light weight bullets have some bite too.

Barnes has a 110gr TTSX that expands down 1300fps,and a 16in barrel can push them to over 2400FPS, the 110V-max is another bullet that will mess up a predator. Surplus 145/147 and the M118 make for cheap pinking ammo.

  • The hundred round mag is called a beta mag

  • I think it is a neat round for folks that want one.

I still believe that just buying a real AR-10 and shooting real .308 rounds, just like God and Eugene Stoner intended is the best solution.

For obvious reasons, an AR-10 is always going to be more reliable than the child sized cut down version.

  • @TexasStraightShooter I agree that the AR-10 is more reliable, it was designed around the cartridge as opposed to many of these new AR-15 cartridges which are designed around the existing system.

That being said, the 7.62x51 might not be practical for most shooters. It is heavy, expensive, and most people don't have access to ranges that are large enough to realize the full capabilities of the round.

Intermediate cartridges like .300 BLK and 6.8 SPC certainly have their place.

  • @TexasStraightShooter Unless you are engaging targets past 600 yards, the 7.62x51 is (arguably) unnecessary. To each their own, but in my opinion, the merits of the .308 don't outweigh its shortcomings, especially next to these new intermediate cartridges. They are designed to be the best of both worlds (those worlds being 5.56x45 and 7.62x51) with minimal compromise.

  • @TexasStraightShooter

I love my AR-10's, they run, and pack a punch. Long range, the 300 BLK can't hang, but for a AR-15 sized weapon, the 300BLK offers more ft/lbs of energy, and in my location, I can shoot a deer with a 30 cal, but not with a 22 cal.

My 300 BLK is also VERY reliable and is lighter than my AR-10s.

    The Blackout loads CHEAP.

I don't pack my AR-10 in the woods much anymore, but I'll miss the thump the 165gr Nosler Ballistic tip delivered on my targets.

  • Hickock, this is one Awesome video. I have heard of the 300 Blackout but have not done much research on it until now...watching your video. Gee, that is one cool looking bullet. I am so glad you did this video. So, may be we will see more of this rifle??? I really like the 300 Blackout however, I guess I may wait to see if the ammo does come down before considering this rifle. Awesome video.

  • im considering getting a norinco m4 cq a in the next week or so *dodges bricks thrown at me for getting a Chinese ar* but they looks so complicated, im used to simple rifles and the ar seems intimidating, are ar's much to be concerned about? all the little detent pins and springs seem overwhelming, i know i wouldn't have to mess with any of that in normal cleaning, just the main 2 but still, sure is alot more complicated than my sks =/

  • @567WORMBOY123 The AR15 certainly has quite a few small, precisely machined parts, so it can seem intimidating at first glance. With some time, you'll realize it is actually quite simple and utilitarian.

Initially I found the bolt carrier group and trigger group the most confusing. Everything else is pretty straightforward. Take time to learn how each works and the AR15 will look simple in no time.

Are you in Canada? I suggest you consider alternatives to Norico.

  • @res0290 yup im canadian, i know norincos don't have the best reputations but most i talk to find nothing wrong with the norc cq a m4 but if i were in competitions for example id definitely spend the cash for a higher grade rifle, this is justify for fun because we cant hunt with ars here so i cant justify a 2k+ rifle for plinking. but is there anything else i should know about the norincos?

  • @567WORMBOY123 I do respect the Soviet designs indeed.

I've got to come clean and say I know absolutely nothing about firearm laws in Canada, much less importation laws. Here in the states there is a LOT of middleground between a Norico and a $2K+ AR15. A "good" AR15 can be had for $800, and a very good one for $1300.

  • @res0290 i think the next level up in ars here is the s&w m&p15, i think thats around 1200, most bushmasters i see run around 2k, im sure if i ordered a stripped lower and built a franken gun i could do it for 1k but that kinda comes back to how complex ars seem, im not sure id trust by abilities in assembling one from scratch, plus the waiting for the gun store to import most of the parts from the us, i see the norinco as more of an entry level ar, just to get the hang of the platform

  • @567WORMBOY123 I would advise against building your first AR from a stripped lower. Maybe buy a complete lower and complete upper separately, although again I do not know how easy that is in Canada.

The M&P is worth the extra coin, it is a good rifle. 2K for a Bushy is ridiculous. How much do Diemacos go for?

Maybe you're just shopping around at the wrong place? Finding a good dealer can be key if you're new to the AR world.

  • @res0290 getting uppers and lowers is no issue here but the cost may run high since everything has to be imported, the only Canadian built ars i know of are for our military. i dont think iv ever seen diemacos anywhere but the store i go to is a pretty decent one, shops are few and far in Canada and alot mostly deal in hunting guns, mine has a decent stock of military style firearms. ill probably go in tomorrow and ask about it, get some advice on whats out there on the Canadian market

  • @res0290 im also considering getting a glock 22, its about the same price as a norinco and with winter coming shooting outdoors for hours on end can be less than enjoyable so maybe ill just ride out the winter shooting handguns on the indoor range where its warm =p

  • Comment removed

  • @res0290 thanks, im sure ill spend hours reading over manuals to make sure i have a full understanding of it before i tinker with it, with my sks i just kinda flipped the latch on the side of the receiver cover up and figured it all out from there in about 10 minutes lol god bless the simplicity of soviet guns

  • I like the round,even better with a supressor.

  • will you be doing a case conversion video from .223rem to .300aac?

  • @MrThorsfar

Case conversion can be done many ways.

    1. Dillon RT1200 power trimmer and trim die

    2. chop saw the top off the 5.56, run in FL die, trim to length

    3. Get Redding dies with 2 expanders, up the 5.56 case to 30 cal, then trim with a 30 cal pilot to length.

    4. Send Brass off to get cut, BradsWarehouse(dot)com or others.

Some are using a drill press with a Milling bit to get the proper OAL then sizing in a FL die.

  • vote ron paul 2012!

  • @goodOLDbabyKISSES no lets go vote for someone the is stupider then bush rick parry

  • how much

  • I hope this cartridge sticks around. I love everything about it! I can't wait to earn my upper.

  • 7.62x25 just doesnt seem like it would have enough punch, large bullet with not much gun powder behind it

  • I love so much when he walks around and you can hear the bullet casings clattering around

  • I'm trying to get an AR in 6.8x43mm SPC. I love the AR line but instead i may get a Mossberg AR i forget what its called but it does look nice.

  • LOVE IT!!! thanks for this video just made a deer rifle out of your ar great idea very cool

  • I love this idea it turned it into a deer rifle without having to go with a larger ar style gun. LOVE IT!!!

  • Comment removed

  • I've always been kind of "meh" towards the AR and usually don't go for newfangled calibers... But now, suddenly, I desperately want an AR and a .300 Blackout upper!

  • I like the idea, but the fact is the blackout cartridge hits with no more than 60ftlbs over the 556 and the subsonic 300 blackout hits with the power of a .40sw but is dead silent which is a plus. So in my mind I ask the question....is it really worth it? And I can't see it working or even being adopted just because it has only a little more punch than the 556

  • 0:00

I love you belt buckle, did you make it yourself or did you buy it.

  • How do you like the Surefire quad-stack?

  • not as bad as the cost of .454 ammo

  • My mind was blown when I saw you flip down your front site and it became part of the rail.

    MIND BLOWN.

  • what length barrel is that? 16" with that flat top upper it looks amazong. the gun just blends so well.

  • America's version of the 9x39 caliber?

  • Hy guys , what do u thinck about Baykal rifles? I want to buy one for hunting, I understood they are Remington factorys, build in Russia. thx

  • I am also new to the AR's so this may be dumb, but you used your existing rifle and just switched out the complete upper, chambered in 300? Thats it? So now you basically switch back and forth, or is it passing a point of no return? Thanks to anyone with some info.

  • @DirtyRed703, Yeah, just switch the upper. You can even use the same bolt and carrier, although this upper came with one.

  • @hickok45 thats awesome, thanks!

  • @hickok45

That's what I love about the AR-15, you can make almost anything with it, hell, I've even seen crossbow uppers for them! Who would have thought?

There's 5.7x22mm uppers that feeds with FN P90 magazines, and ejects through the AR-15 magwell.

And not to talk about all the aftermarket parts, Magpul and what not.

  • You probably will wind up handloading for that one...something tells me that even if R-P starts making ammo for .300 Blackout, it won't be exactly "inexpensive." Less than current price, maybe, but not a great deal. Besides, 147-150gr mil pulls are everywhere and are bound to be more economical.

  • love the front sight

  • Cool vid Hickok, I appreciate the comparision between the 223 and 300 ammo great job as usual! I am new to the AR realm of firearms, and this was an interesting video that will give me something to think about for the future. Great videos, I always learn something new when I watch your videos. Thank you and keep it up!

  • Hi Hickok45,

On MidwayUSA you have ''Remington UMC 300 AAC BLACKOUT'' 4 $12.99!

    Check that out!

  • @AlfonsFromAtech, Yeah, I understand it was supposed to ship this week.

  • lol It's just fun to watch you shoot. You have so much fun it just rubs off. I have been sick & stuck in bed for a long time and I enjoy watching you & looking forward to getting back out shooting myself.

  • I am not really sure I see the point in this round other than something that hits harder when reduced to sub sonic speeds. I am kind of partial to small high velocity rounds but if this starts catching on I have to check it out.
