TG Sheppard had the hit but the BEST version is Bocephus. Compare them and it's no comparison. Hank has recorded it twice. This is his original version. he re-recorded it for the album "I'm One Of You" a few years ago. The new one is good too, but I like this old one more for some reason. He sings it like he really was dying back then. I've never had a drinking problem but I have had pill addiction issues so I can relate...cause there is a devil in that bottle too!

Yes, T.G. Sheppard did this song originally in the 1970's. I remember listening to it as a child. It is such a great song. I did not know Hank Jr. recorded it until now. Hope you get to go to Texas someday :)

this song is a great Jr. tune. as far as Hank III is concerned, his last country album as far as im concerned was straight to hell. nashville needs to leave pop out of country and the same goes for III and metal. my only hope is now that III is free from curb records, he will make a real country album. until then, ill stick with Lucky Tubb and J.
