Wow my mom has been looking for this for years. Her mom used to sing it to her and she sang it to me and we've passed it on to my nieces. We sing it in a completely different tune and our words are slightly different.
I love this song too! My granny would sing this to me as a little girl with slightly different lyrics- still makes me cry every time! Dolly Parton (who is also amazing) did not actually write this song; it's an old folk ballad. This song has been passed down in my family through many generations of
musicians. Thanks for posting and sharing this beautiful song!
Oh my goodness!!!! I love this song & av searched 4 it on you tube previously so many times!!!! I remember 1st hearing it when i was about 12yrs old & ad 2 play it again as i thought i'd misheard the lyrics!!!!! Dolly has wrote sum real tear jerkers! Thanku 4 posting this song!!!!
My Grandma Blasingame used to sing this song for me everytime I saw her when I was little and up until she died; it always made me sit there and bawl the whole time she sang it, but I always begged her to sing it over and over until she would feel bad for me crying. I still cry, apparently, but only because I miss her... I wish my kids and I would have had more time with her. She died when they were 5 and 2, she was 87.She was the most loving, giving, caring, beautiful person I have ever known
Think yourself lucky, My grandparents have been gone for 19 and 12 years respectivly, I was 10 and the week of my 17th birthday and then no more grandparents, think yourself very lucky that your kids met her, my memories of mine are fading never mind my kids seeing them...
I'm absolutely flawed and almost lost for words. I had no idea that Dolly was so good at such an early age. What year was this recorded, please ?
Thank You for posting !
On the back notes of the " Just because I'm a Woman" album Porter Wagoner refers to a song that Dolly "wrote" when she was five, her mother wrote it down, and later Dolly sang it to Porter. Do You know what the song was ?
-Ar she sings it so good! She's 13; she sounds AMAZING! Her voice is really really good. I love Dolly Parton xx.

OMG...this is one of the saddest songs ever. Right up there with Dolly's orphan songs. I never thought I would be able to find it. THank you!

That is a SAD song. That's worse than "Me and Little Andy."

my grandfather always used to sing songs like this to me too. No wonder I became a depressed grunge fan in my teen years.
