Piano is, as an instrument, very easy to learn, even easy to master. But it is THE tool for composition, and that is the part that is almost indefinately complex. No other instrument is so inviting to explore music.
@herrbasan easy to learn? for whom? <.< if you mean relative to other instruments....well I can't even give you that, since personally I found learning trumpet easier.
tecnically the guitar is physical and alien at start, the piano is soft and digital, but(!!)
the guitar is player (if u finger pick) in a 4 fingers suppporting 4 fingers digitation (the other 2- thumb in the neck hand and tiny finger in body hand, theoreticaly dont play);
in the piano u got 10 fingers that have the ability to play independently ( depending of ur virtuosism) while in the guitar u can only play 6 notes at a time, in intricate composing, that is the piano's technical challende :P
You should make a video talking about how you got into playing, how you learned ect. If you've already made a video or already explained it then could somebody point me into the right direction.
I hate you! I can never get my hands to work indepentally......I've been playing keyboard for over 40 years and my brain just will not split my hands and I can't spell indepentally correctly - or have I? Sigh.
ah im jealous. i always feel like i should have started piano instead of classical guitar. i think its better for understanding theory and composition/ improvisation.
any way i liked it, it was coherent in terms of having some central motives etc.
@bobbyatopk the classical actually allows a method of understanding of tonal construction that in the piano take much more maths and theoretical support as opposed to starting only by visuals- guitar. in my view- guitar- more intuitive and faster start at understanding theory , piano-wider harmonic spectrum, (10 fingers against 6 strings, if not using elbows :P)allowing then a wider compositional structure, the guitar balances this loss , by winning in expression :P, still got to love them both!
@Ricosophy You are forgetting that a cat can jump on a keyboard and hit a perfect note. You just "push the button" hard for a loud sound and soft for a soft one. If this seems way more difficult than guitar then i don't know what to say. I use all 10 fingers on guitar. I was playing my first song badly on guitar in 20 mins, I was playing my first song convincingly on piano in 2. The most difficult to master in my opinion are woodwind instruments.
@myjizzureye Maybe...but let's face it. How many times did you bend a string to the needed pitch when you missed it the first time (they get really pissed when you try that with a piano, by the way)? At least with the Sax, when we fuck up we call it "Jazz" and are praised for our guts and style (or you play so fast that no one can catch it...like Bird did).
@myjizzureye Agreed. When I began playing guitar I was very discouraged because my strings buzzed and the chords sounded awkward, when I began playing violin the intonation was awful and I generally felt sort of hopeless, but when I first started playing piano, the things I played, though simple, sounded fine, aside from the usual beginner screw ups.
@myjizzureye but that was not what u mentioned first, u are now talking of technique, when firstly u talked, and thats what i talked about too, of how much each of the 2 instruments is a good "teacher" of music theory",this is a totally diferent discussion, surely not the one i talked about, and technically, they are uncomparable worlds myj,, ill write down in a 2nd comment what i think, but this is definitely not what i talked about.
@Ricosophy Basically what I am trying to get at is spastics can play piano awesomely. Autistic kids hammer out tunes just like their writers but I dont see them doing the same with stringed instruments. I have seen many pianists who know every scale in the book yet cant just play along with a band to a song they haven't heard. I know countless guitarists who really dont even know that they "know" a scale but have no trouble playing anything they hear. Its subjective, just saying piano is easy.
@bonnie43uk im pretty sure they were. he did a chromatic ascending bass at one point and repeated some of the same chromatic patterns. unless its like the old jazz joke; i if you play the wrong note, play it again!
Wow. There is definitely something in your head that wants to come out. I was transfixed, waiting for it to form. Keep going guy. You've got something to say, or some questions you need answered, or something.
i listened to this, then got to inspired to listen to that session you played on where you played my chart "mass extinction event" at berklee. groovy.
@o0NotDarkYet0o teaching can be hard after a while of playing.. sometimes you just know.. oddly.. sheet music can be taught but style and such cannot be. :)
I've been playing piano for a few years, but I don't know any music theory. Any tips on where I could begin?
