hey matt, hows the married life? I'm going to be applying soon for the Programme so with a little luck i will be living in Oita (or Chiba, my #1 choice) this time next year.
also i'll PM you about my trip to Oita in Dec. so that perhaps i can meet up with you!
Love Spoon! Check out the nanbanjin website for details about the band. I know they have a lot of free downloads, but the CD with Love Spoon on it will be released soon. The link for their website is in the "more information" above.

Crzeimasha: I am positive she could, yes. One problem that many non-Japanese find when they arrive here is that the dress/clothes sizes are rather small... so that may interfere. Although, with Kimono, I am not sure that size would matter all that much.
(continued from below) I'm gonna be coming down to oita/beppu with my girlfriend for 3 days or so in december to visit my old homestay brother at APU and his family in oita. I'm glad to read that you are teaching there (apu) now, thats very cool. Maybe while im down there we can meet up for a little while?
congrats man, can't wait see a posatrocible jr. announcement lol. Hope you guys have an enjoyable wedding and life together. I can't imagine the huevos it took to ask for her hand in marriage, must have been an experience huh lol.
well have fun at the wedding and enjoy the honeymoon (where are you guys going?).
Great video Matt! There were so many great moments in this video. Here is a list of my top 3: the green screen overlay Matt, the Benny Hill inspired sped up version of the Hakama/Kimono dressing, and last but not least your Ron Burgundy delivery towards the end. Well done and congratulations!
Mr. Blake: Thanks kindly! I'm Ron Burgundy? (Whatever is typed on the tele-prompter, Burgundy will read!) Really looking forward to the mayhem we can create next semester...
omg Matt you two look amazing in both the traditional and western omg. im so happy for you i always knew you two would get married. BOUT TIME! the next announcement will be BABY!!! yeah i know jumping the gun but you know its true! again im happy for you two and you guys look amazing, and you look a little nervous, breathe!
lilangel8932: Thanks so much! It is about time, isn't it... I am really looking forward to the 30th, but you are right... there are some "nerves". I will take your advice! =)
Wow! First of all, rated 5/5. Second of all, a HUGE congratulations to the both of you. Wishing the very best for the two of you!
I had no idea they did both the traditional and Western photos. That's a great idea and it gives me an idea for my future as well! I think the best part was the asking of her parents. Very informative, yet I commend you on your courage.
I did have 1 question however, are you having a traditional or Western wedding? Once again, best of luck to you guys!
fujitafunk: Thanks so much! It should be a fun wedding.
To answer your question, I will end up being a kind of fusion; that is to say, there will be elements of traditional Japanese and western style. For the ceremony itself, it'll be a shrine nearby. Very Shinto style ceremony. But, as for the reception, there are mostly western elements (like cake cutting, white wedding dress, etc.) I hope to have some footage up here eventually. =)
why were they upset? and don't be offended but how old is she? She looks like she is in her teens but i am told age is difficult to see in Japanese men and women as say, to US and European men and women.
chibomato78: Good questions! First off, her parents live in the country-side and have a pretty conservative outlook. Their initial main worry was that I was gonna take their daughter away from Oita/Japan.
akamai04: We wish you were here too! Not only to have fun at the wedding, but also hopefully to help us pay for the wedding through Texas Holdem winnings... although it will be tough to beat you!
Congrats on your wedding but I have a question. You have probably been asked this one-hundred times but what do as a job in Japan. I just started watching your video's so I don't know much about you?
Im on an exchange right now and I absolutly love Japan. I always thought of being a teacher here when I was older I just wanted to see what it was like here first. Going home in a day so that sucks but oh well. Im definately coming back!
Yeah. August is full of festivals! Im staying in Nagano right now! I bet it's not as hot as in the major cities but it can get pretty hot here. Im not complaining though :D
WOOOOOOOOOWW!! That's great !!! I hope you have an awesome wedding and I hope you'll love each other till the end of your days !! Congratulations Matt and Misato !!!
truescool: Thanks so much! You have always been a kind supporter of my life here... you have been a big help to get me where I am in Japan! All the best to you as well!
Congratulations and hope you have a great future together! Hope to see an update after the wedding. Also I have one question, is the hakama the men wear only worn in weddings or are there people who wear it casually. Is that the only style or is there a more business type or casual one. I would love to wear that when I go to japan this year!
worldgenius: Thanks! About the hakama: it is pretty well used only in super formal situations, like weddings or religious events... sometimes festivals (although "male" yukata is more usual).

ah yes, the clothes are definitely smaller haha. I get small and mediums in America but I had to get mostly large in Japan.
Ok thanks!

Question: Who pays for weddings in Japan, you or the parents?
AndrewDominoes 2 years ago
AndrewDominoes: The families give money, we pay too, and instead of "wedding gifts", the wedding guests bring money.
Your right though... I could probably have 5 really great weddings back home for the price of one Japanese wedding.

Vreugdian: I would recommend the JET programme, first and foremost. It is a great way to be introduced to Japan while earning OK cash.
If you are serious about living here long-term, there are many options including marriage, higher education, or seeking citizenship.

I've already planned a vacation to Japan to "take her back to see her folks" in November, with real intentions to propose if all goes well with her parents.
Do you have any sugestions that may help me out and maybe give me a bit more confidence to aproach her father and very respectfully ask for his daughters hand?
AnfoAU 2 years ago
Congratulations to you, too! If you want a "script" for how to propose marriage, lemme know. Misato and I can write something up.
My only other piece of advice would be to ask your girlfriend to help you: she probably knows the best way to approach her parents... maybe.
