  • Absolute definitive version.

Fapy transition line is a twisting blade in anyone<s heart.

And, of course, Tchavolo<s beautiful passion and expressiveness.

    Thanks to them.

  • Just transcribed a bunch of licks from Tchavolo's solo. They are up on my channel if you want to learn them.

  • Just beautiful !!!

  • ????

Why Tchavolo is playing such horrible pompe

  • @bajerovaquero Haaaaaaa I ask myself the same everytime I see this one... and Fapy's pompe is so perfect and light.

  • @bajerovaquero vai a casa!

  • Guitar masters in action! I love Tchavolos style!

  • Magnifico Duo

  • An epic version of Seul ce soir. Masters chemistry!

  • the fret buzz originated from django keeping his stolen spoon collection in his guitar he would nip off and pop in to a cafe '' no mcdonalds in them days'' and steal anything he could get his fingers on. spoons where easy to pick up as his left hand couldnt manage a a saucer or tupper wear containers . so there you have it

  • Mon Dieu! My God! Where do I find a goat and an altar?

  • Tchavolo Schmitt is allien

  • @christi618 lol

  • 3:40 i want his tshirt,

also, what hero's these two are. not to mention what they've done to bring Gypsy jazz back, without them i might not have even been exposed to it in the first place. I tip my hat

  • This song is called "Seul Ce Soir"

    Chords:

    C % B7 % C % Bb A7

    Dm G7 C# C B7 % Em/Ebm Dm/G7 (last 4 chords half bar each)

    C % B7 % C % Bb A7

    F Fm C A7 Dm G7 C G7

Give this comment a thumbs up to keep it at the top!

(or maybe uploader guzziuk will put it in the description? ;-) )

  • so sick

  • Arza esos gitanos buenos! Of course they don't have a clean way of playing. But listen to "what" they are playing.

  • great,just great.

  • Mi emozionano...

  • quelle lnvention ! merveilleux!

  • Fantastici

  • Anybody know what kind of microphone is in his guitar?

  • those are transducers

  • I'm referring to the mic that's clipped to his soundhole...

  • @ricaard Looks like it could be a Crown GLM to me.

  • @FiddlerSteve Got a better look at it later in the video, definitely a Crown GLM100 or 200.

  • @FiddlerSteve thanks! I'm trying to get a safe but reliable recreation of my acoustic onstage, but don't wanna go direct in.

  • @FiddlerSteve I acquired a GLM, and I like it! Thanks!

  • these are two masters doing just what they do best. Absolutely incredible!! Even better in person. Bless you Tchav Bless you Fapy; May I see you again at Samois another year.

  • Fapy is so close to Django in spirit, phrasing and feel, sublime...

  • ahhh this is so incredibly wonderful. Thank you.

What is the name of this tune?

  • je suis seul ce soir

  • I Love It !!!!!!

  • L'esprit manouche indeed. Masters at work. Merci.

Feel free to check out my jazz blog praised highly by Marc Meyers from JazzWax a few days ago. For url see my profile.

    See you,

    Brew "Browser" Lite

  • I'm AMAZED !!

  • Wonderful playing, what a great combined sound.

  • Mother fuck

  • I play these changes all the time. They are the chord changes to a tune called "Dream"

Even if the french tune has a different melody but i cannot hear the head so it sounds like they are blowing on Dream

  • Is that part of the Django sound to have that much fret buzz?

  • Yes LOL

  • No - but it is part of the sound to be that good a player - these are the gods from that genre and they are partying - not talking out of their bottoms.

  • @guzziuk After reading your comment i bet you're american. Go listen to some rap.

  • @ArkRed1 the setup for the guitars is actually very high action and stiff. the fret buzz comes from the playing style itself. were talking 3.5mm picks minimum and a VERY heavy handed attack. also, they play rest stops in the picking which doesnt help any. just the way gypsy jazz is.

  • @Oreoshakespear What string gauge is normal for this style?

  • @RobZiak my strings are 11, 14, 21, 27, 35, and 46 - that's a set of pyramid silk & steel, silver plated, set no.305 if you're looking for some :-)

  • @Oreoshakespear actually my gypsy jazz guitar has a really nice low action, but i agree with everything else you say!

  • @ArkRed1 yaaaa mannn

  • @ArkRed1 You arsehole.

  • @ArkRed1 Dickhead.

  • du vrais du pur jazz manouches

  • thanks for posting, that's an incredible nice video!

  • Yeah yeah !! -_-

  • Fapy plays wonderfully, right from the soul.

  • Man, this is sweeeeeet!! OK, so why is it that Amazon has Metal as Tchavolo's only related musical genre? Weird

  • tchavolo!

  • it sounds like "time on my hands" that django recored, although thats in the key of e and this is in c. is it the same song?

  • Sorry... My mistake. The song is 'Je suis seul ce soir'. Also an old French song like J'attendrai. Both songs are many times covered by Gypsy-style musicians.

  • what song is this that they are playing?

  • The song is called 'J'attendrai'. An old French song, also sung by Edith Piaf (and many others)

  • I agree totally..he is one of my favorite too,,amazing player...

  • I've got a smile for the rest of the day. I love these to guys. It's more than just music; it's a transfer of spirit.

  • das nenne ich ein ,, Gitarrespiel grandios ,,

    Lortzg

  • golden drops for all of us!

  • incredible..... :-0

  • formidable tchavo et fapy magic encor

    vraiment la grâce !!

  • sorry i just don't think 1 comment does this video enough justice. As other people have said i'm sure, "what i would give... to see this live." I can listen to this for 5 hours and still enjoy every note. By the way can someone tell me where this festival is? and also if there are plans of it coming back in the near future? (I know funds were an issue recently).

  • The festival started in 2003, (50th anniversary of Djangos death), and was held in Moseley Park in Birmingham UK. We managed to make three years happen before we ran out of money.

  • Have you set up a webpage for donations? I would be glad to help- I am fairly capable at such things. Please let me know, I'm sure other people here would be willing to donate.

  • this is such great guitar playing. these guys know the music so well they dont need to play super fast, just great

  • Agreed. I'd rather hear some beautiful improvised lines than just fast playing to show technique. In my opinion, Fapy and Jimmy (Rosenberg) are the most beautiful gypsy guitar players. This particular video is sensational, I can watch it over and over.

  • fapy has gold in his hands and tchavolo is

such a wonderful spontaneous musician they make such a team! They are really moved with emotion at the end!

  • gipsy's blues and what a groove!

These manouche are fantastic and so generous!

Thanks so very much for every single note.

  • 5-star all the way!

  • this is what the guitar was made for

  • Fantastico

  • Totally fantastic! Do I detect cross-over (intentional or not) between Brazilian chorinho and jazz guitare manouche? I sincerely thank guzziuk for sharing this exceptional moment with us all.

  • DAMN! What would I give to watch this live...

  • I said that just a minute a go to my my girlfriend hahaha. This is incredible.

  • I can't get enough of this.... Two brilliant guitarists, completely different in guitarstyle but so dedicated. This is love! Love for music. Love for Django. Django, not only a unique guitarplayer but also a great composer.

By the way.... I saw that bassplayer several times and ... wow That guy is great. Really GREAT. I know, I'm a bassplayer too.

See you all in Samois sur Seine next year. You gotta be there!

  • such virtuosity

  • This is a dream version of "Dream"........ love it ! Thankyou !!!

Fabuleux duo !

  • This is great ! Again..I saw Tchavolo Schmidt last week again in Samois, with is son and the whole Schmidt family., including Dorado Schmidt... Unique !!!!

  • This is absolutely wonderful! I can't get enough!!

  • This song tittle is "Seul(e) ce soir" Paroles: Paul Durand. Musique: Rose Noël, Jean Casanova . First time in 1941 By Léo Marjane. All the French war generation knows it. Tesechanges are widely used that 's why it sounds so familiar. Tchavolo and Fapy have superb ideas on it. As quite often "its in the old pot that one make the best Jazz".

  • I think you will find it is 'Smile' by Chaplin.

  • I'm pretty sure it's "Dream"....it certainly has the same chord progression.

  • I live Tchavolo, he has such attack it makes me want to cry! Check out Moreno -theres a great vid of him on the manouche-guitars website-and he has the same guitar as me! one love

  • We had Moreno playing at our festival in 2005 - he is another great player!

  • Tchavolo Schmitt is absolutely my favorite player. It's funny that a previous comment mentions Fapy as playing from the soul and not as fast as some other guys. Exactly what I'd say about Tchavolo. He CAN play fast of course, but always with heart and always with the strongest sense of swing.

  • Fapy plays wonderfully, right from the soul. Sure, other guys are faster, Bireli, Debarre, etc. But they hold nothing over him on the creativity and feeling level. Just a stupendous performance.

  • terrible!!! super, j adore les 2

  • WHAYS THIS BEUTY CALLED-ANY ONE

  • First 16 bars have the same changes as "Whispering," but differs after that.

  • je suis seul(e) ce soir? Is that wht its called?

  • thanks, i had never heard of these people before

  • Nice to see Tchavolo pressure ond Fapy and Fapy out of crontrol over the orchestra - fascinating !!

  • A hauntingly smooth presentation.

  • these 2 guys are the best gypsy players. its so great to see them playing together

  • ME GUSTA!!

  • I love the way Fapy plays rythym, such a light and sensitive touch. He's not stricking the strings,he's conjuring magic from them. What a treat!

  • Absolument excellent, un plaisir pour mes oreilles !

  • Absolutely awesome. I prefer him to Bireli, Bireli just too much technique, too busy for my taste. It's sort of the reason I prefer Teddy Wilson to Art Tatum. Anyway, this is the best video I've found so far. Breathtaking.

  • They had only met for the first time back at the hotel the previous night - no rehearsals just going for it!

  • @karch139

    I know...

Bireli can be very exhausting to listen to.

Good analogy visavis Wilson and Tatum. Fapy plays with

    such warmth and 'flavor'.

But Debarre (at least for me, i'm still new to Manouche) still swings the hardest.

Kind of the Johnny Griffin of this style. LoL.

  • the mighty, the one and only, tchavolo schmitt

  • this is great....jazz manouche forever...

  • These guys are great and this is what it's all about; Joscho Stephan is an amazing master of this style, but he still lacks that certain emotional quality that these two are able to exude.

Merci.

  • These guys are 2 modern day legends!

  • what tune is this

  • The tune is called: Je suis seul ce soir'

A popular Frech song also known by the Edith Piaf version

  • It sounds a bit like 'Someday you'll be sorry' written by Louis A.

  • Well okay. Fair enough, but I assure you, one can play 'Smile' perfectly over the changes, note for note beat for beat.

  • it just doesnt get any better than this

  • big hearts

  • Great videos! And sound directly from the board!! ;-)

How did you do? Are you one of the oganisers?

I posted a 1H long video from the same gig (converted from VHS) on video google a while ago. Did it come from you also?

  • Its beautiful - had to be shared - hopefully there should be some more as I get around to editing all of the footage I have from the last three years L'Esprit Manouche festivals

  • Where's the venue?

  • The festival was held at Moseley in Birmingham type L'Esprit Manouche into Google and it will bring up the website with all of the details, photos etc

  • I see that this Festival has run out of funds and as of 2006 they stopped having it. What a shame!

  • Keep your fingers crossed for next year!

  • This video is a musical treasure. Thank you so much for uploading it and sharing it with the world.

  • What a revelation! It's so good to see and hear such fantastic vintage guitar playing. Encore!!

  • superb! what a treat! please get this released commercially!

  • big fan of these gentlemen. fapys my personal fave. thanks for uploading!
