  • my girlfriends melons are worth atleast 100 bucks a pop lol

  • @Zakiuz101 Lot's of Ramen dishes have pork stock but there are plenty of chicken and seafood ones, there's also all the other seafood and vegetable dishes that they like to eat.

I'd recommend memorising the Japanese words for all relevent ingredients and make sure you ask for the food info sheets, the restaurants should have some.

  • ROFLMAO dude you give an excellent idea on how else to use the KONJAC

  • Oh yeah. Good video. *nods*

  • I saw something on those fruits with the crazy prices before. They are suppose to be the most perfect I believe. They even have some sort of light that somehow measures how much sugar is in the fruit... yeah I'd rather buy 100 melons like Cooney said. Probably feed a village of starving people or something. *shrugs*

  • lol so im guessing thats the Costco of Ikebukuro huh

  • This is defiantly my favorite tokyocooney :D

  • im going to live in ikebukuro starting this july. fun!

  • okay... i've heard fruit was expensive in japan but i wouldn't have believed $80 for a melon if you hadn't shown it! seriously... did the emperor himself grow it?! and $2.50 for ONE cherry? people actually pay that??

  • how disturbing, boys are so gross!

  • actually the best substitute for "mirin" is apple or apple juice. personally, apple, grated is great.the mirin gives a sweet taste. but apple juice does the same.

  • I love this vlog it makes me want to move to tokyo and its funny as dude awesome sub

  • you should really do more cooking videos.

  • I dunno man, a pair of good melons are worth a lot.

  • Comment removed

  • Is there a good store brand soy sauce in America? All I can find is Kikomen and it tastes like ass.

  • @chronicleone kikkoman is the best selling soy sauce here. and all other soy sauce here taste like that. thin and salty. if u want sweet and thick soy sauce, try looking in a chinese grocery store or indonesian/malaysian store. or places that sell asian food stuff.

  • That melon cures cancer, aids, and brings about world peace.

  • i think its because its hard to grow melons in jap

  • i eat at micky dees for 5,75 man are u for real

  • i bet after 5 days at sea, holdin on to the last piece of wood from the boat, a melon is worth a 100 =))

  • My boyfriend and I cook with Mirin all the time. Of course, we get it at the grocery stores in Quartier-Chinois, but yeah....

Tip: If you can't find a particular asian ingredient, google for asian grocers in your area. You might be surprised to find one.

  • 5:51-6:06 ROFLMAO! SERIOUSLY DUDE! lol

also, you used the WHOLE onion?!...that must be one strong tasten dish! that was a big onion, but looks good!

  • 80 dollars for... a .. melon

    wow

  • wow, u funny XD

    xx mai

  • Dude, sorry but it seemed to me that on the first minute of your vid(when you are near Kenji) that you did cocaine or something like few minutes ago. You were talking really faster than usual xDD

Anyway, great video, as usual ;)

  • If I paid $100 for a melon, when I cut that bastard open there'd better be a phucking talking frog announcing the secrets of the universe. Mental.

  • @SteveWrona

For that much better sing and dance xD

  • Oh God, i love you.

    You are so funny)

  • Why is food so expensive in Japan?

  • did you use a cookbook to learn japanese cooking ?

  • ooishi desu ne

  • that looks really good, i might make some.

  • I couldn't help but notice your knife that you were using around 7:25 ish. Is it by chance Cutco? My first job was selling cutco and i still have my set. If it's not, nice knife either way! haha...knives... :/

  • Indeed it was... fellow cutco rep.

  • I love the melon part lol

  • You should do more cooking videos.

  • haha, this has been more entertaining than informative :D well, beside the fact that i learned, what boys are doing with the konjaku instead of eating eat.

ah, and man, you´re speaking really really fast!

  • Ha that was better than tv!

  • I almost always assume you are filming yourself, but in the beginning in this movie, the camera is moving, and your put your hair behind your ears with both hands. Who is the mystery guy behind the camera? :o (i'd be surprised if you used your feet)

Thanks for all the videos, going to enjoy watching the rest! :)

  • lmao.

  • here in mexico you pay around 10 cents for a melon lol

  • i love ur appartment.

    :D

    so small but conventional

  • It would be funny if the tattoo said, "free meat." Just think of all of the interesting interpretations people would have!

  • Do you really have "meat" tattoed on your arm??

  • It's a fake tatto

  • I actually made this yesterday. However, I used tamari instead of soy sauce (for those of you who don't know, tamari is basically just gluten free soy sauce). I also used shiitake mushrooms.

My friend gave me a giant bottle of mirin over a year ago and I never knew what to do with it until now :D

    thanks Kevin! ^_^

  • I love you Kevin Cooney.

  • 5:51 Huh?? i don't get it....

  • if you are a guy and dont know....jesus

  • fruits are usually expensive in japan because its not like north america where they have cali to have so much crops and usually those expensive fruits are for gifts because they are known as better quality... so people would send expensive fruits to like their boss or something. its like a cultural thing. but i agree its pretty pricy..

  • Just Wondering Kev, would it be possible for you to show some of the places that you'd recommend, for eating in Japan, and the best actual "sushi" restaurants you've been to.

  • The square watermelons cost more. :)

  • "Ahhh! I forgot the Konnyaku! Ah well, I can use it later for somethinfg else... 0.0"

  • i love fried onions

  • hahah 5:51

  • actually the expensive money is used as a gift for the parents from the husband-to-be. The more expensive the melon the better u r seen in the eyes of the parents

  • You should put a few elastic bands around the peeler, it will make it more comfortable to hold. Great vids, I'm watching them all!

  • "It's all right, Kenji. You're safe...for now." hahaha

  • Oh man! You ruined konnyaku for me now!! Haha

  • OMG is that Kenji?? he's still alive?!? How old is he now? 1.5/2 years??

Yes alot of fruits are extremely expensive in Japan. I've seen a picture of a square watermelon with a price (I can't really remember it clearly, but the price was around 120,000 yen)... I mean that's insane.

  • The Roots of Violence:

    Wealth without work,

    PS. are you on acid?!!

  • I love the mario bros. t-shirt... i want one too.

  • In my country (Mexico) a melon costs around 1.4 dollars. I might wanna send you a box of melons, so you can sell them half the price in japan.

  • lol dont put konnyaku on Kenji!!!

    NOOOOOOOO!! :'(

  • wow fruit there is expensive.....$80 for 1 melon....now......that will be about £30-£40 in english pounds.......my god....i could get 30 melons for that!

  • doode you should a do a vid on The Japanese Square water melons that i see in some animes!

  • why are the fruit prices sooooo high?? Melons were on sale yesterday in my supermarket they were 99 cents lolol

  • It all depends on where you shop in Tokyo -generally fruit is more expensive in Tokyo than in rural parts of Japan. But there are places to get cheap fruit in Tokyo as well, its just not going to look as good.

If you go to a supermarket in the USA you have to rifle through a bunch of fruit to find a good one, thats normal... in high end stores in Tokyo there shouldn't be that problem, it should all look good -but you'll pay for it.

You can also buy fruit at some 100 yen stores -cheap!

  • The second song was pretty hilarious.

"It's not the meat, it's the motion"

  • i don't understand the other use for "konnyaku?". I have really vague idea that may or may not be what he was implying. But even then i am still confused. i apologize to the japanese language if i have screwed it up.

  • Have you seen the movie American Pie where Jim finds the apple pie on the table?

  • thas why japanese melon is so sweet.plz try it.for example beef as kobe beef.

  • lol i imagine him pooring kenji into a frying pan

  • what's the song used here? I have heard you use it a lot

  • "Do you know some French people pay $1,000 to grape sake ? They are insane!" That was what my grand pa said to my dad after returning from his first trip to Europe 40 years ago.

Believe me. $100 melon tastes like heaven.

  • i have a question (i have already asked but im desperate to know...) do japanese use peanut products as the chinese use it (alot) because im allergic to it and i wanna go visit the temples and not the hospital or the foreign graveyards like you showed in one of your vlogs... thanks...^^

  • For gaijin, you know a lot of trivial only the locals would know.

I guess Japanese Konjaku is equivalent of American Pie.

  • If i ever visit Japan, I'm going to buy like 10 melons in the U.S. and sell them for like $39 each, i will me rich... fruits are cheap as fuck here...

  • don't worry kenji, you're safe...for now, lmfao

  • uhm i can tell that italians cook sauce in the same way... carbonara is carbonara from north to south... same goes for pesto, amatriciana, arrabbiata, ragù etc etc...

    xxx

  • thats not necessarily true...

i know that from reigion to reigion the tastes of the sauces change...

  • Konyaku lol

Great vid dude. Keep it up man :)

  • Konyaku is called devil's tongue in the states.. just fyi

  • y is rated two thumbs down?

  • Good question, I wonder that too. It's not even a false fact.. if you type devil's tongue on google you will get konyaku

  • We use an apple pie for that here in the states.

  • Dude, those melons are insane. My father-in-law bought me one to try the first time I went to Tokyo. Good?-Yes! worth $100?- Heck no! We shop in Tokyo at Koiwa Station Center and Olympic grocery store. The actually have reasonable melons and fruit that are very good. Man, in the fall, Japanese Persimmons are over-the-top Awesome. I DEFINITELY recommend the huge seedless persimmons.

  • kaki! yes!

  • @__@ I could buy people with the money I would buy a melon!

  • ALl that money for a Cantaloupe!!.. well.. i have to admit it is my favorite fruit!.. but.. maybe in japan.. its not naturally made there.. so.. yea..

  • wow, i'd buy a 100$ melon, -.-

just because, i'd wanna know, if it tasted good.

  • as always ur videos ae great. even more when they are very domestic. hail to the konyaku!

  • What do Japanese boys do to konyaku? Sorry, I'm clueless...

  • i know me too

  • ROFL

    (think sexual)
