Harpo's book is the best on the Marx brothers history...and if you ever get a chance to see a kid photo of this bunch...they look like a litter of Scottish fold cats...cute as hell...long live the Marx brothers...
actually I just noticed that the audience resoinse shot was actually clever - it was after harpo suggested to the gal to come backstage with him in a lecherous type of nod - classic harpo - then the show's editor/directors put the shot of the quite staid and normal looking 1950s audience to that - not sure if this reaction was part of the live camera work or in this clip post production - but funnier!
When Groucho shakes hands with Harpo it reminded me of the time they shook hands in the hotel lobby in "The Cocoanuts", about 30 years earlier. It is wonderful seeing the two of them together again.
@cleancab Yes, I read where Groucho s son Arther stated he only knew of his dad crying once and that was when our beloved Harpo died. I also read Groucho envied Harpo s home life, one marriage for life and 4 childern. While I love all the Marx Bros I admit to loveing Harpo most of all.
A trio of superbly talented artists, those Marx Brothers. And masters of physical comedy, too; The Marxes, Buster Keaton, Chaplin, The Nicholas Brothers, the Stooges, and the incomparable Lucille Ball.
@creamyapanties yes; a hundred percent better than the Three Stooges. And they, plus the others were very talented; THE MARX BROTHERS were the early comic geniuses...
I heard that Harpo was also the fill-in genius. He could duplicate the schtick of each of his brothers, so he could take over if one of them was sick.I think he was Groucho #2 in the mirror gag in Duck Soup.
OMG!!!....Very funny here....You Bet Your Life was a great game show,Groucho and George were perfect on it,I've been a Marx Brothers fan for years anyway,I'm gonna post this on my new Reilly's Classic Tv on You Tube Facebook page here now.
I know this has nothing to do with anything, but.......I like to study old photos, TV shows etc.....up till about the hippy era people would "dress up" for almost anything. Notice how all the audience members are, the men in jackets and ties. Look up old baseball games from the 40s and 50s and the men are in jackets and ties.....people even dressed up to go to a carnival back then. The only time people dress up now is for funerals
i was touched at the part where groucho went up to harpo and said...you not going to greet me huh? took his hand and shook it. so touching. And the tone of his voice so soft and loving.
I have that book... the original edition, which I bought second-hand over 40 years ago now. I'd never seen the dustcover, though (it's missing on my copy). A wonderful book. Love the Marxes! :-)
Harpo was by all accounts the nicest of the brothers and one of the greatest pantomime of all time. His book is one of the best autobiographies written by a Hollywood star.
@dogshy61 I knew knew he had written a book till years later; I will buy it on Amazon next month. After the Holidays. He was my favorite. His harp playing was very very beautiful. He had a kind and gentle manner. My Mom heard him speak only once; I never have. He was a treasure...

@karlakor when they shake hands at 0:34 it sounds like Groucho says "just like in Coconuts, eh?"

Harpo was known as one of the kindest and most decent man in the industry, not to mention a talent hard to follow.

Groucho cried the day Harpo died as did most of us who were alive back then.
