  • nice tank! but for all of you all seeking to go all natural with the filtration of your tanks check out the turf algae scrubber you can build one yourself for like less than 50$ or spend 500$ on a santi monica.

  • Protein skimmers have their applications and some specific tanks could run for years without them, my tank is one example, but this is my tank. My main concern with skimmers is that they remove phytoplankton, bacteria and dissolved organic matter used by several organisms, like sponges. Mangroves are helpful but they are not the Holy Grail, they have adapted to anaerobic conditions and their iron uptake is high. Their main gas exchange is through the roots above water level not as chaeto

  • Hi J, it all depends on the bioload of your system. If you noticed I don't house to much fish, 5 to be exact. Fish waste and feeding is one of the main causes for high nitrogenous waste in the system. Living in Puerto Rico mangrove shoots are readly available, once the get too tall I replace them with new shoots. I keep no less than 12 at any given time. The advantage of chaeto and other submerged macroalgaes is that they will increase dissolved oxygen levels in your system.

  • wow everybody should do this setup i am and i will keep u posted for you to help me out lol

  • what size are your Taam SEIO power heads? i have the same size tank and was thinking of going with the 530 gph

  • @pranksterDoug The two SEIO Prop are 840gph each, model 1000.

  • huge leather coral and nice tank!

  • woww your tank is awesome! by the way; how many mangroves do you have to filter your 65 gallon tank?

  • @doRYEmon Sorry for the very, very late reply !!!! Currently there are 15 mangrove shoots in the sump.

  • @cvicente12 Hello I was wondering, if you have lots of mangroves in your reef tank do you HAVE TO HAVE a protein skimmer? I have quiet a bit of Cheato and I dont want to use my protein skimmer and rather use the natural way of doing things and depend on Mangrove and cheato. what would be your suggestion? Please feel free to watch my video and let me know if I am on the right track? If I get mangroves can I stop running my protein skimmer? Thanks alot in advance.wish to hear from you soon.

    Cheerz

    J

  • beautiful tank .. What light scedule do you run on the mangroves.

  • Thanks for your comment. Light schedule 11 hours, 6500K 36W compact fluorescent

  • @cvicente12

you should use skimmer.By combine skimmer and mangrove as biological filter,,you do not need to change water so often. That is the benefit using skimmer.I use this method in my reef tank,,so this is just my opinion.

    NICE VID : )

  • Could I have the specification to build this system for filtration? I am very interested. I am a biologist working with coastal and marine conservation. This system help to show some functions and important of mangrove community. I am from Dominican Republic.

  • @gosvaldog

the fact of mangrove filtration is simple..Mangrove absorb nitrate ,phospate and other nutrien in the water as their food,,at the same time it improve water quality. So high quality water will be inhabitable to marine life....

    I hope this will help : )

  • How long does it take for those shoots to grow up to the light? If it's only once every half a year or so, this could be a good, inexpensive way to filtrate a tank. If not, it's just as expensive as any old protein skimmer/bio media system, if not more expensive.

  • I live in Puerto Rico and these shoots are all over the Island. They reach the light in approximately 5 to 6 months. The tank is very stable and very low maintenance. Today too many people focus their attention on the technical stuff and forget about the relationship between the organisms and their environment (ecology).
