@tigerwoods232000 The book makes him look even worse. In it Art had absolutely no decision making power, Billie even told him where and when to sit, what look to have on his face. Pretty much Art was there because Billie didn't want to be the manager on the field as well.... but he kinda was.

Even with Pena's success in later years, his career OBP is still lower than Hatteberg's. Yeah, Pena is overall a better player because of his extra power, but it's exactly that quality which would've made him too expensive for the A's by that point anyways. Hatteberg was a better player for that season for sure, and in the long run a better value for the dollar.

Awesome! Yes, Pena did become a very good player. But he was hitting only .218 with the A's that year. He wasn't ready to play every game yet but Howe kept on playing him. I suppose that's why Beane had to get his point across to start playing Hatteberg.
