yeah exactly someone please how does a sabot round kill everybody inside... well mostly everybody... does it just splinter A LOT and kill people with shrapnel?
@Qwerty48121 Actually it hits the ammunition in the back of the turret, and blows it up. Sometimes it happens just after it has got through one of the crew member sitting in the turret. (like a big arrow wih 3000 km/h speed).
Any M1 tankers out there can help me with this question: What are the destructive effects of a M829 on a T-72 without any ammo or fuel contained inside?
I heard it can get up to 8000 degrees inside the hull with massive spall and shrapnel.
Explosive Ractive Armor negates the force of HEAT explosion. Sabot shell, being simkply in effect a long metal dart usng kinetic engery to penertrate, is not effected by the ERA. Reactive armor will not be effective against the Sabot.
Fuck no. I drive the M1A1. I know what works and what doesnt. Besides the ERA only works once. Once it blows off theres just the armor underneath. Simply reload and shoot again. Or better yet shoot a cannister and explode all of the ERA pads at once then hit it with a HEAT round. Easy enough
T72 carries anti-rod penetrator ERA on the turret
As for reloading, this is of course assuming that the other tank has physically retarded people inside as well as mentally retarded AT infantry around it
I don't know what the hell they're teaching you Americans...
The more recent ERA will prevent the armor piercing sabot. But unfortunately the T-72 simply doesnt have the range as does an M1. The T-72 can pierce Abrams armor within 1k M. Whereas the M1A1 can has a range of 4k M to engage the target. And reloading only takes seven seconds mind you.
The missiles are a lot slower than a sabot, and only a very limited number are carried. Combine that with less advanced target acquisition and fire control systems and the sabot will get there first every time.

On a T-72? Well Id say its pretty much the same on any tank really. If the above are given it would puch a hole about three inches across as a through and through. Range has a bit to do with it yes but for the most part with there being no denser material than DU theres no armor in existance able to withstand it.
@boobtuber06 The way it was described to me, though i dont know how true it is, was that when the round hits it turns the armor of the target molten along with the outer layer of the APFSDS. As it penetrates the molten armor plus DU become liquid flachettes which spray the inside of the vehicle like a shotgun blast as well as creating a poisonous gas. The flachettes shred electronics/ppl alike. The rest of the round continues on and punches through the other side which creates a suction affect..
It pokes holes in the T-72 a majority of the time. Of course most anything that penetrates the crew compartment will generate shrapnel and be hot. The tungsten penetrator would melt at 6192F so it it doesn't get to close to 8000F. Maybe someone was describing the M830 to you...
@boobtuber06 it does have massive effects on the target but doesn't reach temreatures up to 8000 degress or spalls much shrapnel all it does is enough to penetrate the armor/disable the tank and kill the guys inside
The penetrator does not burn at all. It punches through the armor. That is why its called a kinetic energy round because it uses purely kinetic energy to kill a tank. A chemical energy round uses an explosion to kill a tank.

The only aurmor type that is effectie against the sabot is composite aurmor, especially Chobbahm Armour

It would put a hole in it and spalle out the inside.

Depends on the T72
If it has proper ERA it won't even penetrate

Why are you talking about range?
Autoloader reload takes 4 seconds and missiles can travel up to 4km and penetrate any Abrams
This has nothing to do with our argument

The missile is slow, but the copper stream is fast
Missiles can have both greater range, accuracy and penetration

Except ERA which breaks dU long rods easily

the sabot breaks away so that a smaller round of ordinance can be fired through a bigger barrel and faster

Actually it burns at about 9000 degrees celcius.. allowing it to burn through any kind of armour.

the sabot was suppose to be breaking out in three piece, right?, i think the three piece sabot is the m900 round, is this thing made out of DU?
