  • my silverado gets 25 mpg... i wish it got 65!!!

  • Most first generation Honda Insight hybrid and Toyota Prius are still running with their first batteries, for more than 10 years now :).

I don't understand why people are comparing petrol/gasoline driven cars with diesel driven ones. The engine designs are different. Generally diesel cars are more efficient.

With current technologies both petrol electric hybrids (from Japan) and turbo-diesels/diesel hybrids (from Europe) are great. Both will give you 1000km + per tank of fuel :)!!!!!

  • The new Honda Civic Hybrid is equipped with Lithium Ion batteries now, lighter, higher energy density, takes less space which means more interior and trunk space. No more nickel and less pollution. Even if the batteries die they would repair them for further use or recycle them for you.

I think the EPA rated fuel economy (new Civic Hybrid) is quite amazing, at 44 MPG for both city and highway. I'm sure people could go way higher than that with a little hyper-miling skills :].

  • @mmc726: Golf BlueMotion available in Europe only. If you you want to pay over $29K for it, pay thousands more to have it shipped from Europe and make the changes required so it's street legal in the US, then sure...that makes sense. By the way, after they're done making the changes, it probably wont get 75-85 MPG's anymore. Furthermore, I'll see immediate savings with my $23K CRZ hybrid, and you'll take close to 20 years before you make up the cost difference in vehicle price vs. fuel savings.

  • I get 16mpg in my 500hp mustang... and even at 4.00 a gallon i would rather drive that because i care about the environment and regardless of what you tell me, i know that the fact remains that if the mustang goes 200k miles then it will outlast the civic due to batteries, which means less land fill waste, less pollution during the recycle process and that equates to the mustang being better on the environment, but enjoy the corporate media brain washing the ignorant American people..

  • The guy that claims he gets 75 mpg with the old Mercedes is a bold faced liar!

  • Be careful not to get a ticket. In Vancouver police are clamping down on hyper milers because they are posing unacceptable dangers on the road particularily when merging into traffic....veeeerrry veerrrry slowly. The tickets here are expensive.....$200 for impeding traffic.

  • 0o0o0o0o i wanna b a hypermiler!

  • @az015

Ohh i want to be the 18wheeler that devastates the moron holding up traffic...

  • Nice. I really love this car and I'm glad that someone's pushing it's limits!

  • he Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion (A standard Diesel engined car) can do 74.3MPG on a combined cycle or 83.1MPG extra urban. I'd rather have diesel than a hybrid anyday

  • would i be able to speak in echoes too if I were a hypermiler...?

  • That's pretty damn impressive.. I've only had my Civic Hybrid for less than a month, and I'm still a noob at trying to squeeze out the mpg. I'm trying to get my work commute (10 miles, all town driving) to stay above 55mpg. If you're doing 110mpg in town, I've clearly still got some work to do. :) Nice job.

  • Hypermile for LIFE :)!!!

  • yay buy japanese crap and destroy america. Yes you too can put americans in the unemployment line

  • That is wicked dude!! HAHaha :]!

  • Barefoot driving for hypermiller?

  • Could you explain what hypermiling techniques you used on the 65mpg trip?

  • I have a 2008 Honda Civic hybrid, and recently drove from Illinois to Texas and back. The trip was ~1600 miles, and we got 49.1 mpg on the whole trip. Wind really hurts or helps fuel economy. Into a stiff wind, all cars get less mileage, hybrids included, of course. With a tail wind, I've had in the mid-50s.

  • This car is such a nerd's car

    I want one!!

  • ***Fuel tank capacity of a Nissan Altima Hybrid is 20 gallons. If you get 749 miles on a tank of gas, you're only getting 37.45 MPG. The Honda Civic Hybrid only holds 12.5 gallons of fuel. I have an 08 model. I usually get 560 miles on a tank of fuel (44.8MPG) That's driving 70 and 75 on the highway and keeping up with traffic in the city. The fuel mileage you get is up to your driving style. Yes, you can get 70MPG from a Civic Hybrid. I've done it, but I'm also impatient and like speed =]

  • MY ALTIMA HYBRID GETS ME 749 Miles on a tank of gas.. PLUS ITS A WAY BIGGER CAR!!

  • CAPS LOCK!!!!! LOL!!!

  • youd do better if you werent in a lazy automatic

  • I would do better in a plug in prius with solar panels with the wind behind me going down hill...but, this is real life driving. Thanks for the comment.

  • @seansymons hahahahahah!!!! Excellent! :D

  • @seansymons but who would spend $1200 for solar panels that power your A/C, when all A/C does is take up 1 mpg.

but for your reply being fake reality, sure why not get solar panels:P

  • @blondemax so what he should drive a manual?? The Honda CRZ is the only hybrid manual and that just came out R TARD...

  • OMG that car is so awesome. lol I think Im going to trade my 435hp Firebird for that thing haha

  • I'm gonna trade in my unlimited MPG bicycle for a 435 hp Firebird

  • If the car shuts off when you step on the brake for hypermileage does it automatically turn back on when you hit the gas. Sorry don't know much about the hybrids yet.

  • When you take your foot off the brake, it starts up...so by the time your foot gets to the gas, it is on and ready to go. It really is a great thing to have on any car, hybrid or normal. Ten seconds of idling uses more fuel than restarting one's engine. An hour idling costs about a gallon of gas (4 cylinder)

  • i wonder how often you gotta change your starter in stop and go traffic within a year the starter gear must be totally worn

  • The civic hybrid doesn't use the starter when starting the engine back up from an auto-stop. The electric motor spins the engine back to life when you let off the brake.

  • the starter motor has a 100,000mile warranty as it is part of the hybrid system. So they are designed to last at least 8-10 years before replacement

  • @seansymons but in a prius, it doesn't just start it back up, it stays shut off until you really need it, sooo.... more gas saving!! lol

i really want to compare how a prius and civic hybrid would compare...

because a prius shuts it off even while cruising because it uses the momentum of the car to keep it going.. and once you step on the gas, the engine comes on seamlessly

  • it's a HONDA CIVIC HYBRID. you can see the logo on the steering wheel...

  • it's beyond the official ratings

  • A diesel VW gets better gas mileage. Also the digital readouts are sometimes displayed with error.

  • 65 in a hybrid isn't all that great dude, calm down.

  • Well, in a hybrid doing 40mph and going slow..you are right..but this is real driving going speed limits on highways and cross country road trips. I get more like 110mpg in town driving using a more agressive hypermile mind set...but, thanks for the comment.

  • @seansymons I do speed limits, hell I usually speed, and I dont drive a hybrid and get those miles, you just need to find better car. hybrids cause more harm then good, the nickel that need to be mined to produce the batteries, just stick with a diesel, 1982 240D Mercedes with a 6 speed transmission and you will get 65-75 mpg at freeway speeds, that and theres more room and it looks a hell of a lot better then any hybrid out there.

  • I've had over 70 mpg in my Jetta TDI, see my video response above.

  • Calculate your mileage by hand, don't rely on the the car's readout!!!!

  • The added price of a hybrid (at this time) is too much to justify based on fuel savings alone - even with hypermiling.

I have a regular civic [not a hybrid] and I hypermile. To me, getting 10 more MPG over a standard engine is not yet worth $10K or more in vehicle price.

Plus, with the CVT in the hybrids, the benefits of hypermiling are greatly reduced because the car is already "hypermiling" for you. The only thing you can really do to help yourself in a hybrid is slow down.

  • I am saving 1000 per month on gas at 65 mpg and my suburban was 10 mpg...I get a $2100 tax credit which is the first 6 month car payments and the savings in gas makes it a free car for the first year... I do not slow down...I just hypermile.

  • You must do a lot of driving to have spent $1000 dollars a month on petrol in the first place! 10mpg is a joke anyway

  • this is just bound to make people mad. imagine someone going this slow in front of you.

  • Why do you think people that hypermile go slow? Anytime I am on a single lane road, I am at or above the speed limit.

On two lanes or more, I stay as fast as the slowest person in the far right lane, usually behind a trucker or grandma.

  • I still don't understand why Toyota can "only" squeeze 50 - 65 miles to the gallon out of a hybrid when a VW Lupo TDi does something like 70mpg. BTW does Toyota offer a manual gearbox for the Prius? In the right hands they save you a lot of gas compared to an automatic.

  • You know, I'm kind of hoping to get a Smart Hybrid when they come to the states.

  • I'm happy with my ford taurus. Before you slam me, let's make a valid point. I do not have any car loan on it and because it's only worth around 6K now no expensive collision coverage either. Now if gas hits $10 a gallon I'll be in a Hybred! LOL!

  • They say it will hit 10 per gal by 2010!

  • I think it was Bill Kenny who my husband learned his techniques from. He got like 168 mpg or something crazy, but he is seriously extreme. I would be happy with 50mpg, but I think my car gets closer to 30 if I'm lucky. I can't wait to have a hybrid of my own. Gas sucks. Watch Who Killed the Electric car if you want to get mad.

  • My husband has made hypermiling and obsession. It was pretty annoying on our trip from California to Houston, Texas, but we did get decent milage despite my discomfort (it was hot and stuffy and he went really slow). He has a hybrid, but he is taking it to w hole new level by incorporating some of the techniques he learned from this guy who gets that kind of millage from standard cars. Can't remember his name.

  • Depending on where I am, I can get 80 mpg. If the max speed you can do on any road is 55 MPH, then we would all be a hypermiler!

  • go the hybrid!!!!!!!!!!

dont forget those Mrs Dash spices may weight the car down !! hahahahaha

  • oh yes- that mrs dash will weigh you down 1mpg at least!

  • ...Do I have to have updates on gas mileage every 10 minutes while on the road trip?

  • My husband updated me at least every 3 minutes on our 24 hour trip to texas. It was super annoying, but I we did get better milage when the air was off , the windows were closed and we were going as slow as legally allowed. It was a real test of my patience, I'll tell you, but he felt great about it. The best we did in our hybrid was 48 mpg though. It got 65 when it was new, but it averages over time. Still better than most cars, and certainly better than SUVs.

  • sure do braddy boy!!!! hahahaha

  • you guys are going to have SO MUCH FUN!!

advice: bring a portable, battery operated fan!! lol

  • ajhahahahha

    love the hybrid!!!!

  • Oh Brad, you know I am not a traffic nuisance!

  • Alright.. so what did you do to get 65mpg? Your starting to convince me to take my car and trade it in when I can fit into a prius.

  • How much that puppy cost?!
