  • PLEASE GOOGLE "NANCY LEE KELLY."

MY THEME SONG TO MY MUSICAL PLAY THE OPENING SONG

  • TELL IT !

    SPEAK IT BROTHER PHIL !

    TESTIFY !

  • Thank God for the furniture companies! We have all this great music that has influenced generation after generation (including Phil Alvin and the Blasters) because of them!

  • last words "...the record business, which has nothing to do with music. It has only to do with furniture. Music lives in Bars"

    sums it up perfectly.

  • Man, Phil is so clever & eloquent. He's right ! The basic argument is that the dumb ass tries to sell the big ticket item i.e. hardware, whereas the smart ass realized that the software is where all the money is. Which is why they give cell phones away for free these days. Phil Alvin for president - (more) change we can believe in ! Boy, we don't see the likes of him on American Idol these days ! He's too dangerous ! He could out-smart Simon Cowell !

  • You know he's right. Up until the late '50's records were purchased at Furniture Stores. That's also where you bought your record players. Furniture Stores are where you recorded your songs. H.C Spiers(the guy that discovered Robert Johnson) owned a Furniture Store. People would come to his store to record. He'd get paid $5.00 for every person he referred to the record company as a good prospect for recording. I didn't know Victor & Okeh were furniture manufacturers. Youtube educates too!

  • damn, take a breath dude..

  • Amazing story and reasoning. The man talks the truth. BTW, he said he would get into the Warner Bros. story but didn't. I'm curious what he'd have to say about that!

The death of the major labels isn't a bad thing in my opinion. Indies and artists are doing on their own terms now, and music once again lives in the live performances and not just on record. We've come full circle! (of course now the concert promoters are corporate whore bags who also rip off artists...)

  • Right on Phil!!!

  • woaw!

    i am spechless!

PHIL, rock on- I LOVE THE BLASTERS!!!

  • What a star. Saw The Blasters live in 1982 and was totally blown away. Keep it up!!!!!

  • Phil's obvious intelligence, insight, grasp of history and everything else led me to do some digging on him and damn, he's far more than just a great singer/songwriter/guitarist. He earned a PhD in math and artificial intelligence from UCLA. Damn! Well done man, well done!

  • @therealroadstar He has a master's degree from CSULB He's a math genius, and a mad hatter!!! The coolest

  • @therealroadstar ... true, but not really "digging up"... googled his name, clicked on the first link and read a wikipedia article. all in all, 24 seconds wouldn't constitute digging up.

  • Well said, sir.

  • This is incredible! :-) Phil Alvin talking and teaching, just as powerful as his music making! :-)

    But the ponytail, incredible ;-)

  • Phil-brilliant brother!!!!!!!!!!!! You're the king bro!

  • Teaching is a gift. Had Phil been my math teacher perhaps the class wouldn't have given me such stomach aches. One day about 25 years ago when I wanted to be a singer, Phil spent a long time explaining to me how to use the face as a musical instrument. It is a fine moment in my memory. The words he spome on this video are very true. It was about the invention of the lp and 45 players and selling the record players and the owners of CBS and RCA being the first not about the music.

  • he once yelled at me for not liking math. a fine moment

  • Disliking math is a definate handicap. There's is a lot of connected knowledge that comes from the love of math. For example, you'll never become a fabulous musician if you hate math. I hate it that I hate math.

  • Humm... just thinking... the right girl could probably haul him all around the bedroom by that ponytail.

No, not me. Lips that touch tobacco shall never touch mine. Plus, I am happily married. BUT, from a purely objective viewpoint, the guy is absolutely sexy.

    Great body. Great mind and

wasn't he born on my birthday, March 2, 1974?

  • Art Fein seems annoyed because someone else is smarter than he is. Ya know, I really respect how Art has been able to get amazing guests for nearly twenty five years.

    Art...LET THE MAN TALK!

  • Art Fein does NOT look annoyed. He is totally amused. Hey, it's his show! If he didn't love this segment he could have left it on the floor of the editing room. God bless him for keeping it. In fact, I've added it as a favorite and placed it in my "Gospel" folder.

  • Way to go, Phil! He cuts through the bullshit as well as anyone.

(Love the 'tail, btw. I've seen his hair long before, but never quite that long.)

  • Wow!I`ve never seen Phil with a ponytail. Is it real?

  • the pony tail shocks me!
