You should go to Japan, where every fruit and vegetable is immaculately packaged in a plastic box, styrofoam tray, styrofoam net, plenty of saran wrap, or any combination of the four.
I've seen plenty of vegetables in the Styrofoam trays, but not many vegetables wrapped in cling film. I was just wondering if there was a specific reason why it was done! ;)
I was going to theorize that the higher-end organic food consumers expect a higher level of aesthetics for their food, but I found an article on PackagingNews which says that wrapping a cucumber will extend its shelf life by almost 5-fold.
Good question... I was thinking of explaining this, but then got lazy. These cucumbers are called "Long English". They are grown inside and have thin, edible skins. Because the skins are thin the cucumbers go soft quickly if they are not wrapped. This farm also grows another kind of cucumber outside. The ones grown outside don't need to be wrapped because the skin is thick - but you can't eat the skin ... the cucumbers need to be peeled.
Omg, how can people survive if you had to do it like that? :)
