If you plan on using mutliple flashes(master-slave) get the 580EX II. If not, get the 430EX II and just buy diffusers and B+W filters with the extra money you still have.

That's what I'm going to do.

I'll buy:

24-70mm f/2.8L USM+430EX II+Diffuser+BW UV filter+BW Polarizer filter

instead of shelling out too much money for the 580EX II only.

In terms of power, the 580EX II beats the 430EX(the difference is not that big though)

The 430 ex ii is a great flash if youre just starting out on one. If youre more experienced with flash photography, or have the extra money, you could go for the 580.

Ok thanks. On Thursday I ordered this for $405 from Amazon. But since it wasn't arriving in time for a my shoot yesterday, I ended up renting it as well. A few things I noticed:

1. WOW, it's huge! Love it!

2. I need to spend some serious time learning how to use it with my 50D at preselected apertures.

3. The built-in diffusion disables flash autozoom.

4. No battery level indicator? WTF?

5. Without diffusion, this light is HARSH! (I knew that but I didn't have time to get diffusion).

Yeah, you can use lots of stuff for diffusion; cotton balls, Styrofoam, paper towels, etc. A little distance between the flash and diffuser helps, too.

@samgod i would highly recommend eneloop battries... They last quite long in the flash unit... covered a wedding event once from 4:30pm to 11pm and used 2 sets(of 4) for my flash(sony HVL-F58AM)
