Fanny was a better singer than a comedienne. That was not to be as "Baby Snooks" captured the radio audience need for ethnic humor more than her beautiful singing voice. I especially like this song...
My first exposure to this song was, of all things, a clip that was played on an "American Experience" (PBS) episode about the stock market crash of 1929. I did a search for "if you want the rainbow you must have the rain" and came upon this! And all I knew about Fanny Brice was that Barbra Streisand played her in "Funny Girl."
Seriously, great song. Did Barbra ever record this?
How weird! I watched the same episode of "American Experience" just now (10/31) and did the same search! I Googled the song and wound up here! Clever lyrics =)
Thank you for this! Fanny Brice's gift shines thru the very spare recording techniques of the 1920s & early 30s. She can capture my heart with the purity and simplicity of her plaintive voice. This song demonstrates (to me) what made her so special & kept her popular for 30 years. It wasn't just her comedy; it was also her pathos.
thanks ever so! i have the sheet music for this; i play the ukulele. it's extremely helpful, though, to know what the original tune sounds like. amazing.
I save the film clip and then send to something that converts the clip to a lower MB,then it can be uploaded.I never knew to convert before and the clips were mostly too large for loading as they cant be over 100MB.Sometimes the upload system is slow aswell.
I wonder why the lgblt coalition never "picked up" Fanny Brice.

This song was written by Oscar Levant (the great pianist and raconteur)--with lyrics by Billy Rose.

Did Fanny write this? Who is the composer?

I'm pretty sure that Billy Rose wrote this, her third husband.
