I LOVED this movie! I think I saw it 2 or 3 times, which was a lot in the '60s. After this, I saw everything Jason Robards did! He was definitely one of the greatest actors of his time! Wish he were still alive. Actually, the entire cast was perfection!
Been my favorite movie since 1965, when it was nominated for Best Picture and lost out to The Sound of Music. Won Best Adapted Screenplay as I recall and Martin Balsam won for Best Supporting Actor. Cast was phenomenal, Herb Gardner a genius. Though dated, it holds up fairly well.
i saw this movie the first time on tv in the 70's i believe...i never forgot what a great work of art it was. i did not see it again until a few months ago when it was shown on channel 13... brought back many memories...the movie is very sad and moving for me and always brings tears to my eyes...its a dark comedy. the comedy of life i guess with all its pain and sorrow. i love the scene at the peers..."it gives you a sense of beginning"
one of the best movie ever...Robarts was one of the classic greats. he raised the bar for everyone... a true artist...on the same level as Spencer Tracy and Humphrey Bogart
Any fellow New orkers know where the exteriors of their house was shot? I know it's SUPPOSED to be Manhattan, but I think it's somewhere in Brooklyn. I sure can't picture anyone living across the street from huge vacant lots in Manhattan, then or now.
It was filmed on the Upper West Side, 70s to 90s between Columbus and Amsterdam. I think the vacant lots were from row houses that were razed to make way for housing blocks during the 1960's. Hope this helps!
Laughed along with the audiences in Bklyn, NY, when this first came out. Almost non-stop full bellied laughter, tears streaming down eyes for more than 1/2 the movie. Saw it 7 times in the span of a few months. It no longer produces hysterical laughter, maybe it's me, maybe the times have changed. I still love it. I luckily found a VHS copy years ago, and still have it somewhere, when I get a new computer, maybe I could burn it onto a DVD. Loved this song. Was that Barbara Harris?
I never forgot this song since the first and only time I saw this movie for a quarter at the Bardstown Movie Theater in Louisville when the movie first came out. Excellent movie and very talented acting.
One of my all time favorite films. Waiting for it to be on dvd; it's on my netflix list too. The line about the 43 year old midget is used often in our family, though the (grown) kids have never seen the movie.
This is a superb film - for anyone who enjoys a really good story and excellent acting. This movie is almost never on - yet I'll bet trash like "Sixteen Candles" and "Las Vegas Vacation" are each on twenty times every month.
Anyhow - Robards is one of the best actors we ever had, and Barry Gordon is superbly talented. (Unlike most modern kid 'stars' who mug for the camera and spit out lines like they're reading them.) Excellent movie, very obscure, a rare gem.
Just saw this and recalled the last time I did was the night of March 25, 1978. I was in labor, 21 yrs. old, with my son Keith, who was born the next afternoon on Easter Sunday. While I was in the hospital, the scenes from this movie made me laugh, that's how good it was, even in such pain.
Great movie! Have been recommending this to friends for 40+ years (it was on TCM last night, but at 2am). More clips please, including those with Chuckles, the Chipmunk.
If I could find someone my age who loves this movie as much as I do, I would fall head over heels in a second. This is one of my favorite movies of all time- lots of classic lines, subtly romantic, great acting. They do need to put it on DVD, my VHS is wearing out.
MMM. The most romantic scene in any movie, in my opinion. I will one day meet a girl my age, 23, who will have seen this movie and understands good old fahsioned, classy romance. My favorite movie. Thanks for posting it.
Dammit, this is a fucking awsome movie!

Murry Burns has been and still is my greatest role model. And this film has not been released on DVD yet..Why?

My God, the likes of Jason Robards, Barbara Harris and Williams Daniels in one movie ... and it probably cost you a buck and a quarter to see 'em.

The boy Barry Gordon grew up in Massachusetts and he sang the song "I'm getting nuttin' for Christmas" in the 50's...pretty cool :)
