Jus got the wave in the post, the corners of the rolled in handles at both pommel ends with the flange extension have tiny .5 to .75mm long cracks. This is as a result of the way in which they are cut from the sheet and then bent at 90 degrees away from the flange during manufacture.Very poor finishing but consistent throughout, all the tools are spot on though. Far away from the finish on a Victorinox which leaves this tool for dead in that department. Hope yours is spot on.
i can't stand that it has a bit driver and a dedicated standard screwdriver. why not put something useful there. if you have a combination bit with philips on one end and standard flathead on the other, why the heck are they wasting space like that. i have been watching these damn reviews for a week looking for a multitool that makes sense and find the same problem with the charge, surge, and the wave. you should be able to pick the tools you need when ordering a multitool, not have redundancy.
@prometheus19799791, You bought the TTi right? I think that the standard flathead screwdriver is supposed to double up as a prybar, prob best to get an 'Artifact' for that. But I agree that there should be greater personalisation options. I got enuff dedicated knives and hate using small saws, so I'm going see if I can take them out and put in spacers. Yeah, and I juz bought one of these. The pliers seemed tougher than the CX and 40 bucks cheaper thn TTi
@tessl8d i bought the charge ti. it is exactly the same as the wave but, with titanium handles. i like that it doesn't have the wire crimpers on the pliers. even though the titanium adds 33% more squeezing capability the crimpers weaken the plier tips creating a trade off. i don't care for guthooks because they also weaken the blade as well. i think after all the research i have done that the wave(in current production) is the best. but the ti has titanium handles and smooth opening action.
Just got mine to replace one I had for years that I lost recently. Those blades on this Wave are sharp man. He did miss out the wire stripper on the bottle opener in this video. They are quite expensive in the UK but they quality build. Most live sound engineers I know have one.
One thing i'd like as an option for all these is replacement outer tools. Not in an adaptor system, just a loose bunch of the outer tools that you can replace the ones you have with.
I swear by my wave, I carry it everywhere...it does not leave my side EVER..I use my wave every day. I could pick my wave outta 1000 if they were put ot in front of me on a table. It is one of the best things ive ever bought in my life.I 'am a fussy bastard when it comes to my kit. This is definatley one of the best things i have ever bought EVER...now thats an endorsement .
my dad found one outside a tool store it was barried in snow he took it home and dryed it and sad i could have it it has some rust on the pliers and a little bit on the plane edge blade and the surrated blade but it still works like a dream
I am a blue collar guy and I take this tool to work everyday. It is indispensable. However, I wear it on a belt because it is heavy. With the weight comes true functionality. I always take the time to strap it to my belt. It seems by wearing it you are never lost for opportunities to actually use it. Leatherman tools are more expensive but worth it.
J'hésitais à acheter ce Leatherman avant de voir cette vidéo et super je l'ai acheté sur le site inuka c'est la ou je l'ai trouvé le moins cher 89€ donc je me suis fais ce petit plaisir !
this tool is indeed beautiful. just received it, and i can't stop going through it. i'll go out and say it's better than the supertool but only cuz i'm emotional right now.
Leatherman backs up their products like no other company. A Leatherman is for life. I can only respect a company like Leatherman. Nothing but respect because they BACK UP their tools and and are proud of what they are making. Keep it up!
Things a workhorse, I don't hesitate to beat the shit out of my black oxidized wave and it keeps ticking. Used the saw a couple days ago to take oversized branches off the christmas tree to throw it out.
@WarMachineWW2 At the moment im having the exact opposite problem. One of the handles has gone too loose. It is really annoying because every time you go to use the pliers the handle moves instead of the pliers opening. Is there something I can tighten?
Hey man, just a heads up the "old wave" is actually kind of a collectors item now. Many people prefer it because the fixed phillips driver is more robust than the bit driver. Furthermore, the scisors are larger and have a bigger cutting capacity.
If you want to get a new wave you may be able to get almost all of your money back on your old wave as long as it is in decent condition.
i like how leatherman made the wave and charge have both a smooth and serrated knife blade, having the best of both worlds. i love this tool im getting one soon in black oxide. these guys know what they are talking about, cant beat a leatherman!
I never leave my house without the wave it's a tool that is very handy in a everyday life, if u clean and oiled it will last u for a long time. Well worth $70
My wave has rusted so much it is basically inoperable. I wouldn't say i've been overly rough on or anything either. Can anyone tell me if this is covered by their 25yr warranty? Cheers.
I doubt it. They expect you to clean and oil your knife periodically. Just like a gun's warranty doesn't cover malfunction if you don't clean it. If you are wondering how to clean it, google "how to clean a knife." Wikihow has an article, as I recall.
you can cut through anything with a diamond file except other diamonds. that means it wont wear down because a material thats soft cant scratch a material harder than it
its a great tool i just got it and it wont leave my side. There is also a built in lanyard ring that can be pushed out from inside the saw blade area at the bottom of the tool (oposite of where the saws hinge or whatever you call it is) so don't go and buy a lanyard ring seperately :P lol.
Thank you for this review, this review made me buy this. I am going to the military soon and I need some good quality multitool, and I've heard by friends that the leatherman is the best.
Oh okay. Does the smooth blade stay sharp for long? Oh and what would I need the file for? I mean, it's not that I can cut metal with such a small file
What kind of stones do you sharpen the blade with, and where can I buy them? I think I have some diamond sharpening tools for speed skates, but I'm not sure if that is good for sharp edged blades.
I am a Machinist(that means metal worker), and believe me, all the Leatherman files are fantastic, usable files. Even the little ones on their keychain tools work great if you use them in the applications they are meant for. If you don't think you can use a tool on a Leatherman, you are dead wrong. Best tool on the market.
oh, and the wire strippers are not in the pliers, they are on the base of the can opener. What everyone calls wire strippers are actually hard wire cutters. If you try to strip wire with these you will most likely smash your wire and have to cut a new length.
Well, a file is meant to cut metal, but not like you are thinking. It is meant to take small flakes off a little at a time, and the leatherman files are just as good as the expensive Nicholson files that are in my Machinists chest. So yes, you can cut metal with them. If you want to cut thick metal, get a cutting wheel, but a file is meant more as a deburring tool.
Deburring refers to the removal of a sharp edge after making a cut, for example, when you cut a pipe with a pipe cutter(that's what I would recommend) the cutting tool leaves a sharp edge on the fresh cut surface. This is called a burr. Files are used to get rid of this burr so you don't cut yourself. A file is not necessarily a cutting tool, it is an accessory to cutting tools.
You got it, good luck in the military. I just bought one of these too, I can't wait to get it. I am still using a Leatherman blast, but the Wave has those outside blades, gotta have'em.
1. you forgot the wirestripper thats at the bottle / can opener
2. i have weird brown spots on my seatherman that looks like rust. do u know what it is?
i have my leatherman for about 2 months now and i love it. i use if especially for boating and u can do anything with it. if ur someone that does some extreme sports thanthe wave is the tool for u!

my basic EDC is a folding knife, my juice s2, my car keys with a LM micra and mini maglite on it, a cellphone, a zippo, and my identification cards and a source of money.
it's probably because it has some of the better features in leatherman, is full size, one handed opening straight and serrated blade, a saw file and all that other goodness, and is cheap by comparison.
well i did say that its cheaper plus has most of what a charge does. and i myself don't really like the skeletool as much, i prefer my juice. i do own a wave and a kick though
The Wave has the same features as a Charge AL. The Charge TTi has two additional features those being the cutting hook and the crimper. I think I'll go for the wave.
You have to send it back to the factory. They use Torx bits you probably won't be able to get so just contact Leatherman. They're a fair company wand will possibly just replace it.
Jus got the wave in the post, the corners of the rolled in handles at both pommel ends with the flange extension have tiny .5 to .75mm long cracks. you can cut through anything with a diamond file except other diamonds. that means it wont wear down because a material thats soft cant scratch a material harder than it

But diamond dust can still break off the file, thus wearing it down. This will take a long time with a diamond file though...

chip as in small pieces of the blade come off after frequent use

What exactly can you do with the files? Cut metal?
DonQuixotec 2 years ago
Well, a file is meant to cut metal, but not like you are thinking. It is meant to take small flakes off a little at a time, and the leatherman files are just as good as the expensive Nicholson files that are in my Machinists chest. So yes, you can cut metal with them. If you want to cut thick metal, get a cutting wheel, but a file is meant more as a deburring tool.
motodrummer35 2 years ago
Okay, would it be possible for me to cut through a lead pipe. Like small water pipes, you know?
And what does the word "deburring" mean? :D
DonQuixotec 2 years ago
Deburring refers to the removal of a sharp edge after making a cut, for example, when you cut a pipe with a pipe cutter(that's what I would recommend) the cutting tool leaves a sharp edge on the fresh cut surface. This is called a burr. Files are used to get rid of this burr so you don't cut yourself. A file is not necessarily a cutting tool, it is an accessory to cutting tools.

You have to send it back to the factory. They use Torx bits you probably won't be able to get so just contact Leatherman. They're a fair company wand will possibly just replace it.
