I think dogs have an instinct that tells them "hey this is a baby, no harm no foul", cos if you watch dogs with their puppies they do largely the same things - they tug on their ears, crawl all over them, and generally play with them.
Well, except puppies have teeth. For the dog a soft baby hand is prolly a welcome change.
My shepherd does the same thing. They are awesome with babies. Mine always lies next to my niece guarding and watching over her and licking her every so often. German shepherds are the best. I love my dog!
