  • come on, "there's no way back" it's such a dramatic statement, you can always -z... and doing the "painting" on the mask requires the same accuracy! but nice and clear tutorial, thanks!

  • this is true but at the time I was running like 300 mb ram so I could co back only so far. masks just provide safety. easy to change now or later. but I have more ram in my macbook now so i could go back.

  • Cool, thanks man!

  • jokers wife/girlfriend!

lol jk.... thx very much =D

  • thank you very much!

  • You sound like Ned Flanders babe xx ^^

  • @fleaflyflop yaddelly duddly dooo

    hello nighbour

  • its great

  • great tutorial! thanks man!

  • awesome

  • 3:20

  • it hurts to see u working

  • The Undo tool says 'Hi'.

    But still, nice tutorial.

  • sometimes its the simple tutorials that allow you to figure out the more complex stuff (as it shows working with layers)

  • Does anyone know how to do this in gimp? I can do the actual isolation but I can't change the color.

  • I physically own photoshop, I bought it and when I got my new computer i decided not to install it because it takes too much of my resources. I don't want to have to install photoshop again.

  • doing this in Gimp is almost the same process. duplicate the layer (shift-ctrl-d). then go to the Colors menu and select desaturate. then go to the Layers menu and select Mask > Add Layer Mask... hit ok. now when you paint black with the brush tool the layer underneath is revealed, showing the color. i suggest using the brush with blurred edges

  • Great! I used the layer effect multiply but It was sometimes unreliable but I am interested in changing the color like you did. Any suggestions?

  • how do I get the tool, you didnt even say it

  • why not just undo?

  • What version of photoshop is this? Or does it make a differance?

  • i think that it is Photoshop CS it doesn't make a difference i was able to do this with my Photoshop CS3

  • Thanks you so much.. It really helped.. :)

  • Thanks for the refresher course. I haven't done this in an age. I am having too much fun with it now!

  • thanks i always wondered how to do this...

  • great tutorial. Extremely informative and useful. Thankyou

  • nice :]

  • didn't you make a "little click by click."

I mean you must not to finish a lot of things in a time. you can erase a half of eye, then release mouse button. and continue erase full of eye.

so you can press Ctrl+z or Ctrl+alt+z to undo wort to last you release the mouse button...

  • put masks are soo much safer. They also allow you to do other adjustments and such later on.

  • It's photoshop

  • which program is it ? :)

  • i think photoshop

  • Your Welcome

  • dude this is sweet i dried and it worked....TY

  • Hmm interesting, it should work.

idk, I've never had that problem before.

  • I have CS3 and my when I use the color white to erase my mistakes, which are in black, (this is after i masked it white) it would not fix it. What should I do?

PS great vid BTW taught me a lot.

  • OR you can just use the paint brush tool at about 50% capacity...and there u go...

  • Hey Gingbourdon :)

How do I add layer mask - reveal all on the Photoshop Elements 6.0?

Its all black and shiney and I dont know where things are anymore! D:

    Please help :x

    -Sarah x

  • hmm hmmm I never used elements before, but is there a menu at the top for layer? If so it should say layer masks>reveal all and hide all.

Hope that helps, if it doesn't let me know, and I'll look it up for you.

  • Well I dunno.. there's:

Layer Style>Hide All Effects (all the rest arent selectable..)

    :S

  • I'll do some research in a minute. I actually had a photoshop elements cd that came with my wacom tablet, but I gave it away, becuase I thought I'd never use it.

Wish I still had it now. lol

  • Its ok now, I've swapped elements for CS3 Extended. Should be ok.... for now.....

  • Well thats one way to fix it. lol

  • can I do this on picasa2 photoshop?

  • Sin City effect is BLACK and White, not greyscale. What I'm trying to say: It should be darker, colors should be flashier too

  • The point is was to show the effect. Its up to the individual to choose whatever b/w method they desire.

  • True 'nuff, my apolagies

  • Its ok, I prolly should have showed some b/w techniques.

  • u use adobe, what type of adobe, i only see C3

  • Im using CS. idk if you can get anything but CS3 now, maybe on ebay or something. Im pretty sure their only selling CS3.

  • Thats actually a pretty basic thing, i imgaine quite a few people can already do that some way or another. Good tut though. Just don't call it the "Sin City Effect", its not.

  • I know, I was educated on here about the title.

  • you should just say monochrome colour.

anyone that doesn't know how to do this shouldn't use ps at all.

  • shame. this is so easy and any stupid graphist knows that. dont call it sin city effect for god sake.

  • pfffff thats too easy effect :S

  • Kool man... very creative idea to do noir effect . Keep up with good work. :)

  • Is this a PC or a Mac Program? And what is the program called?

  • The program is Adobe Photoshop, and it is available for both pc and mac.

  • That is so cool!!! Thanx alot man!

  • Wow thnxn bro .. very helpfull 5 stRS ..

  • Thanks Alot, Very Helpful!

  • conjo swa,,esey si ta master ,,i btw sin city ta un di mi favoritonan

  • I heard, it's called colourkey or something like that

  • maybe, I use my own method I tried one day, by desaturating all the colors but the color of the object I want to stand out. Then use masks if you have to, but perhapse colorkey would work better, idk never tried it.

  • OR......

u can use the color EXTRACT setting on

    your camra or camracorder.

i think its under the color CONTROL setting.

    its alot easyer that way.

and im betting that THEY did it.

being as how renting an editor cost's like

$200 an hour and what u were doing

would probaly take ALOT of time

    going frame by frame.

  • Well in adobe After Effects you can use keyframes and masks to cut down editing time.

This was just to show how to create photos with the same effect, not video.

  • it isn't about sin city effect

  • nice very helpful.. 5 stars for you :)

  • Great! Thanks!

  • vaya mierda de video no?

  • jajaj si!

  • You can do the same thing in psp o.O

  • Thank you much. This was quite helpful.

  • As good as a movie as it is, I hate sin city, because now people call it "Sin City Effect" it's "Film Noir", a very old film style that was around far before sin city...

  • The "Sin City" effect is merely the juxtaposition of color and b+w. Film noir is a genre of film and film aesthetic that utilizes black and white picture. There is no color in film noir movies, like "The Killing" or "Maltese Falcon".

  • It's called the Sin City effect because the way they do it is different from film noir. Film Noir uses the video camera for the effect but Sin City uses green screen effect to get theirs because just regular black and white doesn't cut it.

  • awesome man this is really cool

  • what program is it that your using?

  • I would say that it is photoshop

  • I've been trying to do this, but its not working. I follow your instructions step by step and when I get to the point where I start painting with the black brush, nothing happens on any layer. I'm using CS3 if that matters at all (I don't think it should).

Any ideas of whats going on?

  • awesome

  • Great stuff. Thanks for posting.

  • THX THX

  • thank dude, but u little messed it up

  • Can This Be Done On Adobe PhotoShop Elements 5.0?

I Cant Get The Layer Mask On There.

  • Hmm idk I've never mess with elements...

  • i assume this is all in photoshop...

  • Nice, but nobody can do this self xD.

  • THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

  • You can but I'd rather have the saftey of a layer.

  • you said you can't go back what about ctrl z ?

  • Is this translateable to PSP? It's a really awesome Tut by the way, thanks so much for puting it up here.

  • That red Eye looked awsome

  • u need the rain effect and the desaturate is not enough for the black and white. you need the levels after desaturating the image and itl create an ever more sincity effect

  • well it was just a simple how to then they can do Levels, curvse, gradient map,or channel mixer.

  • i suppose i would have to add a filter if i wanted to have the image a little grittier

  • I might do that here in a few

  • Pretty cool.

I think you should make a tutorial on how to do this in After Effects.

  • Wow, I've been wondering how to do this for awhile now, and I just happened to stumble across this, haha. Thanks for the help! :D

  • =D Very helpful!! Thank you.

  • with ctrl+z you can undo

  • yes,but there is a limit to how many times you can do undo, and if you do enough actions to go over the limit, then your screwed.

  • really? :-o hmm in adobe premiere pro you ahve 25 times for undo :-) but in adobe photoshop i dont know, thanks anywy :-)

  • well It might be the same, but I think you can change it, but if you do anything to the photo before you do this effect, you might be pushing it. I just like to have layers just incase :)

  • i use in adobe premiere pro, 2 layers like here one of them i make it (we are talking for videos right now) in b/w and the other in color :-)

  • I've never tired it in premiere, but I've done it in After effects

  • After effects is great i just download it 1 month ago.. errr i meant i just purchase it lol :-)

  • yea, I seen some wicked stuff done with it, Im waiting till I get more ram though, so I can mess around in it easier.

  • yes the ramis very very important but for rendering (for videos) it is also very important to have a good cpu (without forgetting also the graphic card) but in the forum they all say the same thing: adobe premiere pro dont get his resources from the graphic card but from the ram AND cpu :-(and i have only 1.8 Ghz

  • I can't believe I forgot these things... I took a course called "photo editing/web design" in freshman year high school and I don't recall learning anything of this sort XD we used PS7 in that class....good job~

  • I know PS as if I'd created it. Still, I like your voice. It makes the tut very nice to watch.

  • Yeah I like it to.

  • Very good!Very nicely explained!

  • photoshop is cool

  • can u make a video and have the sin city effect in it?

  • Use Adobe AfterEffects, not PS

  • Ik, but everyone seems to like doing to pics, so ya

  • Woop that really helped me... now I have a kickass picture on my MySpace and everyone's raving about it xD Hahaha.

  • It gets close but it's not the Sin City effect. It's more then juust black and white. It's airbrushing, contrasting, etc.

  • This is just the basics of the effect. If you can make a tutorial showcasing all of that I'd love to see it.

  • Thank you! I've been looking for this for a long time now! Good job ^^

  • Thats hot, your voice is hot, your hot. This video is hot, the effect is hot, that girl is hot, your curser is hot, red is hot, layers are super hot, and photoshop is the hot shit.

  • Thats hot, your voice is hot, your hot.

  • Thanks for that - was really helpful!

  • That was great, I love it! Gonna get ps and do this all day lol.

  • wow! thanks man!

  • cool

  • well done

  • thats something that all photoshop people will know how to do from experience so its no big deal. The thing that people want to know is how to get that effect on a video and not a still image.

  • I have something similar called PhotoSuite4

  • Gee, thanks! I'll try that as soon as I get home. Cool! I love playing with photoshop! Trying playing with adobe after effects. My friend told me that it's cool too. Haven't tried it yet but I'm also planning too. Like any other adobe programs, these two are workable programs. Meaning, they are like sisters. You can place your works palettes from photoshop to after effects to make it move, or just like what the program's name dictates, it gives effect to your work. ;-) Thanks again for the tip!

  • Grrr, You People && Your PHOTOSHOP!!! HAhaha, I Reallly REALLY Want This Program... Mind Givin' Me Tha Down Low... Since You Have It, I Figure You Can Give Me A Better Perspective On What To Buy (If You Could Just Generally Review Any You Know Of, I'd Be REALLY Happy...)

Thanks, Cool Vid... Would've Never Known How People Do That If Not For This LoL...

  • So if that is in photoshop.. are the steps the same for GIMP except in different locations?? Oh and awesome tut, at first when I saw the title of this I was looking for the Sin City effect in videos, but I guess that depends on your editing program.

  • wat program is this?

  • photoshop

  • Thanks Pal :D

  • But if you use the Eraser tool, you can just have the Navigator go into more than 100% so it's closer and you can see all of the pixels. And then you can just start erasing it with a 1-pixel sized eraser (or more). In my opinion, it's an easier technique ^^;; But yours it great too :D

  • mmmmmm interesting!!! :)

  • your voice is sexy!!i bet youre a hot guy!lol

  • good video, i was wondering how to do that. thanks ;d

  • Actually, I don't even use layers for this... I know, that's photoshop blasphemy, but that's the joy of photoshop (or gimp, for that matter). I just lasso what I want colored, or uncolored, or the color changed, and feather etc... I just use the desaturate tool, so i don't even have to completely desaturate everything... Then I can saturate the hair to make it like goldie... use a lower opacity where the hair is whispy, over the face or in the air, it all works around to the same thing.
