The book feels like a slightly lesser version of mirai nikki(future diaries if you live in america), Mirai nikki was the story of a girl who enters a game to help her boyfriend who has been selected among 12 people to fight to the death with only there diaries that can see the future, the difference being that Yuno the main character of future diary is so much better written and developed then Katniss, but even then it is a great read, I would still give it 3.5 or 4 stars which is still good.
hunger games is AWESOME!!!(insert singing voice on that word haha). i think youll really enjoy the last 2 books. but just to let u know, the third one does go in a connecting but still different direction than the other two. i hope u enjoy so u can be among us obsessed masses :>
would you say that The Hunger Games of more like Twilight or more like the Sookie Stackhouse series? in other words, is there a lot (or some) sexy scenes in it?
Because of you I read Divergent! It was awesome! I pre ordered the sequel. I have a question though. Did you get the Kindle Fire? If so, do you like it?
If you enjoyed the Hunger Games, you might want to try out Battle Royale. It was written by a Japanese author and the premise is similar to that of the Hunger Games - a collapsed world, an authoritarian government ruling with an iron fist, and each year a randomly-selected high school class is selected in a competition where everyone has to kill each other to stay alive. A manga series and movies have also been made - I really enjoyed the movie (although it's very gory).
I'm a huge Hunger Games fan! In fact, I'm trying to get a part in the movies. Have you read all three books? If so, you should see some of my Hunger Games videos. My videos contains spoilers if you haven't read all three books. Anyway, I know the books very well if you ever have any questions about them.
I'm a long time subscriber so obviously I love your videos (on both channels) I just have a suggestion because it would help a lot when I'm watching your videos and thats just to either put in the description bar OR to say it before the review is if the video contains spoilers. @TheThirdShift ok now I can continue watching lol One more quick question what did you think of the whole trilogy of the hunger games? I have the 1st & 2nd book. I'm almost done reading the hunger games & I cant imagine catching fire & mocking jay being as good.I wasn't sure if you did a review on them. Divergent sounds a lot like The Hunger games from the synopsis am I right or wrong? Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my comment. LOVE YOUR VIDEOS SO MUCH!
I loved The Hunger Games! So fast and easy to read with a great story. I can't wait for the movies.
The Road is also one of my favorite books. McCarthy is brilliant! The Road gave me nightmares after reading it, mostly from the man on the mattress scene. The movie was ok (Viggo Mortenson was amazing!) but the book was much better.
@iheartYK oh the A Song of Ice and Fire series, as it is actually called, is GREAT! very brutal but very well developed characters. you should not get too attached to the characters because they all die at some point or another. but it is an amazing books series!
oh, would you say that The Hunger Games is in any way like A Song of Ice and Fire? because then I'm definitely going to read it!
i love that you do such a mix of videos...it shows that your into so much more then just makeup and stuff. thanks for the reviews..im always looking for good reviews of books. :)
Another interesting post-appocalyptic novel is The Other Side of the Island by Allergra Goodman :) I read it a while back so I don't remember how long it took me to finish it, but I'm gonna re-read it once I finish Catching Fire. It's a young adult novel about a girl named Honor and her life after moving to a group of islands that used to be North America. The islands seperate society from nature by using Enclosure, and her family eventually rebels and her parents are taken away.
I found "The hunger games" full of flaws (well, it may be a bad thing that I looked for them on purpose lol but meh..), and I couldn't stop thinking that the idea is so nice but the books are so poorly written, in the sense that it simply lacks analysis, the story is just described as it is, I mean, the emotions are quite intense now, but imagine how amazing the book could have been with a good writer writing it.
Anyhow, it's YA fiction, I guess it simply can't be bright, or the YA are bored xD.
I love the Hunger Games Trilogy! Can't wait for the movie, and I hope the movie version doesn't ruin the books for me like the Twilight Saga movies did..
I would say The Chrysalids by John Wyndham falls in the genre of the post-apocalyptic world, as well as human nature. Its written after WWII, which makes much reference to the history in WWII. I'm sure you'd like it.
I read this series...and I thought it was wonderful and very empowering. I also think it is very appropriate for all ages! Especially women...since it has a strong female lead, I think it can be pretty inspiring :)
My Fiancée and I saw The Road and thought it was an excellent movie and plan to read the book. I thought the movie did a good job illustrating the relationship between the boy and his father, which was touching. The father's behavior reminded me of a female lioness protecting her cubs, very primal. Outside of the father/son relationship, I thought the movie did a great job portraying what it might be like in a post apocalyptic environment, which is a scary thought.
heard of Hunger Games from a friend of mine, and after watching this vlog i will purchase the book. THE ROAD i watched on ONDemand and really liked it. never read the book but the movie was awesome.
personally, i found the hunger games absurdly predictable. i enjoyed it, don't get me wrong, but i knew exactly what would happen within the first couple chapters. that, to me, makes it very young adult esque.
I love post-apocalyptic/dystopian novels and really enjoyed the first two Hunger Games books, but Mockingjay was...unfortunate. Have you gotten that far yet?
I'm actually reading The Hunger Games in my English class at school right now. I was surprised that they finally found a good book for required reading!
I'm an avid reader if you've ever wondered why I have so little videos uploaded it's because I perfer reading, if it weren't for that i would have a few hundred videos posted here on youtube
Thanks a lot for recommending The Hunger Games! Otherwise I'd never buy it, I mean I ususally don't like that much such kind of fiction. But this book I just LOVED!!! I have already ordered the two other books. And The Road as well. Can't wait to get them (though amazon.de is always very quick with delivery, but a couple of days seems to be quite long now :-))) Again, thanks a lot for this video!!!
I am Absolutely in love with the Hunger Games series. So brilliant and talk about an intense storyline! It is so detailed and sharp. I am now reading the last book in the series- Mockingjay and I am going slowly through it- because i don't want it to end :( I will have to read the road I know my friend has it. So glad you are a reader! Yay- we need more readers in this world!
i am a book worm since i am small but its crazy that you say its inexpensive. right now i cant buy a lot stuff so it kinda bugs me hearing things like that because you shouldnt generalize it like that. A book costs average 15-20 euro, its not like everyone can afford 4 in a month, even if i would read 50 if i could
@TheThirdShift I agree! I go to my local library so much that they know my name! I'm a university student so reading books from the library is one of the cheapest forms of entertainment available to me.
@PhoenixsArt Being a bookworm is nothing to be ashamed of,I'm 17 and I love books more than people, well except my family/friends. But Reading is my first show of entertainment cause it is amazing,I call books "movies of the mind"
Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk. Chuck also wrote Fight Club. This novel is so visual, brutal, and addicting! It is DEFINITELY not for the faint of heart! It's one of those books where you're surprised if you don't get nightmares from reading it. It's such a good read, but extremely disturbing. lol

If you haven't seen Battle Royale: It takes place in Japan and every year(?) a class of students are taken to a deserted island. They are each given a different weapon/gadget and have three days to kill all the other students. If at the end of three days more than one of them is alive the collars around their necks will explode.
It's gory and graphic but I definitely recommend watching it.
Wow, those two books sound really interesting. I actually heard of them before but never had the chance to read them. Anyway, thanx alot for these two recommendations!(:
Today I bought The Road and I started reading it. I love it! Thank you for the recommendation. You should share more often with us what you are reading...especially the books for adults!
I really liked this video! Can you do more of these in the future? I would love to hear more of your recommendations. Im definitely going to check out the two that you mentioned! Thanks!
Hi Julia, I watched this video last night and made a mental note of the books you mentioned. Low and behold today while I was browsing charity shops I saw a copy of 'The Road' so of course grabbed it. I've just finished it and have to say thank you SO much for the recommendation, it's been years since I read a book that moved me as much as this one. It's both beautiful and terrifying, I think the imagery will stay with me for a very long time. Easily one of the best books I've ever read. x
i love that series! as soon as my local library gets the mocking jay (3rd book) i'll be finished reading the series :( the last book in the universe is short and a good post apocalyptic type read, it's also a young adult (YA) novel. some other interesting YA sci fi: His Mortal Instruments series (spun off a new series: infernal instruments) and I am number four by pittacus lore. i hope you post more book recommendations!
You might also like Stephen King's The Long Walk. It's similar in that it's a sort of fight to the death.... very gruesome with an incredibly creepy twist at the end.
If you're into fantasy-type books another great young adult author is Gail Carson Levine. Easy reads with an edge. She wrote Ella Enchanted which stands as my favorite y.a. book. If you've had the misfortune to see the movie, THE BOOK IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT. I was very disappointed in the movie after loving the book for so long.
Apocalyptic/Dystopia is my favorite genre of movies/books. Now don't hate me but I thought The Road was overrated lol. I didn't enjoy it as much as other books. I really enjoyed Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake, great pick.
I second the recommendation for The Stand, the best Stephen King book IMO. I also really recommend Blindness by Jose Saramago.
Another book of this genre that you might want to check out is The Passage. It's not a perfect book by any stretch of the imagination. But the first part of it is superb. There is one section about the evacuation of children from Philadelphia by train that will have your hair standing on end. The second part needed a good editor but there are still moments of brilliance. Highly recommended.
I love when you recommend books for us to read. I started the Sookie Stackhouse novels based off your recommendation and I love them. I'm on book 6 right now (Definitely Dead). I also checked out season 1 of the show but I hate it. So unlike the books.
My cousin tried to tell me about this book and it sounded really really lame lol. But EVERYONE is talking about it and is telling me to read it, so I think I might have to check it out.
I'm on my third audiobook and I have to say I really enjoy how convenient they are! But I have to say, some of the narrators voices can get on your nerves :)
Ive been obsessed with The Hunger Games as soon as it was released. Ive had to wait a couple of years for Mockingjay to come out lol it would be AMAZING if you did a Katniss Everdeen inspired look.
Love Audible!! Started using it when I began studying for my MBA. There was no way I could sit and enjoy my favorite authors the regular way after reading a gazillion chapters about business!
hey i know this may sound weird but can you make a video to learn like the basics of german? cuz i know you speak german and know because thanks to you and my favorite music group (rammstein) i wanna learn german!! danke irgendwie!! :)
omg yes i love hunger games catching fire and mocking jay are wonderful as well and they get better they dont get chessier.it just so sad how the capitol take these people children and they are in control if they live or if they die this has been the best book sereis i have ever read i am glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks for the tips. I can currently reading "Kiss the Girls" by James Patterson. Really intense thriller. Its excellent and exciting but also very disturbing. Definitely not a teen read. But I find the main bad guy fascinating for some reason.
Both these books sound awesome, I think ill get to reading them during school. I remember my friends had made their own short movie for the hunger games for a project & i thought that was really good. Also, what Lipstick/Lipgloss are you wearing (yea i know.... off topic)? Cuz its sooo beautiful!!!
I love the Hunger Games books, and I'm also a fan of The Road. I'm glad someone else likes the post-apocalyptic genre. :)
I read an EXCELLENT book recently, called 'The Name of the Wind' by Patrick Rothfuss. It's the beginning of an 'Epic' style trilogy in a style similar to J. R. R. Tolkien, Robert Jordan, and others of the sort. It's about 660 pages, but a very fast-paced read. Once of the best Fantasy books I've ever read.
Hiii! I recommended you read The Forest of Hands and Teeth. Its also post-apocliyptic. It is a young adult fiction book but I thought maybe you'd like it. :P
Hunger Games is A-MAZING!!! Suzanne Collins is a pure genius. I recently told my friends about the books, and in describing them, they were all "wow...you're really into twisted, macabre books!". needless to say, they were doubtful. but i got them to read the books, and BAM! the birth of a few more addicts =]
Julia i totally trust you on movies and books because we share exactly the same thoughts on every single review you've done....so, i'll check them out :)))
First off, I'm not a big Stephen King fan. That said, those of you who liked The Road, may want to check out one of his most popular novels, The Stand. It's set in an end-of-days world where a rapidly mutating flu virus is accidentally released from a U.S. military facility and wipes out 99 and 44/100 percent of the world's population, thus setting the stage for an apocalyptic confrontation between Good and Evil.
I agree audiobook is an awesome solution for busy people. But I was dissapointed once with "The High Lord" (3rd book from "The Black Magician Trilogy"). I got the book, and I read it all of them, and then I tried the audiobook out of curiosity. The third book from the audiobook have missing chapter. Somehow the last chapter from the book was not in the audiobook.
For those of you living in the US, most local public libraries have available audiobooks via several types of media, i.e., cassette, CD and online downloads like Netlibrary and Overdrive.
Great Book Choices! "The Road" was actually made into a movie which starred Viggo Mortenson and Charlize Theron as the wife. She has a small part though. Great movie too...
I recently read Stieg Larsson' s trilogy recommended to me by a book store owner in Germany never knowing about its fame and I loved it. I love reading crime/ mystery fiction If you like that kind of fiction you won't regret it unless you've watched the movies already :)
@cailin000 I did see the movie of the first book, which was in Swedish with subtitles. I know that it is now being done in English here in the US, but it's hard for me to believe it will be better than the Swedish version. The girl who played Lizbeth was so totally believable in the role, I can't imagine her played by any actor I can think of here in the US. I'm looking forward to seeing he movie from the second book.

i love that series! as soon as my local library gets the mocking jay (3rd book) i'll be finished reading the series :( the last book in the universe is short and a good post apocalyptic type read, it's also a young adult (YA) novel. some other interesting YA sci fi: His Mortal Instruments series (spun off a new series: infernal instruments) and I am number four by pittacus lore. i hope you post more book recommendations!

I've also read The Road, but in Italian (i'm Italian). I LOVE it, but I'm scared about watching the film, i'm scared that might be wasted!

if you like post-apocalyptic books, you should read "i am legend." the book is infinitely better than the movie.

I am in love with them also. They are so good, about half way through Mockingjay. Wishing there was a number 4!

If you like post-apocalypse I recommend "The Stand" by Stephen King. Ist allerdings ein sehr dickes Buch.

Thanks for the tips. I can currently reading "Kiss the Girls" by James Patterson. Really intense thriller. Its excellent and exciting but also very disturbing. Definitely not a teen read. But I find the main bad guy fascinating for some reason.

Hey!
I read the ... In Germany they're called " Die Tribute von Panem" (like in Suitzerland?), too.
I love those books!
But I think the first book is much better, because the second one is kinda repetition of the story of the first...

@pyewacket60 Did you watch the movies too? They're AWESOME but not as good as the books:)
cailin000 1 year ago
@cailin000 I did see the movie of the first book, which was in Swedish with subtitles. I know that it is now being done in English here in the US, but it's hard for me to believe it will be better than the Swedish version. The girl who played Lizbeth was so totally believable in the role, I can't imagine her played by any actor I can think of here in the US. I'm looking forward to seeing he movie from the second book.

@pyewacket60 Well I agree about the actress but you should watch the three Swedish movies you can find them on torrent and you won't regret it :)
