yes, shovels do seem better to use than the 'gun' just watching "Chris" use that gun was making my legs ache! and I used to love doing stuff like that! (don't critticise me I have MSmy legs are weakened from my last relapse)
there is a small indentation in the sand called a 'show'. It can look like a small donut type hole or just a hole in the sand. Usually not bigger than a pencil in diameter. I learned a lot from asking fellow diggers. Good Luck!
the 'tube' item is called a clam gun-they can be made of plastic, or metal. Aluminum ones-like shown-are cheap and good. Stainless steel is the best but pricy. Plastic is cheap but weak. You can also use a clam shovel (narrow shovel head) or even an irrigation/trenching shovel. Lots of stores like Cabelas, Sportco, and as you get closer to where the clams are local sports/outdoors places will probably carry them. Licenses are available at mostly all above locations. The arguments about tube versus shovel are so silly. Use what you like and makes it more fun for you. I have bad knees and hate getting wet and sandy so I use a tube, even though it is slower and takes more effort.
i know people with the same problem, or back problems too, and they still use shovels...you just work around it, this guy that digs pushing the shovel in with his foot can get over 300 lbs in 4 hours
This is my boyfriend... yes us locals use shovels... not bad for a guy from Michigan though!
