the most amazing anatomical feature i have reflected upon recently is the trochlea for the superior oblique muscle in the eye...does anyone have something to say about that one.. comparative anatomy, embriology, origin and development in genus homo
Wear gloves! Who cares if he is dead or alive? You can just throw away a pair of gloves and you don't have to stink like formaldehyde. Not a pissing contest to see who can do the grossest thing. It doesn't matter if there isn't any potential to contract infectious disease, it's just easier to get off a layer of laytex.
I don't care if it's a human cadaver or not, anything covered with formaldehyde should only be touched with gloves and tools. That shit smells really bad.
@bluepen115 Actually the embalming process includes using chemicals that not only preserve the body, but disinfect and sanitize it as well. So, he is touching a clean or as you would call a "hygienic" specimen.
im going for massage therapy and i wash my hands about 3 times before i pick up a sandwhich just after massaging someone. I would have to eat with gloves and wash my hands with them on, and thats if i would even still want to eat after doing a disection...
heheheh my boyfriend has trouble with blood and guts, so he watched this video to try and get over it...his mother walked in an hour later and he was passed out on the floor :) idiot.
@nikkibotz Actually, it's not. Not for medical students, and I can speak being one. A lot of times, we have to 'feel' stuff, like differentiating a muscle tendon from a nerve, or a nerve from an artery. Or a prominent bone on the skin surface. Except for the bony parts maybe, gloves don't allow you to do that. You wouldn't want someone to ligate your muscle instead of your artery in a surgery would you?
I admit it does feel weird and 'disgusting' the initial few times. You get used to it! ;)
@shubhu2101 Gloves are worn during surgery. Or you mean you need to practice now without gloves to do surgery with them later? ... I think i'm catching on...lol
Do your hands not get irritated by whatever the bodies are preserved with? I wish I could watch one of these in person!
@nikkibotz I know it sounds weird, but every time one student hesitates to do dissection without gloves, our Principal's favorite words are: "What surgeon are you going to be if you're afraid or disgusted of learning from a cadaver. Trust me, it can't eat you?"
It's not so much as learning as it is of overcoming the fear as well. It might so happen you won't have gloves in some emergency someday. No, they don't. Because you wash your hands with disinfectants. Yes, it's a great experience indeed!
@nikkibotz I am currently a Cardiothoracic Surgeon finishing my residency and it is a very subjective topic. "Dead guy" is simply a soul-less human anatomy and is a beautiful creation of both He and evolution. It is technically sanitary due to the embalming fluids that they use which create a sanitary environment - this is why it doesn't rot due to bacterias and fungi. No one has ever contracted an infectious disease from a modern cadaver.
Just to make it clear: Professionals do it without latex.
(as far as it concerns anatomy).
If you wear gloves, you won't have the feeling, you need to make the difference beween artery, vene and nerve. If your cadaver is rather colorless, it's a big advantage, not to use gloves.
Not one of our Professors wears gloves, when dissecting.
Wearing gloves is, furthermore, not really hygienic...
Come on guys, get serious here. You know if people keep acting like kids regarding this kind of content, then youtube may decide that this content should not be made available on youtube any more. This is not "cool": this is "science".
@Audiofreund2 I'm 16 and I'm fine watching this, I look at it as an educational oppurtunity rather than a graphic dissection. hopefully the things i've learned here will help later in life.
I'm apperently a phycopath. And now it's confirmed: I'm still hungry after watching this and got increasingly hungry. Something must be wrong with me.
@Imakeitcool15 Nah. It just means you'd make a good worker in a morgue. You always see them chewing on a sandwich in the movies with a body right next to them.
The body is real, note that the face is covered so as to hide the
identity of the person. Surgeons only wear gloves in surgery so that they won't transfer an infection that might be on their hands into the patient. The gloves are for preventing the patient from getting an infection. Since the person being dissected is obviously dead, there is no need to wear gloves. Hope this helps.
@shandifox I agree that they should be wearing gloves for the reason you stated. Many of the very early anatomist who were doing dissections died from infections transferred to them from infected cadavers.
@shandifox The dissected bodies have been fixed with paraformaldehyde which has killed every single living organism and cell within the cadaver. If was anything in this world with no pathogens in it, it would be that cadaver.
I don't think you can get any if they died from natural causes. The whole purpose of dermal tissue is to keep such things OUTSIDE the body. I agree, gloves would be nice. But I'd say it's pretty safe - You're not touching any bacteria that you wouldn't be touching on the outside anyways. I dont think your donated body would be used for a first dissection for freshman doctors. If you died of an infectious disease, it'd most likely be used in research by higher ups in quarantined environments
@shandifox the body is probably embalmed. This means there is no risk of diseases being passed onto anyone touching the body. Therefore, no need for gloves.
@Jer942 But what about any bacteria/microorganisms/parasites that might be living in the cadaver? Do the chemicals for preservation ensure that 100% of any microorganisms are killed? lol I just would feel safer with gloves on. Btw I love the video and I greatly appreciate this.
The preservation methods used should keep the cadaver clean if it is taken care of properly. Bacteria might make observations inaccurate. I don't know much about human dissections as I am still in secondary school, but I assume that the preservation methods work well. It would show if the cadaver wasn't preserved well (discoloration). People can always wear gloves in a dissection if they want to, but cutting up a human is just like cutting up beef or pork, its just meat. Jer942.
The problem are not the cadaver's bacteria. The problem are the dissector's bacteria. the cadaver has been lying in Formalin for about three years. On your skin are much more bacteria and they won't kill you.
But there shouldn't be any bacteria or diseases assuming that the body was preserved properly. People only wear gloves if they have an open wound on their hand or if they are working on a real life patient to prevent infecting the patient while he's opened up during surgery. Believe me, there's nothing wrong about not wearing gloves during a dissection if you don't have a cut in your hand. Its practically just like cutting up a steak! ;)
@Jer942 But the person doing the dissection is still alive. If the cadaver is really really fresh, okay; but even then, most people die in hospitals/old people's homes where there's a lot of nasty bacteria around. In the days leading up to the death of a person, hygiene is reduced to the bare minimum because it's so exhausting for the patient. Since immunity is low in dying people, this leads to am even higher bacterial load on the person's skin. You don't want to touch that without gloves.
@janeyanna It's been trapped in formaldehye for years. Trust me, no bacteria that can be fatal to you would survive that. Plus, the person often watches his hand with disinfectant before and after doing the dissection. ;)
@RoughRiderElk That's because these bodies are often not from 'identified' persons. It's illegal in some countries and I don't really know how it works. But that's what one of our seniors told us.
I think he is wearing glove..but it is very transparent....and his hand is like as if flesh liquid is on his fingers but its on his gloves...I may be wrong..
Everybody shouting about gloves... The preservation process renders the body sterile so no infections can be acquired from it. I personally wouldn't want to dissect without gloves, but there are times when bits of body come into contact with your skin anyway (e.g. when reaching into a cavity, your wrist can touch the cavity wall) so if you dissect enough you might get over the squeamishness. You're already fiddling with a corpse and it gets on your skin anyway, so what difference do gloves make?

Everybody shouting about gloves... The preservation process renders the body sterile so no infections can be acquired from it. I personally wouldn't want to dissect without gloves, but there are times when bits of body come into contact with your skin anyway (e.g. when reaching into a cavity, your wrist can touch the cavity wall) so if you dissect enough you might get over the squeamishness. You're already fiddling with a corpse and it gets on your skin anyway, so what difference do gloves make?
