I went all psychoanalytical and came to a conclusion: In greek culture, it was acceptable to have a gay relationship, but it was not acceptable and very looked down upon for a man to take a receptive role, or be dominated. So here goes: Men are dominant and expect others to be the same-gay sex induces the thought of a man being dominated WHICH leads to the rejection of the gay relationship and a lack of respect. Not society, just human nature.
