  • Is this just an AR-15?

  • @Warbirdguy1

    sure, with custom parts

  • I just held one at my local guns shop in Florida and it was sweet.. Price was $1599.00

  • Ruger rifle does it nice despite the hard fieldstrip

  • Awesome Rifle. If i had known about this first i may have bought it instead of the sig

  • Good review man,, solid explanation on crucial points,, didn't blabber too much. good little review

  • Price ?

  • can you shoot or use conversion kit to shoot 308?

  • @Grawr93XD

no, the parts are all to small

  • @Grawr93XD just so you know they are now selling the SR-556 is 6.8spc. I almost went with it for the extra thump when I bought mine, but ultimately decided against adding yet another caliber ammo in to the mix.

  • wish they would also make a DI, also wish they would make there 1911 in a 10mm option

  • Had a Sig 556 Swat patrol. Loved the design and accuracy, hated the build quality. Front diopter sight fell a part. Stock fell a part. And the single crap mag it came with was a joke. One other thing is that it chewed up brass like nobodies business, so reloading was out of the question. Sold it and got a SR 556 and couldn't be happier. Very well built with awesome add ons. Who else ships a factory rifle with three pmags. Accuracy and reliability are excellent. Great rifle.

  • Hey good review man! Could you elaborate on the firing pin, what is bad about the old pin? I'm thinking about either getting one of these or a Red Jacket buit AK 74. What would you prefer and why?

  • it came with 3 pmags? that's alot better better than other companies....

  • is it free floted

  • Nice vid

  • IS THIS BETTER THAN THE SIG 516 AR PLEASE HELP ME

I DONT KNOW WHAT ONE TO BUY I KNOW THE SIG COMES WITH A CHEAP RED DOT AND THIS IS IRON

  • AR nuts are hating on the piston design. No one knows of anything bad about the AK firing system, but how many service member (I am a US Marine) hate their fucking M16/M4?! If the Marines gave me a blue pill (M4) and the red pill (AK), I'd take the red one for reliability. I understand the Piston design has a bad rep, but if they rifle isn't engineered for one, then it wont work. It's like dropping a HEMI V8 in a VW beetle. If Howard Hughes was here he'd say "It's the way of the future!"

  • IE: lower receiver lock, barrel nut design for consistent torque from the factory, bolt design, mag pul furniture, ambidextrous controls, and short stroke piston. At about 600-700 bucks cheaper

  • It's a decent looking rifle. I just bought the Sig 516 and it seems like Ruger pushed out a piston AR without doing anything different that a lot of guys are doing in their own garage. I do say it's nice that they are giving 3 PMags. Sig is only handing out 1 GI style mag (weak). Sig seemed to put more thought and design into theirs.

  • Abracadabra:

  • true thing about gas pistons is they're made for men...the rest keep complaining about the weigh

  • @Miwiz1 see my previous post. I agree with you. i dont find the weight an issue. but im 6'4" and 230 lbs.

  • now the gas tube isnt blocked by the front sight but has a fire selector chamber that uses gas to select its firing activity

  • I just had to send mine back to Ruger due to Carrier tilt destroying my buffer tube and shearing off the retaining pin on the tube. had it 8 months and approx 2K rounds through it. That REALLY bummed me out. Till then it had been my favorite AR platform. It was very easy to clean, faster then a DI gun. The issues that were posted under me I have not found. The reail system is superb with no fouling noted by me that I could not get to.

  • I wouldn't advise getting one. My friend has one and since you can't take off the rail you can't clean between the barrel and the lower rail where the gas is vented out. So you get a bunch of fowling on the barrel and on the bottom rail. The little hole under the piston block is only used when the piston is over gassed. He wishes he bought a P.O.F. rifle that is 2 times better than the SR 556 @ basically the same price.

  • @DellDude Just an FYI: I have a POF: P-308 and it is back to the factory a second time for stove piping and ejection issues.

  • Clean looking weapon

  • LMT Piston all the way!

  • @jha77jha77 adams arms for me love it too.

  • can you use a .223 rem in this gun

  • @Ipodman72

    yup

  • Carrier tilt? What are the chances, anyone?

  • I know one is piston and one is gas but which one would you buy the ruger sr556 or the M&P 15T? Or other if you prefer and why. I am lookin for a first AR

  • Compared to most ARs how heavy would you say this is?

  • @Mrcaffinebean

officially I think it would be categorized as "way heavier"

  • @GunWebsites That's what I thought,it just looks that way. I definitely wouldn't want a heavy AR.

  • @GunWebsites only slightly so from a DI gun

  • @GunWebsites i have a very similar build w an adams arms piston and C3 billet upper and lower with DD12.0fspm rail and a mid length gas system on a 16" centurion barrel, vltor emod, with buis G2 light, grip pod and trijicon 4x optics. it weighs in at 12 lbs with a full mag a 8 cr123's in the vltor. piston guns will get heavy if you start acessorizing them but if u are running a standard hand guard and a piston with iron sights it isnt bad at all, just ounces heavier than the equivalent DI gun.

  • @Mrcaffinebean

the piston and rail system probably add some weight, i imagine they further reduce the recoil

  • Nice gun, I have the SR556c and it rocks but this one is really nice as well, could be used for a small caliber Long Range AR. I think the un-fluted barrel although heavier is actually better because of the durability and accuracy. But for combat shooting and being able to engage multiple targets i prefer my SR556c simply because it is a lighter weapon.

  • i want it. lol

  • nice..its a badass gun, but 2k is a lil pricey.

  • Could you keep the lower and put a regular ar15 upper on it?

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • @panzerkilla

I would think yes, it is still your basic AR 15 lower should be compatible with any upper.

  • I ask this of anyone who has this gun and others like it( When compared with others like it is it worth the price of admission or are there better models out there?)

  • this or hk416?

  • i have a sr 556 also so far great gun my only problem i dont like how theres so much movement between the upper and lower reciever. paid 1600.00 think the gun would be more solid

    does yours have any movement?

  • thanks for replying back.

  • How bad is the recoil for a 223

  • @codebman

    very light

  • @codebman nill

  • @codebman i would equate it to a 7 year old hitting you and AR's have a recoil buffer so they kick like a .22

  • For the money, I would spend a few hundred more and go LMT or LWRC, I have fired one of these and although its a nice weapon, I think build quality could be a little better. It felt a little front heavy as well, maybe it was that rail system not too sure.

  • shot over 500 rounds with mine. great rifle and nothing wrong with my rifle. tight groups great buy

  • i got one for 1400

  • I don't think the forend is true free floating. Gas piston ARs are on the rise. Nice rifle havent been able to shoot one.

  • msrp 1995.99

  • @brandonewcomb

they don't cost that much in stores usually

  • @GunWebsites nothin ever goes for msrp but thats all i found i havent looked at one yet.any idea what they are selling for?

  • I've always liked my rugers, but was extremely disappointed with the build quality of the rifle. the front hand-guards don't match up with the upper receiver rail. roll pin install is cheap bullshit craftsmanship if you ask me. Save your money and go with an LWRC if you're set on a piston gun.

  • the only thing i could complain about is that ugly flash hider. nice rifle tho

  • That flash hider is butt ass ugly. The rifle is very well made. They do have the carrier tilt issues sometimes.

  • wats the damn price, nobody says it anymore, its a huge factor, jeez

  • @Kalashnikov4Eva

We are not a catalog. and we don't sell these

price is also different everywhere, all the time

The initial retail price is usually higher than some wholesalers will offer them, local shops will all have their own prices based on their costs, etc

Then after a while prices usually change

So whats the point of offering one price now when it will change as time goes on?

  • damn that thing is all kinds of sexy

  • I am stuck between this and the XCR. but eventually i will have them both so its just which one I wanna buy first haha

  • if you put sand on it will it jam

  • send me this rifle. PLEASE?!

i would give almost anything to have this weapon!!

  • 5.56 or 6.8

  • I've heard that this gun is difficult to field strip/clean. No matter what I hear, I still love Ruger, but is it as bad as some articles on the internet say?

  • @vman1223 Just FYI this gun is super easy to field strip/clean even easier than a DI AR 15 mine has been flawless through 1000+ rounds of green tip mil spec ammo

  • i live in holland now and i can buy guns but they are not what i want.if some1 like to make mony it must be possible to get it from the usa to here

  • you really wouldn't need a *safety for it* i'm left handed to and by the looks of it the ruger 556 has a brass deflector so you shouldn't really have any problems with it

i shoot just fine and don't catch any brass to the face.

  • So, does this give us all the advantages of an AR with the reliability of the AK??? That would be huge if true. Looking forward to responses.

  • @BfSkinnerPunk That's the theory behind it. One of the biggest complaints of the Colt M16\AR15 is the tiny gas tube. Debris can cause misfires and the hot gas causes wear and tear on the bolt assembly. Piston driven systems are waaaaay better.

  • Fuck i hate that i live in Canada. every thing with a barrel shorter than 18inchs is illegal... so pretty much all AR's. Fawk.

  • i like that rifle ,but after some thought i went with spring field m1a , after shoping around got for 100 less, cool rifle all though

  • Does anyone know what other grain ammo can be used with a 1:9 twist barrel? I've been thinking of using 62g and maybe a little heavier.

  • Any grain ammo can be used it is a

5.56mm rifle.Just don't use 5.56mm higher pressure ammo in a .223 remington only chambered rifle.

  • @mpc808 62gr and up. 55gr is supposedly "overstabilized" but I have no experience with it.

  • @mpc808 62g and less this rifle is 2 MOA at 100yd 72g it's a 3 or 4 MOA.

  • That's the problem, its 45 years old. 45 years ago we had no Viagra, look at technology now, RESISTEANCE IS FUTILE! lol

  • has anyone heard of SOG Armory AR15's?

  • SOG armory is here in houston, they're pretty pricey.

  • @steveeeeboi Well I've got one, honestly In the middle of retro fitting most of the stuff on it, obviously the parts that actually are made by SOG i'm not changing because they seem top notch to me. I don't really know much about the company really, I never hear about SOG Armory in the :AR 15 community", I felt like a leper. Finally someone knows something, do you know anything else about the company, track record? or anything interesting/useful?

  • I've visited their store front a few times, and as far as service and knowledge goes, they got it. As far as I know they do most of their work on site, you can see from the store front to their work area. And I've never heard any cons from them besides their prices. I know a few of the employees there are ex-military so I'm sure they know their stuff.

  • one could change this rifle to fit one's needs/perceptions right?

  • I own one and love it but the weight is a definite downside.

  • the bad thing about a piston ar it just moves all the heat and crude into a tiny little area(where the gas comes out to move the piston, and the gas block area is going to NEED more TLC! watch out for heat build up in this area!)

  • you mean .50 cal Barrett

  • @markssite Can you post a video of you shooting at that distance accurately enough to hit a person?

  • Your a dumbass. Failbot for sure.

  • Do yourself a favor and stick with the DI gas system that has been proven over 45 years. Buy Colt, Sabre Defense, CD Defense, LMT, or BCM.

  • what about the m&p by s.and w.

  • No. DI sucks with Suppressors and can't handle submersion. kthx.

  • thanks for the informative vid. Question: is the flash hider removable and is the barrel threaded for say a suppressor?

  • I was at the local gun store the other day. This is outselling any single AR model they have and it is outselling the Sig 556 by 3 to 1. Feedback on the SR556 has been all good.

  • only bad thing is that its not fully auto.

  • That is the good thing about it. When you aim, you actually hit.

  • im sure if it was fully auto you could hit your target if you practice enough.

  • The person isn't the problem its the barrel flex of a fully automatic weapon.

  • Im just glad I live in Ohio so I can get a HK mp5 or AR15. Great investment. They will always appreciate in value no matter what.

  • And it is a hell of a lot easier to get one.

I can buy one in Canada

  • pretty nice rifle. would be nicer if tighter barrel twists were available.

  • would anyone know if I can get a left handed safety for it???

  • not from Ruger that I am aware of, but it should be an easy mod

  • i know they have ambi safties.....

  • I just bought one. I love it.

  • Nice, hammer forged barrels.

  • Is this legal in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts? This thing is badass. I only wanna get this to put this on display, it is so precious.

  • Aren't these made in Massachusetts?

  • @GunWebsites

I do know that Sturm and Ruger is headquartered in Connecticut, and Springfield has the S&W headquarters. So, I guess that maybe it is possible to get one in MA. How about the AR-15?

  • You're right about the locations . you can get any new AR in MA as long as the stock is pinned so it doesn't move , it doesn't have a flash hider a welded muzzle brake instead , no bayonet lug on the front sight , and absolutely NO new 30 round magazines all magazines have to be made before the first " Assault weapons bans " from 1994

I bought my first AR a Bushmaster exactly as described

  • @GunWebsites

I was at a local gun shop and was looking at one of these, it said Ruger Inc. 411 Sunapee St Newport, New Hampshire. Funny it had the address on it.

  • The corporate headquarters is based in CONN but they have the plant in NH

  • couldnt have said it better scotti

  • @GunWebsites Jack Daniels is made in a dry county in Tennessee.

  • @GunWebsites prescott arizona i think

  • It's legal to own minus a collapsible butt-stock , which would have to be pinned in one position so it doesn't move and it would also have to have a welded muzzle-brake and NOT a flash-hider oh and no bayonet lug either , and forget the P-mags , illegal here in Mass unless you're law enforcement

  • why is the flash hider banned and the muzzle brake not? doesnt the muzzle brake reduce muzzle climb therefore making the rifle deadlier?

  • Because of moronic law makers who don't have a clue on what laws they're making. Like the other ' evil ' features like a bayonet lug , give me a break ..when's the last time you ever heard of anyone getting killed by a bayonet at the end of a AR15 owned by a civilian? never

These laws are passed by people who can't even tell you the difference between a muzzle brake and a flash hider but they're doing it for the safety of the kids ( rolls eyes )

  • besides, most rifle muzzle brakes act as flash hiders as well and the bayonet lug thing is idiotic :D i mean nobody would go rollin' to the range with a bayonet

  • I agree , these morons in office think they accomplished something.

  • I find that no collapsible stocks stupid. God forbid that gun get a few inches shorter.

  • The firing pin is the same as any other AR style pin.

  • torideabike. Where did you get the info about the HK 416 having problems ? I read where they where told to stop using the HK ,and use the M4 but nothing was said then about problems.

  • Looks good! I ordered mine and should have it on hand 2 days from now.

  • right on, let us know how you like it

    Have fun

  • HK416 has been running into some rather serious reliability and durability problems in the field as of late, including the piston system locking up in cold weather and the upper receiver cracking. HK-416 receiver-cracking issue has led to U.S. Special Operations personnel operating under SOCOM (USSOCOM) to switch out their HK416s with Colt M4A1 Carbines, so theyre now back to using direct-gas-impingement guns. I hope this gas piston thing really catches on so good old AR go down in price.

  • m4 cuts?

  • The AR15 has many variations of barrel.. one popular style (shape) now is the "M4 barrel profile" or "M4 Cut"

It's where the barrel gets narrow for an inch or so between the handguards and the muzzle

it is where the M-203 grenade launcher clamps to the barrel

  • I was talking about the deeper feed ramps in the barrel and the receiver. Maybe what I meant was A4... maybe I'm confused...

  • Doh.. sorry I'll have to look again.. I just had one apart yesterday too, didn't think to look for the M4 cuts inside the upper though

  • 1400 is what i payed. and i like it

  • God, these piston AR15's are getting so old. Firearm's manufacters today lack creativity.

  • dude you have to be kiding, there are only 3 frims that make piston uppers. its not getting old, DGI is getting old if any thing.

  • creativity? what would you call creative? How about the idea that piston AR's are just more durable? DI AR's are getting old.

  • Yeah they just might be better but we don't need any more piston AR's.

  • nutnfancy has made a video about DI and piston AR's and there are som pros and cons in both. i suggest you watch it. there are still good reasons to buy a DI AR

  • uh-huh... There are some good reasons sure. But I went with a LMT Defender 16 piston rifle. There are good reasons to go with a piston AR.

  • of course, there are many good reasons to get a piston AR the vid also points out those reasons. i just say that DI isnt out dated. unfortunately i have no practical experience. the gun laws in europe only appeals to old school hunters

  • I agree, we'll never have another john m browning, or eugene stoner.

  • Alot of firearms made today are nothing more then just variations off of those creator's designs.

  • Yea, they need to make something new. lol

  • You cant put lipstic on a ar-15 to make it a SIG556

  • what do you mean by that? are sigs the best rifle in the world? they sure are not good looking

  • I know. read my comment again....You can't modify a AR-15 with a gas piston to make it as reliable as a SIG556. I owed 3 ar-15 and they all malfunctioned. I own a sig556 and I will never go back.

  • with all of these AR15s, if they're built to the MIL spec, they're the same weapon. They all source components from each other and pretty much build a weapon to sell with parts from the lowest bidder. With the exception of the "teir 1" AR variants, HK LWRC et al, they make everything in their gun and guarentee it. Hence the cost. You can build your own AR and really peak its performance once you have confidense in the makers of its individual parts, and there's lots of em.

  • YEP! that's why I went LMT!

  • I want this gun, but you can get a new AR for a lot cheaper. The NRA said it was a very high end gun, and that it was worth every penny you spend on it, it is about 2000 bucks. If it is made by ruger, you got yourself a damn good fire arm.

  • whats your take on this, I just want to make sure I didnt make a mistake not going with the DI system.

    thanks, Keenan

  • story is still out IMO

I like it and I want to recommend it, but I just haven't heard enough reports one way or the other

I know it doesn't suck, but beyond that I can't yet say how 'good' it really is

Anytime you buy something new to the market there is a risk..

  • Hey man thanks for the great vid, I've talked to you before about an lwrc that I was payin off and with some stuff thats come up I ran out of funds so i went with this ruger and I should be getting it soon. I wanted to ask the opinion of someone that has experience with a piston AR cause ive only gotten to shoot a trad. DI system. I've heard that these piston guns having more kick than a standard DI system AR, still get dirty, and have reliability issues..

  • I think the charging handle is decent on its own... going to upgrade to a gas buster for sure... the only thing I think is the problem now is the selector switch.. no where near the "crispness" as my M4 with the military.. any ideas on how to tighten this up?

  • I guess a stronger spring on the detent.. but I'm not sure

  • I noticed the same thing about the selector. It just doesnt snap in place like most AR's.

  • oh cool, its got a mini-14 flash hider on it

  • Just bought, very sturdy weapon besides being a bit on the heavy side, the only thing I don't like is a flimsy charging handle. When using the non firing hand to do one handed charging, it can bind with the side wall of the channel. Other than that, a fantastic weapon and factory setup.

  • interesting, I didn't notice that about the charging handle, thanks for the heads up

  • I live in Tucson what gun store are you doing these videos at?

  • 3 gun shops here in town support us; Tucson Guns, Diamondback and the Armory

We do the videos all over the place (where ever we can)

  • GunWebsites, I have both love both. Ruger is heavier, but they both shoot accuratley

  • thanks for the feedback, good to hear firsthand from an owner

  • Dude, where did you get that? I can't find it anywhere.

  • the Ruger 556or the DanD M4?

  • The Ruger 556.

  • The local shop here in Tucson where we get some of our footage has two right now I think

  • How much did you pay for it?

  • best gun for ur money is a daniel defense m4...got mine for about 1400

  • Well it's supposed to be reliable and accurate. Unless someone can name me another reliable and accurate rifle, I'll probably end up ordering this.

  • I have nothing invested in what you buy, but I would recommend you look into LWRC also.

Their gas piston system is test and works.. others tend to fail under extreme use

I have no idea how Ruger's will perform since it's brand new

  • True. And I'll look into it. Thanks..

  • I read that during testing at Ruger, 20000rds were fired with no issues with the GPS. LWRC is nearly half again as expensive as the SR556.

  • not sure about this new system but I can tell you that I just bought a Rock River ar 15 and freakin love it!!! did my research, got a good price and it is very nice.

This sr556 comes with some nice perks like the grip, handguard, 3 nice mags, flip up sights...makes it worth the $1500 4sure. I just dont know how well a piston system holds up on an ar15. If you buy it, let me know what you think. Might be my next gun. goodluck

  • oh...also love the two stage trigger job RRA does. Some people talk about these types of triggers misfiring but I feel that you would really have to slam the sucker and have the saftey off...even then not so sure it would misfire....the one down fall is the sucky case it comes in lol
