Daniel if you knew what your capable of, well we wouldt had have you like we do now. You my friend are an amazing singer songwriter and my inspiration
For those who would like to hear some excellent and colorful interpretations of Daniel Johnston's songs I heartily recommend Kathy McCarty's "Dead Dog's Eyeball." Her powerful, straight-arrow singing and imaginative band arrangements fully flesh-out Johnston's songs, not altering a note of the great melodies. For those haters, or those just "on the fence" about his shaky voice and extreme low-fi approach, trust me on this.
I think DJ is Basass. I like that there are people who do not get it. It's art, not something to go with draperies like a decoration. We have plenty of that to go around. But rarely do folks come along that challenge conventional assumptions and speak to the soul. There is substance in DJ, even if the aesthetic can sometimes be challenging for the masses. But to not see the beauty in his music is to miss it completely. No ambiguity here, which is utterly refreshing.
i didnt know anything about him or his mentallity i heard his song on the movie KIDS and liked it .. i guess it all depends on your perception on what talent is... i appreciate all types of art especially the ones that are less common or go unnoticed its rare like a gem amongst gravel which is easier to accept because we walk upon it everyday....

Just when I was feeling disillusioned about finding someone special in my life, and now coming back to this song, Daniel's really making me think differently about it. =) Thanks Daniel Johnston. =) For your heartfelt songwriting.
One of my favourite ever songs, i love this man. And very true @satanjams, i've shown his music to a couple of people and they've hated it. But i love it. So ill keep on listening :D
I learned this song from the Spectrum cover several years ago, and it is my favorite Daniel Johnson song, but I'm so glad that the cover led me to the man himself. and the man himself is something else.
I THINK HES BADASS..ITS ALMOST LIKE HE CAN BARELY PLAY GUITAR AND IT SEEMS HE 4GETS THE SONG LYRICS DURING BUT REMEMBERS EM AT THE RITE EXACT MOMENT...IF THAT MADE SENSE
@skok1313 the medication that he is on makes it hard for him to remember his lyrics. most of the time he has a podium in front of him with the lyrics to his songs on it. quite sad.
people shouldn't watch things they don't like. I mean, why do people watch vids on you tube just so they can post comments that are mean and discouraging. I mean, I like Daniel Johnston, that is why I watched this video. If you don't like it, don't hurt yourself anymore by watching this stuff.
Daniel Johnston is Bipolar. Which is a very different condition than Schizophrenia. Often the two are confused but they don't go hand in hand. I've never heard any information about DJ being Schizophrenic as well. Where did you hear this? It's definitely not in any of the articles I've read or in the movie.
@sovisky Bipolar can advance and morph into a much more schizoid type of mental illness if gone unmediated or if aggravated by drug use, Daniel was known to take a good amount of mind altering drugs that very well could have influenced the onset of a much more debilitating illness.
I think the reason Daniel Johnston can make such awesome songs with out using much technique is because he is using his true emotions. He isn't trying he is just making.
i think you can pay out however much you want. but this is the only song that manages to make me happy in the worst of times, when nothing else will, and that, to me, shows just how talented he is.
quite definitively folk music. he's always playing his tunes in different ways, switching things up and making re-writes. goooood stuff from mr. johnston over the years
his music is not for everyone, no daniel johnston fan would say that it is. he obviously has his own type of person he appeals to. Which, happens to be me right now, i fucking love this guy
@satanjams As a daniel johnston fan I would say that his music is for everyone! Every single person needs to listen to him whether they think they like it or not!

Well feel free to go back to your Kanye and Diddy. He's an underground artist and if you weren't so shallow and would listen to the lyrics and the heart with which he plays, you may understand it. In reality, you're just too dense. Sad.

no. in reality, i have ears. he sounds like shit. you can paint it however you like, you can say whatever you like about mental illness and blah-blah. you can also pour syrup on shit all day long, but that don't make it pancakes.
He's an independent musician. He's not a studio musician. I guess you seriously don't understand that. "People" like you raised on Tool and Britney Spears really have no place criticizing anyone. At any rate his music was about his own personal expression, not pleasing "people" like you who don't respect depth and meaning. Sick, sad and disgusting.
music is more than how it sounds if you disagree you don't understand what music really is its not just how it sounds and if you don't like daniel johnston than get the fuck off his youtube video
how can you possibly say that because his music doesn't appeal to you that it is all around shit? thats just downright ignorant, and if you can't see the magic that we are all speaking of in this individuals music, but can find it somewhere in a puddle of mudd video then i need say no more
I loved DJ music for years now. I agree on what you have to say. Except that comment on "Tool". They are not what you may think. Listen to their lyrics and who their influences are. You might in joy it, in fact you'll love it. I'm not trying to offend.
Any1 ever thought he went crazy cause of laurie?????????????????????? because there is nothing worse than when misery and love mixed, in satanic rituals it is the theme for summoning spirits maybe he took it to the next lvl.
He is schizophrenic. That doesn't happen because of another person, it's internal. He never did any satanic rituals, he was overly religious. He did some drugs which didn't help but he's on new meds now and is doing very well.
Yes; it wasn't that he was obsessed with Satan in support. He was obsessed with defeating evil and his belief was that evil in the world was essentially at the point of rising to the apocalypse, and he was the only one who could warn us, usually via his art.
No, he's not schizophrenic. He's also not overly religiuos, but he came from a strict conservative christian family, and many times delusions revolve around satan, Jesus, angels, etc. He is not alone in his obsession with the devil when it comes to mental health patients.
He certainly WAS/IS a schizophrenic (pranoid type). You're kidding right? He was diagnosed with schizophrenia and had paranoid and religious delusions. Sorry, but you have no clue what you are talking about. He has it under control now with the help of anti psychotic meds. He goes to church regularly and yes he did come from a strict religious background. Please do seom research before you post. Not schizophrenic?? What an embarrassment.
Uh, what kind of debate is this? I have no clue? You know nothing about me.
If you watch the film, you will not hear one mention of schizophrenia throughout. You hear several mentions of manic depression, even DJ reads a section of some sort of textbook or medical book that details his symptoms--not one of them mentions paranoia, schizophrenia or any of the schizoid disorders.
Also, it is made mention several times throughout the film that though he attends church with his family, that he doesn't buy into their particular brand of conservative religion. It is very common for people who suffer from delusions to focus on religious imagery--and from what is known about his upbringing, such topics were often mentioned in his home.
Are you going to come back with a reasoned reply, or more abuse?
He is bipolar with psychotic features. Manic depression is the old name for what is now called bipolar disorder. Modern meds have helped stabilize him.
