I love Antonio, but his accent is just...too blatantly Spanish for Guido, I think. And he's just too cute...I know, there's the whole "Projecting to the audiance live performance nyahhh" thing he has to contend with...but I tihnk DDL did it a little more convincingly, just because he is a little older and plays the whole tortured artistic soul perhaps better than our dear Zorro... but, just an opinion....
Well I actually really like the movie and Daniel as Guido. Some of the actresses were disappointing but I liked him. However, I love Antonio in anything he does! He could have definitely been Guido in the movie.
thank god i'm not the only one who thought the movie was terrible!!! Rob marshal 10 out of 10 for Chicago. Zero out of 10 fro 9. it just didn't work. What happened to the plot?
@carwyncymru in regards to your comments about, plot, well the musical actually has less of a plot than the movie, and the original movie, which the play is based on, even less of a plot. Is a film called 8 1/2 by the great italian filmmaker, FELLINI. the mistake with the movie NINE, in my opinion, was that they tried too hard to make it a more conventional film but without really going all the way, It felt like they didn'nt know if they wanted an artistic film or just another fun musical.
well javier bardem was first choice, and he'd have been just perfect. i don't think the film would have been as negatively received with bardem because there'd have been more charisma and likability to guido.
I still dont understand people talking that DDL is better Guido. First of all Guido must be attractive. He has like 6 women in addition except mother and wife. In movie, I did not feel SUCH ATTRACTION, CHARM or charisma like Antonio. Guido is a bit horny, very attractive, charismatic and artistic man. Like Fellini himself. DDL just looked like a man who is passing the middle-age-crisis.
@dkstmqeee Charm and attraction are a personal opinion. Because I found DDL completely handsome and gorgeous in the movie. He was that extremely charming Italian man who can get any age of a woman to fall for him. That's the charm of Italian Men. Just because you preferred AB, there were those who truly believed DDL was amazing and gorgeous. He played the Italian Man a lot better than Antionio. I kept forgetting it was DDL, he encaptured all the Italian men I became friends with in Italy.
I saw this production in NY on Broadway and was blown away by the entire cast. Especially Antonio's ability to make you feel for his character. I didn't see the movie because he wasn't in it. I would gladly see his performance again and again!
Raoul Julia is simply the best in this role and song. Daniel Day Lewis, I respect for trying and gave a great performance. But, NOT a singer. It is called a MUSICAL.
Antonio is a great actor, and has an amazing voice. I believe that he has the perfect characteristics for the role in the movie, but the movie lacks charm. Antonio, just wasn't very good at lip syncing here. Oh, well he's still amazingly hot, and really talented.
Antonio Banderas has a lot of charm here , which the role requires and which Daniel Day Lewis totally lacks in the movie Nine. DDL tries so hard but is so unappealing -- remember that Marcello Mastroianni is the original.
@jacobsimon DDL is so cute and sexy when he's singing this song in "Nine" ! He's perfect in Guido's skin ! But I'm surprised, Antonio is very good and sexy in this video.
Agree. This character is supposed to be based on Italian Filmmaker Federico Fellini...thus a Latin-looking actor should be best fit to play him..Raul Julia did it first, and now Antonio Banderas..why did they chose Daniel Day-Lewis for this part??? could not they get Antonio again? or Javier Bardem? or Andy Garcia? or even ME (hahahaha)?? come on! our Icons are always taken by Anglo actors (Madonna took Evita, Robert "Twilight" Patterson took Salvador Dali, Day-Lewis took Guido). Not fair.
....May I remind you that Italians ARE Anglo? I agree, it is concerning that Day-Lewis affects a better accent than Banderas, but hey, that's Banderas' problem. Day-Lewis' incredible ability to physically transform made him able to fit the mould of Guido absolutely perfectly.
I'm not going to comment on the others, but Fellini is NOT a Latin icon. I would have to guess that your being presumptiously overpatriotic, and that you may want to reconsider your argument.
@carlosantonioleon Oh I saw an interview, him, Antonio talking about the movie Nine. Well actually they asked to Antonio to take the role, but He told that he didnt want to take it cause he likes Nine on stage not as movie. Well I totally agree about DDL's Guido is incompleted.
@carlosantonioleon antonio banderas, andy garcia, and javier bardem are white moron. they are of european descent. there is no such thing as latin looking. daniel day lewis has very dark hair like antonio so shut it
Daniel Day Lewis will always be de god of actuation, he is a better Guido than the stupid Banderas, Banderas should only dedicate to make Rodriguez's films.
Daniel Day Lewis is great, but it's obvious that is not the same a film that a play. The way you have to act is very different, and I think Banderas y fasntastic here.
Antonio Banderas did a phenomenal job at standing out in this show. And, considering the talent, Mary Stuart Masterson, Chita Rivera, Jane Krakowski, Laura Benanti, and Mary Beth Peil, that says a lot about him.
I was lucky enough to see Antonio Banderas in this role on Broadway, and it was almost as if the part had been written with him in mind. What a seriously underrated bundle of talent this beautiful man is! When I heard the film version would star Daniel Day Lewis of all people, I thought I had surely misunderstood. I for one will never see this film. I've seen the best version . . . why mess with perfection???
If you didn't know Antonio could sing, you should check out the Andrew Lloyd Webber birthday celebration at Albert Hall - He does Phantom and music from Eva (also did it in the movie). He should have had the Phantom role in the movie.
I don't think we should put stage musicals and movie musicals into the same category. They seem to both have taken their own thing. Like how both productions of Sweeney Todd were good in different ways.
sure... cause how many times have you seen the movie to compare? and many of the actors in the movie by the way are classically trained stage actors... you fail at life
Just to let you know that she is more trained than a lot of Broadway actors since she was a kid. Do research before making there comments because they make you sound very ignorant. Like you dont know what you are talking about.
Boy are you going to eat crow. You can go on You Tube now and Cruz is magnficient. I saw both Broadway productions and both ladies were great but Cruz will have audiences panting. Her singing is very impressive to say the least.
i played in NINE when it was in Berlin at the Theater des Westens in 1999. It was one of the best productions I know... unfortunately there are too little movies on youtube.

The show has the worst lyrics I've ever heard. The movie was terrible except for Kate's very Ann-Margaret-esque dance number & Fergie stole the show.
