Balmung was voiced by one person for Infection and replaced by Crispin Freeman for the next three. When you speak to him, his "How are you fairing?" line is a relic of the original actor. And while some scenes seem like it could just be one guy with slightly different inflection, the majority of the acting sounds vastly different between Infection and Mutation.
Also, a number of scenes earlier in the game, aren't acted as well for most characters, as later scenes. Rachel is likely an example.
I'll say that for anyone who wants to do live commentary. If you have ADHD (Attention Dephesite Hyperactive Disorder), you will fail because every little pixel on the screen will make you zone out! I know, because I have it! I've tried live commentary on stuff I didn't even have to play and I still lost my train of thought every 3 and a half seconds! However, if you use the Hyperactivity of the disorder, you can make the commentary hilarious, so it's got pros and cons just like normal.
@NakaTeleeli My guess is that it is the same American actress, but the pronunciation of the spells are precise to a point that a different accent won't be as obvious. I think it sounds like the same person though. Of course, the extent of my .hack knowledge comes from this LP and watching Sign, so you're probably more right than I. ;)
According to the .hack// wiki, there's nothing to indicate Rachel's Japanese audio track is used during her attacks or that there is more than one English VA (Julie Anne Taylor). It also says Julie was born in California and that does sound like a New Yorker accent she's trying to pull off. Odd. Rachel's Japanese VA Aya Hisakawa is Osakan and they usually use southern (American) or English actors to imitate that accent.
As for the "LPer's Curse", I can think of a few prolific people who are immune. HC Bailly jumps to mind, whether the game is an RPG or an Action game, he can always fill it with information and normally share a few humorous anecdotes. He's a guy who likes complete dominance of his games though so there are rarely surprises in the actual gameplay itself. His reactions to dialogue and the like are top notch. The other fellow is Archael7, who has done only a few games. Though you're pretty good too
Oh, I see. That's why you project everything you do in important battles "Ancestral soul on me, rip maen on Mistral" etc.
Interesting, "Rachel gave Ressurect." The item name is correct, but here there's apparently a typo. I wonder if you could just warp out of the dungeon when it hits that phase of the ..quest?
I think the 'Let's Play' curse is more interesting to watch. Especially the reactions given once finding out they've either 1. did something wrong due to loss of attention or 2. nearly died from a similar reason. Out of all the videos I've seen of yours Naka, this one and the last two phase battles give me the most kick. xD
It certainly has its gives and takes. I prefer live myself, but some people find it easier to concentrate on the game, then write up a script. It's different skillsets. Live requires thinking on your feet. Post requires a really good ability to act.
I agree with you about the concentration deal. Thankfully my recorder has a timer on it, and I'm basicly playing to save stations so I dont' have to worry to much about length.
Unfortunatly, my inability to get a coherent thought out makes up for it. Any tips, if I may ask?
If you'll notice I'm quite bad at getting out coherent thoughts myself. Any number of times I've been interrupted then forgotten I was saying something at all, and can't do things as simple as go through a menu without stopping my thought. If you really want to say something though, and know you'll get sidetracked, I suggest leaving that part of the recording with no commentary, then saying the line in post and editing them together. I've done that on rare occasion.
Thanks, I'll consider that. Also, I haven't noticed any examples of you doing that, and I've never seen you stumble on your words, atlest not as bad as me anyway.
I like to think I'm a half decent actor. I do what I can so that it isn't obviously post. In fact, due to a recording mess up, one of my Katamari Damacy videos was almost entirely post commentary, and nobody's called me on it yet.
Ahh well, like I mentioned before, it's much more interesting when it isn't a perfect-perfect run. :p Like Tool-Assists, they're more for watching just to purely watch a game more or less 'beat itself' than listen to commentary and watch it as entertainment. On the opposite side, faked poor-gaming to create drama can sometimes be a little annoying.
Also, even if Naka noticed Tarvos' Protect Break right when it first happened, he might not have been able to do anything about it since Kite got Data Drained right then and there. I'd consider that just plain bad luck, rather than a case of not paying attention.

Take the items and run, no sweat if you get hunted down!
I feel you Naka, a lot of the stuff you say, though a third of it can be trivial, keeps the vids entertaining, yet you gotta focus on the gameplay.

the LPers curse probably hits harder than usual in IMOQ, seeing just how DAMN SADISTIC IMOQ can be.

When offscreening, do/did you do commentary even when you knew you were gonna cut it out?

"I'm Rachel, I have a highly regionalized accent! I'm a greasy buisnesswoman!"
I just couldn't bring myself to actually do any of her quests after meeting her. The dialogue would have been too painful.

he barley uses Rachel anyway. He only uses her if needed like this dungeon. He HAD to bring Rachel for the quest itself
