It may be legal, but what about the ethics of ruining a crab hole; an important part of a crab's life cycle? Crabs repeatedly use holes like those to mault/shed shells. Digging them out like that destroys the hole, and unstabilises the salt cooch banks. Erosion is next; and one less hole for crabs to mault in. And no, they don't just dig a new hole overnight. Some holes get used for half a century!

Since making this video I've learnt something: only male mudcrabs make burrows. However, females are prone to entering these burrows and on occasion there may be more than one female present in a males burrow. This video was filmed near mangroves abvove the high-tide mark and not on a soccer field!

Jeez guys, the poor bloody thing is barely legal! If you are catching muddies please only keep the big ones and always let the females go. We catch in Sydney, never before mid november (poor things are starving as they have eaten their muscles while hibernating over winter) and let anything less than 1kg go. Legal size is way, way too small. They are the last thing we want fished out!!!

And for below, yes they could probably take a hand off - if they are a decent size.

i have crabbed in qld for the last 12 years, used to be good but flat out getn a feed from the bay now due to fukhead pro crabbers, i do my best to fuk em up and move their pots the scums, they do more damage than good not to mention the size they take and nippers off jennys. great up north though.

@anthonycv8z i think the reason why you can take females in nsw is because fisheries could hardly ever find, nor heard about a female with eggs in nsw. they are about but not much. so i figure they didnt see a reason to ban the taking of jennys. we wouldnt need to go to qld to get a crab. can buy yours for 30 bucks a kg here and i am sure that females are sent all over in qlds poor catch years. temp is reason why you guys have more and grow faster. we are at the lower range.

I've looked into the legality of this, and as far as I can tell there is no law that deals with catching crabs this way. Hooking them however is illegal as this method often kills the crab and it's an offence here in QLD to take females. With this method we're using, if we unearth a female all we do is move it along the burrow a little and carefully replace the dirt back into the hole.

First we look for a crab burrow, and select one with the biggest entry hole. We then insert a wire rod down the burrow to feel around for a crab. You'll know when there's a crab there as the rod will strike a hard object, much like a rock. Sometimes the crab will move or grab the wire which guarantees there's one down there. Next, we pull out the wire and see how far along the burrow the crab is (they burrow horizontally) and then (carefully) dig at that particular spot to intersect the crab.
