I wonder if perhaps, because there are societies with horrible crime rates and no gun rights, and some with great crime rates and gun rights, maybe it is the fact that many societies are taught that it is weak to be emotional? And in nations where guns are owned more by criminals, people are less likely to worry about the consequences of using guns for crimes. Including violent ones.

Problem is, familiarality with anything intimidating is the best way to overcome it. I'll admit I had a recent fear of dogs to some degree. I volunteered at a animal shelter, and to say the least, it's pretty much evaporated. I grew up afraid of everything, even guns. Grow familiar with what scares you, and you won't be afraid.

If humans need government (and that's of course, debatable) it should be here to protect us from actual, quantifiable evil at home and abroad, not be some sort of moral compass as to how we should live our lives. @geromino2007 Actually it is quite accurate. In America guns have been banned many times, and every time they are banned violent crimes go up as well as crimes in general. In Finland, millions own guns, and they have one of the lowest homicide rates in the world. In 2006 for example they had 17 homicides by guns.
Not to mention the higher damage you are talking about if its in shootings is often done in a place where guns are banned/prohibited. They take place in areas where guns arent alowed.
@fwahoovaghad Of course, i cannot say much about US society, but i am citizen of Finland (now living in UK). Guns are not that popular. I know just one friend who has gun hooby. Another one is hunter. I haven't heard any news in Finland that guns were used succesfully to prevent crimes (police being exception). The whole finnish mentality is "self prererved" and passive, maybe that's one of the reasons people don't start shooting around when there is problem.

Just last night a woman killed one of two men who came into her home with a 12 inch knife that came after her, but i'm certainly not going to say "knives" kill people. Except for Switzerland, which has high gun ownership (due to mandatory military) but a low murder rate, just about all other countries show a direct correlation between gun ownership and murder rate (all murders including knives). You may not like it but more guns = higher murder rate. That's a statistical fact.
@fyte4it, first, I got the list of gun ownership by country from the "Small Arms Survey 2007". Then I got the murder rate per capita by country from Nationmaster. I don't make stuff up, I always check the facts unlike most people. As for not owning a gun if I don't want to, it's a little bit like being a non-smoker in a roomful of smokers and being told not to breathe the air if I don't want to inhale second-hand smoke.

If you believe big government is the enemy and that the government is taking away your guns (which you think is single greatest freedom), then you are far more likely to attack those taking away your freedom. I agree alot of gun shootings are due to poverty. But very few of the gun owning right want to address poverty or education.

There's plenty of studies showing gun ownership does not prevent murders. Most murders are caused by someone you know, so you trust them or don't see them as a potential threat. Gun control does cut gun death by an enormous amount. But people in america want to keep their guns no matter how many people die because of this. And that is their choice. But personally I'm glad i live somewhere with gun control and only 40 gun deaths each year.

Problem is, familiarality with anything intimidating is the best way to overcome it. I'll admit I had a recent fear of dogs to some degree. I volunteered at a animal shelter, and to say the least, it's pretty much evaporated. I grew up afraid of everything, even guns. Grow familiar with what scares you, and you won't be afraid.

A strange note is that, it seems most of these crimes are gang/drug related. Which means that you ban guns, and by some miracle they disappear off the streets then they go to other weapons. @geromino2007 Actually it is quite accurate. In America guns have been banned many times, and every time they are banned violent crimes go up as well as crimes in general. In Finland, millions own guns, and they have one of the lowest homicide rates in the world. In 2006 for example they had 17 homicides by guns.
Not to mention the higher damage you are talking about if its in shootings is often done in a place where guns are banned/prohibited. They take place in areas where guns arent alowed.

@fwahoovaghad Of course, i cannot say much about US society, but i am citizen of Finland (now living in UK). Guns are not that popular. I know just one friend who has gun hooby. Another one is hunter. I haven't heard any news in Finland that guns were used succesfully to prevent crimes (police being exception). The whole finnish mentality is "self prererved" and passive, maybe that's one of the reasons people don't start shooting around when there is problem.

@geromino2007 The fear isn't the responsibility of the gun. It is the fact that you were not taught that guns were there to defend you. As a child, I feared guns. (Because of the loud noise, no less.) Then as I grew up, I began to realise they can do nothing you don't tell them to.

Except for Switzerland, which has high gun ownership (due to mandatory military) but a low murder rate, just about all other countries show a direct correlation between gun ownership and murder rate (all murders including knives). I don't make stuff up, I always check the facts unlike most people. If you believe big government is the enemy and that the government is taking away your guns (which you think is single greatest freedom), then you are far more likely to attack those taking away your freedom. I agree alot of gun shootings are due to poverty. But very few of the gun owning right want to address poverty or education.

@Fonzymazer I didn't say they never happen in other countries. But in America you have several happening every year. Far more than any other country. There's plenty of studies showing gun ownership does not prevent murders. Most murders are caused by someone you know, so you trust them or don't see them as a potential threat. I would recommend the government study showing how women ownership of guns did not reduce likelihood of getting raped. gun owner is high, gun violence is not low but high

It is highly unlikely that a mass murder will be caused by a rock or a sword.. Those comparisons are ludicrous.

I'm on the fence whether or not it would be bad to have training- I mean you have it for driving cars and motorcycles
The Swiss have it as part of their curriculum- I think if it was setup so that like a car- you could buy it anytime, but if you want conceal carry license you should have maybe a training thing so that you can atleast prove your point and shoot ability

I think people are not thinking straight. If everyone had guns ideally you can stop crimes but guess would go up? Civil lawsuits because there aren't many laws that protect vigilantes from lawsuits. So if you shoot at him and hit the wrong person you are getting sued

Guns are rarely used in self defense. Most of the time, it is used in Domestic Arguments, Neighbor/Friend, Accidental Shootings & Suicides.
And even if you have a gun when an Intruder comes into your house, 9 out of 10 times, you don't have time to get to your gun fast enough.

Sure them being readily available for someone to illegally obtain is probably the main problem. But, most legal gun owners in America aren't crazy.
And also note, most gun related killings happen in big cities where guns are banned.
