These plaques will be a long term reminder to residents and visitors of the tragedy visited on New Orleans by the people responsible for the city's safety. The Corp of Engineers failed the people, and continues to deny responsibility for it failures. This plaque serves as a reminder to everyone.
It is sad to say in this day and age when the American Government subsudizes so many foreign countries that they havent taken care of the people devastated by this man made tragedy. 5 years + later and private individuals are having to contribute for this plaque. Tthere are many in the feds and ACOE that wish folks who want the TRUTH would just go away. But the media persist in telling untruths and still will not focus on the fact that 80% of the damages were done when the levees breached.
I wish I had been able to attend this unveiling. Friends lived in this community. Fortunately they are still friends but no longer live there. Such a terrible uprooting of history and family!
I was born in USA and lived here for 64 years. My father fought in WW2. I believed that our government would always protect its citizenry...until the New Orleans disaster. Now, years later, the people are still suffering while the government cowers behind a 1928 law and uses it to deny culpability. I am glad that my father is no longer here to see what the country he fought for has chosen to send billions of dollars to foreign countries, while ignoring their own citizens
I feel very much the same way. When I drove through my city after Katrina, I was THANKFUL my father, a WWII veteran and a man I adored, was not alive to see this. I did not want him to feel the pain I felt, that of a country that deserted its citizens.
I wept watching this. Both for the unnecessary loss of life and for the courage of the people of New Orleans to continue in the face of overwhelming odds, not only to rebuild their city, but to overcome the falsehoods put out by the media and the Army Corps of Engineers about them.
They say a lie can make it half way around the world while Truth is still putting on its shoes. They also say the Tortoise eventually beat the speedy Hare in the race. Thanks to Levee.org, the PEOPLE of New Orleans are winning and the truth about the levee failures - don't call it Katrina - is not only coming out, it's now cemented in public view where everyone can see it. The victims of this tragedy and their families deserve no less. Thank you levees.org
I'm very happy to see this finally come true for everyone back home. My dad lived in Gentilly and did not evacuate. He had to literally swim out of his home to 610 on Wednesday after the storm.

A beautiful way to remember what was needlessly lost. A constant reminder to remain vigilant so it doesn't happen again.
