Black powder does not impact-detonate, it needs a spark or ember to set it off. If that wasnt' the first shot he'd fired that day it was an ember left from a previous shot. If it was the first shot of the day, that was a very unusual accident indeed.
OK so the part where he pounds the shell back onto the *black powder* charge with that wooden cylinder... isn't there like a 30% chance that this "tapping" will impact-detonate the black powder? Blowing the wood ram like, through his shoulder or something hideous like that?
@Rep0007 Black powder is very sensitive to sparks and flame, but not to shock, pressure, impact, etc. It was used as the filler in explosive projectiles, even armor-piercing ones, for that reason.
Recently a man was seriously injured near where I live by tamping down blackpowder in a muzzleloader. The powder impact-detonated and sentt the ramrod into his shoulder.
I used to know a bloke with a smaller, but similar, cannon. He used it for livening up parties, and there were stories involving firing hand-fulls of Road-gravel at a feuding neighbour's house; when sufficiently inebriated . If it takes a weekend to make the (ingenious)projectiles , it must eat a heap of money at each outing...(?).
Hey there! One thing you must work on, imho. How come that great delay, in the end of your movie, when you "hit the target" and it very, really, slowly falls down? You should better use your video software. IMHO.
Did you find that the riflings would not stabilize the projectile pointy end first? Is the rate of twist too slow? I have a 30 MM gatling barrel I intend to do something similar with. It has gain twist rifling, but very fast, at the muzzle it is 22 1/2" per rev.
i find uselles to fire a bullet backwards.. less velocity=less energy=less stopping power+ reduced accuracy and the chance off blowing up the hole barrel... but that's just me
@DoctorHowitzer In the US and within that, Virginia, that particular item is not classified as a firearm, and the US BATFE regulations only apply to firearms, destructive devices, etc.
Great video, What is that multi barreled little weapon on the bench and do you have a video of it being fired? If not that should be your next one. I want a cannon!
@cannonmn How does one contact John to purchase a barrel section? Also, I assume experience taught that the projectile in unstable loaded pointy end first, is that right? I currently have a GAU-8 Avenger 30 MM barrel which I hope to turn into two muzzle loaders, or one ML and the other a pre 1898 Krupp replica. This is fascinating stuff indeed! Thanks for the video.
Yes it was, on table no. 2B5 where I was. We have a video out on that also, if you search for videos by "cannonmn" you will find it, or look for "firing the 32-barrel machine gun."
Why you have not fixed a back part of a cannon concerning a trunk? After all because of it there is no resistance to vertical return, and it could turn over)
Thanks, we understand perfectly. If you look again, we did fasten the cannon carriage to heavy sand bags in front of the stand, and those serve to restrain it from falling off the shooting stand. The carriage needs to be allowed to recoil a certain distance in order to preven the carriage from breaking. Recoil does not affect accuracy.
I try, try and try again, to post the best videos on old firearms, but nothing I post can compare to your canon videos, your are the best!! I love al of them!!!!
Yes, love old cannons and cannon models, salute cannons, line cannons, etc. etc. Please think of me if you find a cannon I might be able to buy or trade for.
I hope this is not a dumb question but were does the phrase "fire in the hole" originate from. Im sure I heard it used in a film "private ryan" Also Ed you use the phrase M 1 A 1 what does that mean. Just love your videos.
Fire in the hole probably originated when explosives were introduced to mining. It is a warning that a fuse has been lit or is about to be lit and anyone around should take cover.
M1A1 is just a cutsy way of giving a quasi-military name to anything, since the US military designates everything except air and water with "M_" numbers.
Shooting that cannon would make me feel better if all my hay had been rained on!

Ed does not, but John sells the 40mm barrel sections, minimum 40" length, weighs about 90 lbs., FOB 22150.
