The Rolls Royce 12.1 litre diesel engine was the best truck engine on the british roads in the 1980's. In the Leyland roadtrain, E.R.F or The Foden and the seddon atkinson all used the Rolls Royce 12.1 litre engine either as standard or as an option. The Roll royce 12.1 litre engine was rated with a few horse power setting of 265 bhp, 300 bhp, 325, bhp, 350 bhp , 375 bhp and a 400 bhp. In Japan they will pay top dollar just to have the honor of saying my truck engine is a Rolls Royce.
I used to do shunting and the yard gaffer put me in a T45. It was treated as the runt by the other lads who had new Volvo and a ERF mainly cos their heaters worked, but I liked the T45 the best. The engine had such a deep rumble and the power! It pulled trailers full of concrete staircases so much better then the rest. I'm still fond of Roadtrains, usually see them in Army convoys, and would love to restore one. I liked the horn on this video too as mine never worked! Cheers.
it originally had the rolls 265, this blew itself up and before I bought it was fitted with a brand new TL12. Still ahs the spicer box, not as bad to drive as people make out.
Oh and Craig50 take the pluinge, these beasts are getting rare over here as most made their way to foreign parts.
There is a Roadtrain in the yard where i work with a Rolls Royce engine,ex Dodds of Acton and i'm so tempted to take the plunge and buy it off the boss and get it restored, always loved them.
Ma first ever euro traction joby....was tramping in a T45! She was awfully slow on them hills up to San Sebastian....I'd be watching that temp rise & rise!Lol now....but brickin it back then.... Ahhh the gud old days!!!
The Roadtrain was often critiscised & it said the quality was bad , etc , but in reality it was very good. I used to drive on for several years ( what seems like years ago ) It was a 6x2 30-29. It was a superb truck , in all those years it never had any problems whatsoever and never broke down / let us down ( apart from regular servicing & brakes / tyres , etc that you expect to replace )Other suposedly better quality trucks (Scanias) gave a lot more trouble. Super underated trucks.
