@s0erd Well I would have to say having a species dissapear from the entire planet is a lot worse than it just dissapearing from the wild. There is no hope of bringing them back after that happens. Frankly we are not making much progress on saving many of the worlds endangered species. If we fail to save them then what ever effect's thier loss has on thier ecosystem is unavoidable. If it comes down to it I would preffer the use of this method to ensure a future solution could be found.
@redpandasrule IMO they should domesticate these things. From the looks of it, it doesn't seem like it'd be very difficult. I think many people would enjoy having one of these in their home and I think it'd be a great way to keep the species alive.

It's not a huge space, but I think it's ok for them. They also have a space inside to go to if they want to. This zoo has had a lot of red panda babies, so I think they get the chance to fool around. :P
They do actually have plenty of room, you're right. What they do too is when the babies get bigger there's another exhibit that they keep them in until they go to a different zoo. There won't be any new baby red pandas at the Erie Zoo for awhile, the red pandas we have now are retired from breeding. Their genes are pretty well represented now, but expect a new breeding pair before long. Also expect the orangutans to have a new baby in 2010, that's my guess at least.
i dont really agree with zoos in general, but this is just apauling! whos smart idea was it to put an animal encloser next to a main road anyway? chester zoo isnt bad, they have huge enclosures and its built away from main roads but with smaller roads leading in.
None of the enclosures are near main roads. This is an old zoo that has done a lot to improve the older exhibits. There is only so much money to go around.
i have fairly fast connection at home and super-fast connection at work! yet, half the time videos are interrupted about 100 times because of you tube's miserable bandtwith!
red panda's are amazing!! i went to the detriot zoo yesterday and i went to see the red oanda's but they werent out because the zoo just got a female for the male so they were trying to mate them. it made me sad to not see them but maybe next time i go there will be little babys running around!!

Probably not a good idea. They are endangered and you would need special permits. Taking care of one would be a lot different than a dog or a cat.

As for the Ailuridae family, Red Pandas are the only living member.
