So let me see - time of maximum electricity demand early = 07:00 - 12:00 on cold winter days - solar power efficiency 07:00-12:00 on cold winter days -zero. Yes that's just what we need for a sensible intergrated electricity generation spectrum - and we don't talk about the capital cost because when the sums don;t add up it's best to ignore them.
It's an interesting perspective but it'd be even better if you toned down the music and scrolled some stats like, how many panels, electrical production, etc.
This project is just a political dressing and has nothing to do with ecology or greeen energy.
Another big FAIL from scientificaly uneducated decision makers influenced by political lobies and business companies (architects in need for a project, solar panel makers, and building makers).
Building a tunnel just for tree safety? What a stupid and very expensive solution!
For the money, you could have cut the dangerous trees and plant many many many more tres in a safer place. Carbon balance sheet would have been far far far better!
As for the solar panels, it's a joke. It cost far more energy to build all materials and the tunnel that they will ever generate. Not to speak about the recycling which is everything but green.
@olahaye If you have land to spare, then yes, you are right. But this is Flanders, one of the most densely built up areas in the world. As a result, it is actually more cost effective to preserve the nature zones that still remain, because there is hardly any space left to plant extra trees. Buying up land to return it back to nature would cost much more over here than it would be to build a tunnel.
I wonder which one is "greener": to clear 10 meters of trees from the railway and plant a lot of trees for saved money or to build a tunnel with inefficient solar panels? How much was wasted just to manufacture all materials, no to mention construction expenses.
First of all, why was a tunnel of any kind even necessary? Was that structure built solely to support those photovoltaic panels? As a train passenger I'd rather be able to see outside.
Secondly, assuming that whole structure was built just for the sake of installing solar panels, how long before it generates "profit". More specifically, how long before those solar panels generate enough electricity to offset the energy used to manufacture the panels and construct the tunnel?
@rampagerick The tunnel was built to protect the train line from trees in the forest next to it falling on it. It was already there; they just added solar panels to the roof.
@rampagerick the structure was made to protect the train from falling trees. It's quite common for trees to break, potentially falling on the rails. The train that goes through that tunnel is a high speed train. Hitting a tree at 160km/h (100mph) would derail the train, block of the highway and probably kill most people on the train.
I don't think it is as bad as "Let the bodies hit the floor", "evanescence" or "009 soundsystem" that you hear on nearly all youtube videos. So quit complaining.
...And lo there will come a day, when all humankind shall see ecoprojects as hailing from common sense, and no longer shall there be a need to promote them with crass music. But until that day hold fast, for our ears are sorely tested.
Good video...

I think it's a waste a beautiful forest scenery. Why would they have to be in a tunnel if it'snot underground?
KnightMD 8 months ago
@KnightMD how do solar panels work underground? idiot...
brandp8787 8 months ago
@brandp8787 "they" refers to the passengers, idiot.
KnightMD 8 months ago
@KnightMD you mad? they're in a tunnel because the train runs on solar energy, solar panels don't work underground.

what happens when it snows?

The panels are only visible from the sky and produce enough power for 950 homes. far better than a dangerous nuclear and poluting coal. Great stuff.

Now that we've built this nice and ecological structure, let's get a HELICOPTER AND FLY THAT FUCKER AROUND TAKING SWEET ASS VIDEO OF IT!
