  • that is not the wind blowing my friends, that's a massive herd of meat rushing by!

  • anybody know the model of the PSE recurve? great vid by the way.

  • I heard Chuck Norris asked him for some advise on how to be more manly! ;)

  • Easy slip-up, not having a go at Dave in anyway - nothing but respect for the man:

But anyone wanting to do further research into what he said about the arrow flex etc. it's actually call the "archer's paradox" - not paradigm.

Again, love the videos, this set explained so much and gives great understanding and a great set of techniques to try and and develope into your own skills!

  • Is this the guy on dual survival?

  • @skcuf1 Yep, that's the guy! Dave Canterbury had been doing these videos a while before getting the Dual Survival gig. I think he like, over 500 videos now - all freely on youtube, cool huh?

  • Great Video Dave. I am a big fan of anything traditional. Especially Archery. There are various products out there that combat string slap. What you are needing are Limb-savers and brush buttons as well as silencers. I recommend 3 Rivers Archery. Limb-savers 10 bux, Brush buttons 2 bux.And if you make your own silencer as I do then thats free, Oh yes arrow rest quiets her down considerably... Hope this helps someone.

  • Thanks alot, I learned a whole lot!

  • this is always nice to watch and refer back to, thanks. Kenny

  • i ahve a PSE compound bow

  • The fluffy stuff makes it so the string is silent when u shot, it lowers the vibration making it silent.

  • Does anyone know what the furry things on the recurve bow string are for? is just to make it look cool?

  • @geekologieuser nvm i missed the explantion the first time through lol

  • As a professional Archer, do you still aim sighting the arrow? Or do you know what I call instinctive shooting?

  • Thanks Dave...

  • @aseglkj lol

  • cool

  • Thank you sir

  • hey dave thanks i live this clip also i love the duel survivle ware you lill the turkey big fan

  • hey dave thanks i live this clip

  • i turned on cc and got "very powerful recurb hoe"

  • Subbed :D btw I may sound as a newfag but... are you the guy from dual survival?

  • are all thos bows and arrows wooden

  • i dont know why poeple are really annoyed just a bit of wind and u can still ear just gotta listen harder cool vid man

  • I was eating while watching this! The wind starting blowing, my first thought, man that was a bad peice of pie

  • I think I heard the cure for cancer and the secret to eternal life somewhere in between those wind gusts.

Oh well, the world may never know.

I kid, thanks for those free, awesome instructional videos. Part number 4 is especially helpful.

  • Actually its ARCHER'S P-A-R-A-D-O-X. a paradigm is a subconcious way of thinking. "the Earth is here for man to exploit" for example. Also, a center shot or non center shot bow has absoloutely nothing to do with it being a recurve or longbow. There are examples of almost every type of bow that are either center or non center shot. Fine tune your terminology and theory before teaching others......also the archer should NEVER be conciously aware of the arrow...youll shoot high

  • What kind of long bow is that that is nice?

  • Great video! Thanks for all the information. I just bought my first bow yesterday (a Fred Bear Grizzly), and I'm on pins and needles for the weather to warm up so I can test drive it--until then, I'm soaking up information from instructors like you! I have a question though...what you're calling the "archer's paradigm"...is that the same as the "archers paradox," or are they two different aspects? Thanks!

  • you must be one hell of a hunter man you didnt move at all when you were talking in the first segment i thought the computer was frozen excellent vid thumbs up

  • what range were you shooting at?

  • i can HEAR it ok

  • it probably would be worthwhile to redo the video.

  • I CAN'T HEAR SHIT.

  • @aseglkj Sorry man this is an old video, no wind screen.

  • @wildernessoutfitters no need to apologize. I appreciate the efforts you make to share your knowledge and this vid is still valuable to me. peace.

  • @aseglkj you must be deff or you should turn up your speekers

  • @aseglkj neither could ur mon last nite

  • Comment removed

  • @aseglkj I used a Speaker when the wind gusts blew on the mic. so I could hear it better, then took it out when they calmed down. ^^

  • if on the re-curve the string hits the belly of the bow why not put leather or fur near the tips? just wondering i'm new to archery

  • if the string is hitting the belly of the bow why don't you just put some leather or fur in the belly near the tips?

  • awsome video.

  • wind.....

  • My brother's recurve shoots the arrow straight and it is a little high and then it does a barrel roll and hits the target... Its a cneter shot too....

  • great video, wish i had seen it years ago...

  • is this the guy who does Dual survival?

  • Your shoot that R./D bow the best... You should of mentioned that longer bows are easier and more forgiving to shoot well, and the best ones for those who are interested in getting started with traditional archery.. I would say dont buy any recurve shorter then 62" string knock to string knock when unstrung...A 64-66 inch recurve between 35-40lbs are the sweetest shooting bows your gonna get your hands on.. 50 bucks on ebay all day long.. Vintage Ben Pearson, Bear, Browning, Hoyt...

  • "this is a recurve bow...shhhh... and thats an archers paradimeshhhhhhh thats the traditional longbow." haha im just kiddin man i love your videos, i recently got into archery myself, i got a PSE Sequioya Longbow with a 45 pound draw wieght to learn with. thanks for this video man!

  • Damn Dave you are a good shot with a bow! I was just watching and all of a sudden you group like 4 arrows on that target lul...no wonder you came back with a turkey last week.

  • OK. My mistake. on Dual Survival you are given a take down bow and you make the arrows out of "Salmonberry" shafts. Still very cool.

    Al

  • Hey thank you very much for your vids. I've been using the wrong weight arrows.

  • Great video. I am looking forward to next weeks "Dual Survival" show. In the previews you appear to have taken a bird (Turkey) with what appears to be a homemade bow. Great show by the way.

    Al

  • i once had some arrows that used to fly through the air on fire at 700 mph or more. and i accidentally killed and baked a bird with one of them. my brother destroyed the equipment i was using

  • I am assuming that the problems with spine weight would be reversed if you were shooting lefty? (as i am one) Also, I hadn't seen if this was mentioned before, but either some subtitles a few well placed overdubs, or even a wind filter treatment on your source audio (if you can find an engineer to do it for you) would really make that video quality better. one last thing, if you are using a high grade camera it's possible to get a nice windsock for the mic, lessening your issues with wind.

  • wat model bow is that

  • Dave Tape some foam over your Mic I did on my cam and it's much better with the wind

  • damn i was gettin into this vid too, wind became too bothersome

  • Nice grouping Dave.

  • what is the best recurve for a newcomer

  • My personal belief after doing it the wrong way {compound working my way back} is to start off with a recurve bow of approximately 35lb weight in a 60, 62,or 64 inch length... It doesnt have to be expensive, a no frills Pearson,Wing,Bear, ect, off ebay... no more then 40 or 50 $..Then get yourself a set of Easton 1816 aluminum arrows, a tab, stringer, and forearm guard... Under 100 bucks and your set... Starting off with a 35lbs bow will let you shoot alot and develope good form..

  • @rainmechanic thanks

  • how about a 150 lbs plus English longbow

  • godamned wind

  • Don't be a fag. A black tail deer isn't a human being. Seriously, you've never hunted big game with a bow have you? Anyway, feel free to continue shooting off your mouth as I'm done posting.

  • could you tell me were you got your reflex deflex longbow, and recurve..... awsome videos keep em comin

  • Please feel free to post the vid of when you kill ANYTHING other than perhaps a squirrel with a 20# bow.

  • You really don't know anything about archery do you?

  • You will never get close enough to any wild animal that would allow you to kill anything with a 20# bow except maybe a squirrel. Please stop posting on this subject as you are anything but a voice of reason.

  • im female and i shoot a recurve and a longbow. go to an archery store that knows its stuff. they can help you fidn the right draw weight and length for you. i use a 34 pound with 28" draw length. draw length depends on how tall you are and how long your arms are.weight depends on how strong your arms are. im small, so my weight is only 35 pounds. its a ton of fun, so dont put off doing it.

  • great vid it is a shame that damn withchery with the wind i agree with waddupnoob a wind sock could have been a great help

  • @XxU2UBExX then we all must be sick lol

  • ur camera needs a wind sock

  • Way to go!.

Traditional archery requires lots of practice and skill. This is an old skill and

I love to see someone that has spent the time to get it right.

  • When making a bow, is it possible to use bungee cord or some flexible cord/wire for the drawstring?

  • no because you need it to be stiff because all the power comes from the base(wood part)

  • I make homemade

  • are you suppose to shoot off your index knukle? if so then why am i more accurate when i shoot off my thumb knukle?

  • @ hobbs312: For accuracy, traditionally longbows are shot from the index finger.

Great video! The Timberhawk is a beautiful bow, I will definately look into them. Modern recurve and compound bows have their uses but nothing beats the centuries-proven effectiveness of a traditional longbow. They aren't just great weapons but are works of art.

  • BTW, after watching this vid I went out and bought the Timberhawk longbow in question. 62" with a 46# draw. It was $529.

Scott from Timberhawk bows spent a lot of time talking to me over the phone regarding what I was looking for in a bow and discussed in depth the pros and cons of the different selections of wood that I could select.

It shoots so beautifully! If anybody is in the market for a reflex-deflex longbow, I would definitely recommned this one. It's a quality bow! Woot!

  • Good vid, sound SUCKS, winnnnddyyyyyy

  • do u think that 55 pound draw weight bow can kill a deer?

  • If you had to, a 35 lb draw would kill a deer, in a pinch.

Im sure 55 pound draw is more than enough.

  • definately.

  • A 40# draw weight is hunting legal in Washington State.

  • As low as 40 pounds or so would kill a deer with a good shot. 55 pounds is more than enough I go with 55 pounds myself

  • nice arrows

  • Love your videos...

but you need to get a wind shield for your mic

get a wireless mic that clips on your collar

or put subtitles on your videos

cause that wind is killing me :P

  • dave, you have some of the best vids on youtube that deal with wilderness/ self reliance situations.

  • i notice you are left handed but shoot right. is that just comfort or did you train yourself to shoot right cause you are right eye dominant? i'm just getting into archery and i'm curious about this concept. i'm right handed but i'm also left eye dominant. thanks.

  • what would you reacomend for hunting a longbow or recurve?

  • i want a skill to make a bow's like that

  • pretty good shot!

  • how can you stop the limb slap on the recurve?

  • OMG don't tell me that you made all these bows!they are awesome

  • i love that pse kudu

  • beautiful bows dave, im jealous

    5******

  • Excellent explaining about traditionalbow's.

  • 2:10-2:20 you can't hear him, and more throughout the video!!!

  • Taking a cameraman along would be a better idea. But, I enjoy watching anyway.

  • camera girl ;-)

  • (Bigger grin) Yeah!

  • try putting a piece or foam over the mic the wind wont mess it up.

  • stupid wind i couldnt hear what you were saying alot of times

  • whats the easyiest of those to pull back least weight

  • Great video, very informative. I look foreward to seeing the rest. Cool title to choose for your video, Have you read Maurice Thompson 1879?

  • man i just hate to see a bow so arched. i mean c'mon it's almost like a hlf of a circle.

  • Holy crap! Well... good luck with that I guess...

  • Most of the problems I had were about relaxing and just "letting go" rather than making a specific movement to release the string.

  • thanks for the vid...very intersesting....i dont happen to shoot any of these but i still enjoy learning about them....

    thanks dude

  • By the way it's Archer's paradox not paradigm. No disrespect intended, Other than that great vid.

  • why do u put some fluffy stuff on your string?

  • To help cut down on noise from vibration.

  • @wildernessoutfitters

Would love to see how to make and attach dampeners in the wild.

  • takes alot of the shock out of the string and plus it cuts down on noise

  • Do you create your bows?

  • Just for the record, its Archer's Paradox, not paradigm refers to a school of thought. Paradox refers to apparent truths leading to a contradiction.

Aside from my minor nit-picking, this would be of great help to those interested in shooting barebow, or just archery in general.

  • A very nice video thanks a lot.

  • hey dave, first off great videos, i appreciate all the ideas you share to add to our tool boxes, when you were talking about the paradym and shooting to left or right, would it be the opposite for lefties?

  • I'm not Dave, but yes, it would.

  • Great video. I Love that reflex-deflex bow !!

    Thanks again Dave

  • nice vid!! you gave alot of info. i bet your unbeatable at darts

  • I can't wait until the next video

I love the music in all of your videos

  • Thanks Great vid Keep the videos coming

  • nice video man love archery really like to get out and shoot more. Nice video again.

  • cool video 5*

  • Part of the audio is very hard to hear because of the wind (about 10 seconds starting at 2:10). Thought you should know. Maybe you can post up text of what your saying at that point so you don't have to re-film.

  • You didnt miss anything I reiterate about the center shot principles a few seconds later. Thanks man. The wind was bad that day.

  • great video! i cant wait to see part 2.

  • So awesome that you're making these videos. Keep 'em coming!
