Easy slip-up, not having a go at Dave in anyway - nothing but respect for the man:
But anyone wanting to do further research into what he said about the arrow flex etc. it's actually call the "archer's paradox" - not paradigm.
Again, love the videos, this set explained so much and gives great understanding and a great set of techniques to try and and develope into your own skills!
@skcuf1 Yep, that's the guy! Dave Canterbury had been doing these videos a while before getting the Dual Survival gig. I think he like, over 500 videos now - all freely on youtube, cool huh?
Great Video Dave. I am a big fan of anything traditional. Especially Archery. There are various products out there that combat string slap. What you are needing are Limb-savers and brush buttons as well as silencers. I recommend 3 Rivers Archery. Limb-savers 10 bux, Brush buttons 2 bux.And if you make your own silencer as I do then thats free, Oh yes arrow rest quiets her down considerably... Hope this helps someone.
Actually its ARCHER'S P-A-R-A-D-O-X. a paradigm is a subconcious way of thinking. "the Earth is here for man to exploit" for example. Also, a center shot or non center shot bow has absoloutely nothing to do with it being a recurve or longbow. There are examples of almost every type of bow that are either center or non center shot. Fine tune your terminology and theory before teaching others......also the archer should NEVER be conciously aware of the arrow...youll shoot high
Great video! Thanks for all the information. I just bought my first bow yesterday (a Fred Bear Grizzly), and I'm on pins and needles for the weather to warm up so I can test drive it--until then, I'm soaking up information from instructors like you! I have a question though...what you're calling the "archer's paradigm"...is that the same as the "archers paradox," or are they two different aspects? Thanks!
you must be one hell of a hunter man you didnt move at all when you were talking in the first segment i thought the computer was frozen excellent vid thumbs up
My brother's recurve shoots the arrow straight and it is a little high and then it does a barrel roll and hits the target... Its a cneter shot too....
Your shoot that R./D bow the best... You should of mentioned that longer bows are easier and more forgiving to shoot well, and the best ones for those who are interested in getting started with traditional archery.. I would say dont buy any recurve shorter then 62" string knock to string knock when unstrung...A 64-66 inch recurve between 35-40lbs are the sweetest shooting bows your gonna get your hands on.. 50 bucks on ebay all day long.. Vintage Ben Pearson, Bear, Browning, Hoyt...
"this is a recurve bow...shhhh... and thats an archers paradimeshhhhhhh thats the traditional longbow." haha im just kiddin man i love your videos, i recently got into archery myself, i got a PSE Sequioya Longbow with a 45 pound draw wieght to learn with. thanks for this video man!
Damn Dave you are a good shot with a bow! I was just watching and all of a sudden you group like 4 arrows on that target lul...no wonder you came back with a turkey last week.
Great video. I am looking forward to next weeks "Dual Survival" show. In the previews you appear to have taken a bird (Turkey) with what appears to be a homemade bow. Great show by the way.
i once had some arrows that used to fly through the air on fire at 700 mph or more. and i accidentally killed and baked a bird with one of them. my brother destroyed the equipment i was using
I am assuming that the problems with spine weight would be reversed if you were shooting lefty? (as i am one) Also, I hadn't seen if this was mentioned before, but either some subtitles a few well placed overdubs, or even a wind filter treatment on your source audio (if you can find an engineer to do it for you) would really make that video quality better. one last thing, if you are using a high grade camera it's possible to get a nice windsock for the mic, lessening your issues with wind.
My personal belief after doing it the wrong way {compound working my way back} is to start off with a recurve bow of approximately 35lb weight in a 60, 62,or 64 inch length... It doesnt have to be expensive, a no frills Pearson,Wing,Bear, ect, off ebay... no more then 40 or 50 $..Then get yourself a set of Easton 1816 aluminum arrows, a tab, stringer, and forearm guard... Under 100 bucks and your set... Starting off with a 35lbs bow will let you shoot alot and develope good form..
Don't be a fag. A black tail deer isn't a human being. Seriously, you've never hunted big game with a bow have you? Anyway, feel free to continue shooting off your mouth as I'm done posting.
You will never get close enough to any wild animal that would allow you to kill anything with a 20# bow except maybe a squirrel. Please stop posting on this subject as you are anything but a voice of reason.
im female and i shoot a recurve and a longbow. go to an archery store that knows its stuff. they can help you fidn the right draw weight and length for you. i use a 34 pound with 28" draw length. draw length depends on how tall you are and how long your arms are.weight depends on how strong your arms are. im small, so my weight is only 35 pounds. its a ton of fun, so dont put off doing it.
@ hobbs312: For accuracy, traditionally longbows are shot from the index finger.
Great video! The Timberhawk is a beautiful bow, I will definately look into them. Modern recurve and compound bows have their uses but nothing beats the centuries-proven effectiveness of a traditional longbow. They aren't just great weapons but are works of art.
BTW, after watching this vid I went out and bought the Timberhawk longbow in question. 62" with a 46# draw. It was $529.
Scott from Timberhawk bows spent a lot of time talking to me over the phone regarding what I was looking for in a bow and discussed in depth the pros and cons of the different selections of wood that I could select.
It shoots so beautifully! If anybody is in the market for a reflex-deflex longbow, I would definitely recommned this one. It's a quality bow! Woot!
i notice you are left handed but shoot right. is that just comfort or did you train yourself to shoot right cause you are right eye dominant? i'm just getting into archery and i'm curious about this concept. i'm right handed but i'm also left eye dominant. thanks.
hey dave, first off great videos, i appreciate all the ideas you share to add to our tool boxes, when you were talking about the paradym and shooting to left or right, would it be the opposite for lefties?
Part of the audio is very hard to hear because of the wind (about 10 seconds starting at 2:10). Thought you should know. Maybe you can post up text of what your saying at that point so you don't have to re-film.

Just for the record, its Archer's Paradox, not paradigm refers to a school of thought. Paradox refers to apparent truths leading to a contradiction.
Aside from my minor nit-picking, this would be of great help to those interested in shooting barebow, or just archery in general.
