ironically everyone here sees steve as a great guitar player...of which he is...... of course....however let me tel you its his compositions and composing that sets him apart from other guitarists...his knowledge of orchestration is evidently unlimited
i am afraid to judge about who's being the best technically, there r so many guitarists on this planet, but when it comes down to composing and expressing himself in the spheres where not ev'ryone allowed, steve is by far the best rock guitar on this quiet earth.
....anyone out there live near the Runcorn area? Moonlit Nite play their first gig on saturday 13th march at The Norton Arms. Show starts 21:30. Be there!!
Why not? Steve boasts that he influenced Brian May (Harmony guitar), that he invented variations of tapping, that Van Halen picked up on his tapping techniques and that top classical voices have strong feelings about his stunning accoustic and orchestral works. - I'm quoting!
@stronglish Steve Hackett is the guitar player YOU PREFER the most. Even Steve wouldn´t say who is the best. P.S. I prefer Steve Howe prior to Steve Hackett, but I wouldn´t say Howe is better than Hackett.
@Yesshows01 Steve is quite boastful about his all round skill but he'd probably point to Buckethead being technically the best electric guitarist who is just naturally very gifted.
Well, I have admired Steve's work throughout the years, I have all his albums, I'm a Genesis fan of the honorable Hackett-Gabriel era, he might not be the best guitarist but he is quite unique, a master of his own dreams, and time has proven that, but, speaking of Rock guitarists and classical guitarists Steve has a very good position, when it comes to Rock, well, MY OWN FAVOURITE Guitarists are : 1.- Lifeson, 2.-Hackett, 3.-Howe, 4.-Gilmour, 5.-Balackmore, 6.-Buck Dharma, 7.-Rabin and more...
I used to be a huge Genesis fan and while they have great songs and are good musicians I don't remember Steve Hacket being a particularly stunning player. Ground breaking rock guitarists are people like Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen and maybe a few others. I have nothing against Steve Hacket but he is far from the greatest of all time by any reasonable measure. If he's a personal favorite that's a different matter.
What about the solo's on Firth Of Fifth, Ripples and The Lamia also the classical guitar opening on Blood on the rooftops? The man is streets ahead of anybody save for perhaps Gilmour and Latimer.
Ok, so go watch a few Stanley Jordan videos and then tell me if you still think Hackett is the "greatest guitarist of all time. Again, I'm not talking about your personal favorite. Try to give an honest objective opinion.
He's the master of guitar, he is the voice of the guitar. Listen to his compositions 'Walking away from Rainbows' (Classical) and 'Twice around the sun' (Rock) and come back to me.
Friends - this greatest rock guitarist of all time thing is silly. Different people have their favourites, and it depends on what rocks your boat.
However officially voted for by musicologists, musicians and fans alike and No 1 in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the top of countless lists is JIMI HENDRIX. He is the greatest whether you appreciate his music or not. If anyone still wants to make lists then they will always have to start at the No. 2 position. No. 1 has been taken, period.
Peter Gabriel said someting about Steve once like "many of the other players were into notes and things, Steve was into atmosphere's...." based on this he got the gig with Genesis and the rest as they say, is history.
If you are turned on by shredding then you will miss the sublety of Steve's talent but if you can open your ears and slow down your heart for a few minutes.... like me you may become to think the man is a genius.
Ed Wynne of Ozric Tentacles is an underrated/unknown musician. Bob Clic of Melting Euphoria is even more unknown. And then there is jazz/rock guitarist Kazumi Watanabe. give them a listen
Why buy albums of Van Halen, Alvin Lee, Stephen Stills, Richard Thomson, Phil Keaggy, Ace Frehley, Hendrix, and all the others if you only have to listen to one?
Guys, Steve does it all, and next to that: he's a brilliant composer.
No doubt about it: I never heard one better than Steve!
funkiller, i have to tell you that steve hackett HAVE INVENTED tapping tecnique, in the later 1970 and pehraps before joying Genesis!
Van halen has picked up Steve's tecnique and made one of the principal key of his sound. And anyway, try and listen steve hacket's music, he's relly a good guitarist and most of all a good composer!
Cool to see Steve after so many years - thanks for the post. Unlike so many other guitar heros from the 70s, he has learned lots of new techniques and now uses a whammy for squeals and dives on his Les Paul. Great playing, especially when you consider the updated transformation from the 70s technique - I have had to do the same thing, and it wasn't easy. The best? well....
I should not have mentioned anything about "best" in my post - Puts music in the same competitive mode as the WWF. At this level, ALL the players are GREAT - it just depends on which style you like personally. There is a lot of discussion here about who is better than who, and not much about content, so your post is interesting. Steve Hackett and Steve Howe were my favorite guitarists all through the 70s. The concert with Hackett and Paul Gilbert (vids on utube) is really cool, check it out.
how about bill connors of return to forever or Steve Tibbets or Ed Wynne of Ozric Tentacles or Bob Clic of Melting Euphoria or Larry Corryell or Pat Martino or John McLaughlin or Toninho Horta or Terje Rypdal or Egberto Gismonti or steffi sharpstrings or Daevid Allen of Gong or Steve Hillage of System 7. Bottom line is listen to Ozric Tentacles and Melting Euphoria on the youtube.
One of my favorites of the 70's British prog era.Unique sound and very original, which is saying a lot, I think, because that is a very hard thing to do in the wank world of rock.
His Name is Steve Hackett. He was the Lead Guitarist for the band Genesis in the seventies. This guy on Lead Guitar flanked by Peter Gabriel on lead vocals really were awesome to say the least... Had to like their music though of course :)
Jeff Beck is Without Any Doubt The Greatest Guitarist of All Time. He was the One that Really Launched Guitar-Driven Music and the First to Introduce the Real Blues (New York City Blues) AND the One Who Started the Experimentation W/New Sounds & Thus, Psychedellia- al British Blues,
Both very similar, Gilmour bends more with Hackett sustaining notes more. Similar agression but Hackett can play any style but chooses to play melodious often catchy stuff.
eddy van halen's a tool. i hate how tapping can fool all non guitar players into thinking its the most difficult thing to do on a guitar. i taught my friend how to play the tapping part of eruption in like 5 minutes, with no prior experience
Genesis were not really an axe band and Hackett sounds like he was chooning a bob-cat on here.I reckon Steve Howe, Alex lifeson and the Edge are all better players> This song sounds like gary moore playing backwards at the bottom of a well
indeed not-sah - he is the best of the "new" crop although he started 25 years ago - I think he has a certain understated control - a distinctive electric guitar timbre and an percussive style of playing, along with his innovative use of digital sound processing - sort of simplicity less is more and all that - its just me, I may be right, I may be wrong - The guitar player in Yes sounds like this - at least he is (ahem) close to the edge - BOOM BOOM - Mr. Derek etc (groan - ED!)
eddie van halen just plays the same very simple stuff quickly where as hackett moves it around more and gets a deeper sound. When van halen does it its a bit like ' oh god here's another face slapping, obvious solo' but when hackett does it it fits in with the music as apposed to it jumping out at you which is a much harder effect to achive!

THE SAME IS TRUE ABOUT EVERYONE ELSE THE DIFFERNCE IS YOUR STYLE AND MAKING IT YOUR OWN WHILE COPYING YOUR FAVORITE INFLUENCES. GOT IT SO LIKE DIME WOULD SAY "GET YOUR PULL"
David Gilmour couldn't play with a pick? You mean he can now? Yay. I love Dave but Hackett is good too. Page seems to be a holy matter to his fans. He's only good on album versions.
All I remember is taking some serious flak off Yank sickos for George Bush's war of terror.
I suppose aiming your frustrations at me and my ass is better than hitting your wives or invading some small poor country with oil or precious stones.
speaking of Bush, please give a listen to Michael Tsarion on the youtube. This man has spent thirty years of his life studying the downside of christianity(satanism and freemasonry) and much can be learned from him regarding the true nature of politics. Bush is no worse than the other satanist maggot Jimmy Carter. Once again Americans need to give up eating roadkill(hamburgers, fish, dogfood, squid, oysters). After Peter Gabriel is vegetarian 'and' he is intelligent.
haha your so fukcing against america you stupid fucking communist. just because you dont have a very good education doesnt mean you should blame other countries. and im not a fucking american if thats what your asking. so i dont see why you keeep lowballing americans and calling me an american animal when i dont even live in the fucking states. GO FUCK YOURSELF BITCH
SOCIAL ETIQUETTE!?!? ITS FUCKING MUSIC YOU STUPID STEREOTYPING UGLY BITCH! YOUR A FUCKING IDIOT FOR EVERYTHING YOU SAY BECAUSE YOU MAKE YOURSELF SOUND SO FUCKING STUPID. why dont you fucking hang yourself for not being able to accept others because your a fucking loser who will never amount to anything in life and is just a pathetic fucking cunt who doesnt know what real music is. TRY PICKING UP A FUCKING GUITAR AND PLAY A COUPLE NOTES BITCH!
the reason jimmy page is a great guitarist is because he can IMPROVISE a 2 hour solo and make it sound good something almost no guitar player can do . secondly you know nothing about guitar you stupid bitch.
SOCIAL ETIQUETTE!?!? ITS FUCKING MUSIC YOU STUPID STEREOTYPING UGLY BITCH! Steve Hackett has what most guitarist lack, atmosphere and feeling. There are many guitarists that are flashier and faster. My band plays Valley of the Kings. No one knows it but we always get a huge response when the song is done.
speaking of underrated prog rock give a listen to Ozric Tentacles and Melting Euphoria on the youtube. And it would be nice if Americans would eat way less meat or better yet eat none at all. p.s. Gong is the best prog rock band of all time.
What??? Just how many guitarists have you seen? I'm not saying he sucks, but I've seen 18 years old kids that could play just as well while trying out guitars in music stores.
You are obviously a big fan and I commend the intensity of your admiration for Genesis and Steve Hackett. I will certainly not try to change your mind about it. I feel the same way about other artists/bands and realize what a pointless endevour that would be. But you should be a little more receptive to other people's opinions without resorting to name-calling. There were, are, and will be lots of equaly great musicians and songwriters out there. Don't miss out on them is all I'm saying here!
i reckon there is no "best guitarist ever' because every guitarist is strong in their own ways however i personally like eddie van halen coz his stuffs so mint
haha who are you to pick the worlds best guitarist? in my opinion i think this guy sucks ass at guitar and i personally think dimebag darell is a much better guitar player than this guy. but thats my opinion, we all have different ones. if you like this guy thats cool and MISSING NOTES OR PLAYING WITHOUT ERROR HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH GOOD GUITAR PLAYING. the only way to be a good guitar player is to actually know how to play a guitar and adding your own style to it. fuck eyah agressive playing.
Of course it got something to do with it you hostile American fuck. All Americans want is harsh playing and great guitarists nominate themselves for the best. I.E. Clapton and Gilmour, not Hendrix and Hammett ...not me.
He's good, but far from the best! In my humble opinion, Al DiMeola, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Robin Trower, Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix are are all better guitarists and recording artists. Their work has stood the test of time, thirty to fourty years!
that is the most commen excuse i've herd from van halen..... "oh speed isn't everything", "oh he copies eveybody with his 2 hand tapping" well what i say is that speed is like volume and sometimes it's better to pay it loud.... and second big eddie may not have invented tapping but he sure as hell popularized it.... and plus he single-handedly re-wrote rock and roll in the 80's so until I see anybody make a more popular song than eruption then im gonna have to stick with eddie.... he set the bar
Only thing he's recorded that is famous in the UK is Jump. Not even guitar driven lol - everyone defined rock Beatles, Zep, Sabbath, it takes the piss.
ok...rterry0 you are misrepesenting our country, go read a newspaper or something, idiot! Stronglish, you have no right whatsoever to categorize an entire country into a single or a multitude of stereotypes, go take some ecstasy, have an orgy, eat some fish and chips, and dont forget to brush your teeth, after your spouse/lover beats your ass (which is not the sexiest on the net, btw)
you again, you are a fucking idiot. jimi is the most influential, greatest guitarist of all time. that's why clapton and beck and townsend were all crying in their beers when he came along.
Then you havent heard of Joe Satriani. This guy is putting me to sleep! I have seen the whole video and all I can say is DON"T listen to this crap while driving or operate any heavy equipment as this guitar playing works as a depresent
i love how he has so much energy you know. standing there doing fuckall. barely changing keys. fuck this guy. your ass is ugly, bitch.

Bush is no worse than the other satanist maggot Jimmy Carter. Once again Americans need to give up eating roadkill(hamburgers, fish, dogfood, squid, oysters). After Peter Gabriel is vegetarian 'and' he is intelligent.

Fucking die with all the other clueless USA animals.
stronglish 4 years ago
Fuck off american antagonist, it's about the guitar not my ass.
stronglish 4 years ago
the reason jimmy page is a great guitarist is because he can IMPROVISE a 2 hour solo and make it sound good something almost no guitar player can do . secondly you know nothing about guitar you stupid bitch.
smartfit 4 years ago
You know nothing about social etiquette, you mixed up deluded Yank fuck.

Jimmy Page was (is) the sloppiest guitar player ever. Only reason he got popular was because Robert Plant.
dholmes40 4 years ago
true
stronglish 3 years ago
Steve Hackett has what most guitarist lack, atmosphere and feeling. There are many guitarists that are flashier and faster. My band plays Valley of the Kings. No one knows it but we always get a huge response when the song is done.
dholmes40 4 years ago 2
The song should be more famous, I don't know why it never took off.
stronglish 4 years ago
speaking of underrated prog rock give a listen to Ozric Tentacles and Melting Euphoria on the youtube. And it would be nice if Americans would eat way less meat or better yet eat none at all. p.s. Gong is the best prog rock band of all time.
countdumas 2 years ago
Written and played by the greatest.
stronglish 4 years ago
What??? Just how many guitarists have you seen? I'm not saying he sucks, but I've seen 18 years old kids that could play just as well while trying out guitars in music stores.
crackpot60 4 years ago
..and they wrote music like Valley of the Kings? Albatross etc etc???
stronglish 4 years ago
I read "Best guitarist" as the title...Not "Best songwriting by a band". This is a comment about guitar-playing.
crackpot60 4 years ago
title is greatest which isn't about guitar playing, cunt. It's not greatest playing guitarist.
stronglish 4 years ago
You are obviously a big fan and I commend the intensity of your admiration for Genesis and Steve Hackett. I will certainly not try to change your mind about it. I feel the same way about other artists/bands and realize what a pointless endevour that would be. But you should be a little more receptive to other people's opinions without resorting to name-calling. There were, are, and will be lots of equaly great musicians and songwriters out there. Don't miss out on them is all I'm saying here!

Fuck off and die with all the other patronising and hostile american inbreds.
You're a vile race, well below us 'other' humans.
stronglish 4 years ago
i reckon there is no "best guitarist ever' because every guitarist is strong in their own ways however i personally like eddie van halen coz his stuffs so mint
alligatorhater4 4 years ago
The best is someone who could play everything with less errors than anyone else and sound more melodious doing it.
I think Dave Gilmour wins the sense stakes as his sounds are very pleasing to the ears and not offensive like more aggressive players.
stronglish 4 years ago
haha who are you to pick the worlds best guitarist? in my opinion i think this guy sucks ass at guitar and i personally think dimebag darell is a much better guitar player than this guy. but thats my opinion, we all have different ones. if you like this guy thats cool and MISSING NOTES OR PLAYING WITHOUT ERROR HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH GOOD GUITAR PLAYING. the only way to be a good guitar player is to actually know how to play a guitar and adding your own style to it. fuck eyah agressive playing.
smartfit 4 years ago
Of course it got something to do with it you hostile American fuck. All Americans want is harsh playing and great guitarists nominate themselves for the best. I.E. Clapton and Gilmour, not Hendrix and Hammett ...not me.
stronglish 4 years ago
jimi hendrix is the best guitarist in the world hands down
MCRandGerardWayRule 4 years ago
Probably was on his day.

Its good but i preefer Yngwie Malmsteen and Janne Schaffer.

To Dave Gilmour, Latimer and Hackett?

Vem fan tycker inte om Janne?
SliqueSpingu 3 years ago
Steve Hackett IS the best guitarist in the world.
Nobody else can play a solo as good or fast as that without making it souns as noise.
I have heard lots of both Steve Hackett and Genesis and i haven't ever heard a better guitarist.
muskatDR 4 years ago
No mistakes either or timming errors, I've listened to Page live and there's so many duff notes.
stronglish 4 years ago
jimmy page and hendrix are wa better then this guy
tidler31 4 years ago
Many will disagree outside the states.
stronglish 4 years ago
this guy IS good. I'll admit that...but Mattias Ia Ecklundh is much better.
monkeymunky666 4 years ago
You can't dismiss him on 1 song.
stronglish 4 years ago
He's good, but far from the best! In my humble opinion, Al DiMeola, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Robin Trower, Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix are are all better guitarists and recording artists. Their work has stood the test of time, thirty to fourty years!
captainfunk50 4 years ago
And Genesis' music hasn't? There is more demand for them than ever. Especially with Hackett and Peter Gabriel in the line up.
stronglish 4 years ago
that is the most commen excuse i've herd from van halen..... "oh speed isn't everything", "oh he copies eveybody with his 2 hand tapping" well what i say is that speed is like volume and sometimes it's better to pay it loud.... and second big eddie may not have invented tapping but he sure as hell popularized it.... and plus he single-handedly re-wrote rock and roll in the 80's so until I see anybody make a more popular song than eruption then im gonna have to stick with eddie.... he set the bar
thrasher025 4 years ago
Only thing he's recorded that is famous in the UK is Jump. Not even guitar driven lol - everyone defined rock Beatles, Zep, Sabbath, it takes the piss.
He died with the 80's

ok...rterry0 you are misrepesenting our country, go read a newspaper or something, idiot!

I think I do have the right when 100's of Americans give me abuse on youtube everyday and no other nation.
I won't eat too much fish n chips as I'd be obese like all Yanks.
Please keep my other vids from the topic of this please you ignorant inbred gun toting American.
stronglish 4 years ago
haha touche!
simplebeat 4 years ago
pretty good, but I still think George Lynch, Steve Vai, Randy Rhoads, Eddie Van Halen, Dave Mustaine, and Slash are better.
Patsun9 4 years ago
Van Halen learnt his trade by copying Steve's tapping inovation.
stronglish 4 years ago
what about slash haa?? (check out my vids)
boulibou 4 years ago
noise. good guitarists don't have to be loud, thrashy or fast.
Riffs don't make great guitarists either, it's all about the feeling. Nobody comes close to Gilmour, Hackett, Greenwood or Latimer.
stronglish 4 years ago
ARPMANDUDE is the greatest guitarist of all time!!!
yhvh13 4 years ago
and once again you are wrong, the best guitarist of all time is jimi hendrix...an american.
Lordsauron12 4 years ago
Not in the top 50.
stronglish 4 years ago
you again, you are a fucking idiot. jimi is the most influential, greatest guitarist of all time. that's why clapton and beck and townsend were all crying in their beers when he came along.
USA #1
crumards2 4 years ago
lOl, there isn't an American guitarist in the top 20 in any form, classical or rock.
Come to think of it the top 20 bands of all time are all from Europe.
The USA is influencial for their Wars to be honest, largely by Premier Bush's war of terror in Iraq.
stronglish 4 years ago
Then you havent heard of Joe Satriani. This guy is putting me to sleep! I have seen the whole video and all I can say is DON"T listen to this crap while driving or operate any heavy equipment as this guitar playing works as a depresent
