Either an animal has a trait that is passed on sexually that allows it to be better adapted to its environment, or it has a totally random mutation (1/4? that's not an accurate number) that allows it to be better adapted to its environment. This is called ... sexual selection. One trait grows more prominent over time, regardless of its benefits.

If the genetic mutation is beneficial to its current environment, it'll actually thrive and be more likely to find a mate, where 50% of both the mothers and fathers genes are passed on. @Schoening91 OK, I'll try to keep this simple. Evolution: Sometimes a gene mutates. The result will either be: insignificant(most of the time), harmful(often), or beneficial. That it is beneficial isn't alone enough for a mutated gene to be passed on(random accident always occur), but it helps. And yes, you're right, a fish won't suddenly be able to breath - that would take many small incremental mutations over (yawn) millions of years. But what the Hell? The Earth has all the time in the world.

I mention this because the geological record shows that new species do come into existence even if we aren't yet sure exactly how. Humans, for example, didn't yet exist when dinosaurs were still around. So, that means everything couldn't have been created all at once. Also, the very oldest fossilized organisms were simpler than they are today, implying that lifeforms have become more complex.

The simple way to tell the difference between a trick and real magic is to stop letting the magician define what trick he will show you. A real supernaturally capable magician could do the trick you define. If they tell you what they will do that is one of the tricks they have prepared for. You define the trick and don't let them "improve on it" or elaborate it in any way.

Randi, I think, is just using this type of talk for practical purposes and the type of audience, not as a philosophical argument or one about theoretical physics or the nature of reality.
Randi-like skeptics, do not claim absolute knowledge, neither are deniers who won't accept scientific evidence and consensus, they embrace it instead and ask: "are there simpler explanations of phenomena others claim to be paranormal or the like? Is there a fraud?" That's a great service to me.

@Schoening91 That's because "positive" evolution isn't evolution through natural selection. No biologist believes in "positive" evolution. Either an animal has a trait that is passed on sexually that allows it to be better adapted to its environment, or it has a totally random mutation (1/4? that's not an accurate number) that allows it to be better adapted to its environment. This is called ... sexual selection. One trait grows more prominent over time, regardless of its benefits.

No that will take "Lol Millions of years" (yawn) Now i don't know if you are good with microbiology but the mutated Gene, ( this is what keeps a mutation running ) Has only a 1/4 chance to be transfered to the next generation ! moreover might this fish have problems finding a mate because his mutation might be a disablility..

@coercingcoexistence So seeing animals with genetic mutations dying more rapidly and suffering from their weakened DNA . i can't see how evolution in the way i belive you are seeing it . is possible. However, IF the world was created, with his beings being perfect.. i can accept evolution, since for me evolution is a way of explaining DNA pollution.. BTW Big Bang Therory is far more convienient than Evolution.. or are you just talking about the show? :o

@Schoening91 We do not see animals with genetic mutations dying more. If the genetic mutation is beneficial to its current environment, it'll actually thrive and be more likely to find a mate, where 50% of both the mothers and fathers genes are passed on. This is why it takes millions of years. We can prove this sort of evolution exists and we have. Through experiments with short lived insects and flies. You're silly.

@Schoening91 OK, I'll try to keep this simple. Evolution: Sometimes a gene mutates. The result will either be: insignificant(most of the time), harmful(often), or beneficial. That it is beneficial isn't alone enough for a mutated gene to be passed on(random accident always occur), but it helps. And yes, you're right, a fish won't suddenly be able to breath - that would take many small incremental mutations over (yawn) millions of years. But what the Hell? The Earth has all the time in the world.

@Schoening91 Hey, no problem. You could also look into geological articles. I mention this because the geological record shows that new species do come into existence even if we aren't yet sure exactly how. Humans, for example, didn't yet exist when dinosaurs were still around. So, that means everything couldn't have been created all at once. Also, the very oldest fossilized organisms were simpler than they are today, implying that lifeforms have become more complex.

@Schoening91 you know humans are nothing then organic material, like any other animal oder plants, we are a big bunch of cells, sorry for my english, its not my mother language. cells joined together to have a symbiose and they benefit from it. I cant believe that you dont accept evolution, species evolve to adapt themselfes or have advantages, all to secure their own species. Why religion claims humans were the first on this planet but dinosaur existed long long time bevore humans

The same counts with god, primitive humans in the past believed in god because they couldnt explain things at all, thats why they invented a fire god or a sun good, a god of the jungle etcc. because things like floods,fire or diseases shocked them. @Schoening91 and yet some modern ppl still believe in a book with tales, thousands of years old from a time ppl were primitive. Remember 300 years ago ppl believed in ghosts and witches and you believe in a book much much older.Thats why i believe religions are one of the biggest dangers until now, especially Islam. I know that in 100 or 200 years europe will be under islamic law, if you look at statistics and so on, it scares me i must say because it will develop back, loose the progress.
