This is one of my favorite hymns- there's something hauntingly beautiful in a minor key.
When I attended seminary, we actually sang this for the Feast of the Annunciation (which actually makes sense).
The last lyric always caused me pain because not all Christians give Mary the respect she deserves. Many protestant churches will pack Mary up in their Nativity scene after Christmas and then forget about her until next year!
