Save your money. Sounds like a good deal but isn't worth the trouble. After installing magicJack into my computer, the cops showed up at my house 3 times because the phone was ghost dialing 911. The only way to disable this was by changing my info with magicjack from my real address to a fictitious one 911 could not recognize. More recently, I have chosen to get a land line but wanted to keep my magicJack number. If you do this, know that magicJack will charge you over 30 bucks to port out!
WORD TO THE WISE--- DO NOT USE THE 911 FUNCTION REGARDLESS OF WHICH COUNTRY YOU ARE IN BECAUSE IT WILL SEND THE POLICE TO THE ADDRESS YOU REGISTERED THE MJ TO; happened to me this morning when a family member accidently hit 911 (from anaother country) and Police was at my door immediantly.
Other than needing a strong connection, it has saved me thousands of dollars during my travels abroad-- yes you can take it and use it almost anywhere on the planet- calling both to and from the US of A.
BUYER BEWARE!!!! I strongly advise everyone NOT to purchase a Magic Jack. For months, I have consistently had the same problem: making calls where the receiver could not hear me. (I could hear them, but they could not hear me). I chatted online with countless staff (too many times), in which I had to download software, run updates, change settings, only to find that the same problem would occur over and over again.
You get no refund, no replacement, no resolution... DON'T BUY IT!!!
Buyer Beware....I ordered Magic Jack Plus and the product was not delivered... They refuse to refund my money...The customer support is very poor and were totally unconcerned... I then started checking other experience with Magic Jack on the web...VERY POOR...Amazon has over 300 one star ratings...BUYER BEWARE

I am unable to use my computer when I talk because then the sound will lag, it is not much about the internet, but rather it is my computer. Pentium 4/D 512mb RAM, W7.

You can use it on different computers.
ATT before Magic Jack= $35, after magic jack= $15. I still wonder about my electricity bill
After 8 months I have only had one problem, and a droped call.
I have a 1 1/2 year old $300 Emachine (windows 7) computer and a cable internet connection and my 2 week old Magic Jack makes me happy. It drops calls sometimes and sometimes people complain a little about our connection but I'm saving $600 a year over a cable company phone service that was only a little better in quality.
PS That's true about not paying more phone bills, but if you have dsl, you will need to keep your landline or choose another type of service. I don't recommend using MJ with no other phone options because your computer may need to go into the shop or there are sometimes outages.. Been lucky for some time, but used to have a lot of outages, one lasted for 2 weeks before the techs w/my isp found the problem.
I have a fast computer and really like mine. I don't even have to bother to plug the phone in, use the ext cord so I can use the other USB ports. I just dial with the keypad. People can hear me fine and I can hear them, had to tweak a few things. I only got it for the occasional long distance calls I need to make but wanted to test out incoming. My son saw the regular number, have to dial that first then the number between the asterisks, don't dial those. So that works. No ads yet.
well I just thought I could plug it in-maybe it needs to be tweeked with a dual core, got on the other night and was more clear than the landline----even if I dont get it working right -40 bucks & I can be reached when my pay as I go runs out is worth having a1 minute line before it chops-I take it back what I said about jack for now
@4cClubT How bout you replace the computer running the magicJack and upgrade your internet connection. It's not the MJ. It's your computer's processor to blame, or the internet connection.

@luis6069 The information in this video is outdated. Do not return the MJ as it works very well and does have NC Area Codes. This video should be deleted, as it was from the early days of magicJack.
This is THE BEST !! , Bought it, installed it and using it now.....I'm saving over $1200.00 a year from switching from Verizon, they were raping me all this time.....that money is going to come in handy for vacation.
@joemusiclover your computer may be bs but the magicJack is not. If your computer is old, or you have a bad internet connection, of course you're going to have a sucky experience. All the MJ device does is store some software, and digitally connect your telephone to the computer. Your computer is responsible for the remaining tasks of running the software, along with placing/receiving calls. If the computer has a weak CPU, then it won't do a good job of encoding/decoding the sound information.
Service is good sounds clear and works better than a cell phone. I had too many dropped calls with my T Moble cell magic jack works better. I love not getting a cell phone bill. When I go out I have the freedom of people not calling like the burden of cell phone ownership. Saving $1500 a year is all that matters to me.
Free energy is finaly here! But some very powerfull ppl don't want you and me to be free from energy costs,Find the real deal, a free energy device at LT-MAGNET-MOTORdotCOM ,Let the revolution begin!
if I know my Magic Jack Sip Credentials (Proxy Username, Proxy address, and Proxypassword), would it be possible to make it work on a softphone app for the Iphone?
this little device works fine and eveyrthing. but its very very very very irritating !!!! i mean everytime im using my computer this shit pops out of nowhere like "claiming attention" lol. whether if somebody is using it or not. and its just annoying, very annoying....apart from that it wokrs fine i just that they should fix that little annoying issue
When I want to watch Youtube, Magic Jack interrupts my video. Fucking assholes. Can't they just call without the fucking Magic Jack interrupting my videos.
the trick to magic jack is you have to have a high speed internet connection to take full advantage of the capable quality it provides. I have cable that is equivilant to a T1 connection. I can attest, as of today, my first time using this device has been amazing. I have excellent line quality, crystal clear voice, and you also get free voicemail, 3 way calling, unlimited long distance and local, free 411, and many other features. I say for 20.00 dollars a year, I can live with any other flaws.
Magic crap is o.k. for a pinch. But the bandwidth lag is terrible, the help service sucks, if your question is to hard they cut the chat off, the real thing also that bugs the shit out of me is when the damm thing starts up, smack right in the middle of your fucking screen, but hey 20 bucks a year, guess you can expect some kinda shit.
Renewal is $39.95 per year not $19.95. The initial advertising is very misleading which I find unethical. The device works well so if you don't mind being lied to than this device is for you. For myself, I don't do business with liars.
Majic Jack is a fraud. They advertise free calling and its NOT FREE. Read thier terms before you purchase this useless low quality device (SECTION 6 in their terms). My internet speed is 15 megabits/sec yet the voice keeps cutting. They have the WORST customer and techincal support. STAY AWAY! They suspended my account and its irreversible I lost $60 a week after I activated the device :reason: They calim that i made more then 20% calls than the average cutomer. Filing FTC and BBB today.
I've had MJ for 6 months with no complaints whatsoever. The sound quality is good and I like that it has free long distance. I've read complaints that the customer service is bad and they charge for 2 years instead of 1. I haven't reached that point yet, i.e I've never needed customer support yet and I haven't had MJ a year yet. If I encounter the same problems I'd of course complain but so far, nothing to complain about.
if ur broke and cheap then get it....but if you want a real VOIP phone that acts like a real LAN line get Ooma phone. I had ooma for 2 years...never had any problems.
I want to Clone my Magic Jack to an SD CARD. so when I travel its easier to and smaller to take my Magic Jack with me. is it possibles. I have purchased the magic Jack already and have an account. is there a way to sign in to your account with your user name & password through a 3rd party software. I enjoy my Magic jack but don't like haling the big thing around . dose any body know how I could do it ????????????? Clone MAGIC JACK To SD CARD
Dont buy this product!!! This is the Worst product i have ever used!! It feature mediocre quality and very poor customer support!! The worst customer support available!! So do yourself a favor save the time and headache and dont buy this!!
We got MJ maybe a little over a Month ago. I like it so far. The only flaws is what a lot of People say is that you HAVE too keep your Computer on if you wanna make calls out. And this also happens for me, the Phone only rings from the Computer Speakers. So if I'm outside I won't hear it.
No the phone companies are not placing any nor do they have to. I have gone through 2 magic Jacks already and that is because they never work. any who reads this please do not waste your money on this it is a piece of equipment that breaks down or doesn't work at all. Magic Jack simply has problems. Power phone is what i heard a much better option and connects directly to your router. What a waste of my hard earned money. Please don't waste your money on this please! Really it doesn't work

@trunkbangking i don't like it cause it always has a pop up when someone calls... which is very annoying when using ur computer... I've had it for 2 years now.....
magicjack is a strip down version of phone service. it is not capable of sending or receiving any Fax transmissions. I had connected it to my fax machine but it did not work their customer service is not able to offer any help at this time . after about 2 years they still cannot transfer my phone number.
This thing is a piece of shit! I warn anyone who is even thinking of buying it, DO NOT DO IT! This multifunctional gadgetry has earned it's nick name Magic Jackoff.
I have been using magic jack for a year. I just placed another years subscription. Instead,...MJ charged me for 2 years. Theres repeated pop ups that comes onto the screen that tries to get you to join for 2, 5 etc years. They charged me for 2 when all i wanted was one. I contacted the CS. This is where the nightmare begin. One situation i read, a guy was continuously charged month every six months. The CS operates from a Chat window. There is nothing you can do once they have your money
lol magic jack is a nice product only problem is that THIS IS NOT supposed to replace ure real phone line cause u cant really receive calls cause ure magic jack number is a long distance so wen people from ure town try to call u well thats a pain . if u do alot of Long distance calls then its really awsome =D just tryed it like 15min ago and it works great u can also plug ure head set to the computer and speak from the computer IMAGINE GAMING WHILE CALLING SOMEONE XD
They will keep all your money! if you pay for any addition's you will loose your money if you get the same cracking and echo's I did. They have very slow customer service. Be prepared to spend at least an hour with a live chatting person if you have an issue. This will cost you more than you think.
Magic Jack needs about 35kbps of upload bandwidth for the person on the other end of the line to hear you. Otherwise you constantly cut out. Road Runner High Speed maxes out at a measly 60kbps. (fios would be nice...) Which means Magic Jack is using more than half the upload bandwidth. If you do torrenting this is an issue. Its best to have a router that has QoS. With QoS you can give Magic Jack priority over your bandwidth when it is in use.
One big problem with Magic Jack that will prove to be their downfall against new competition.
You MUST have a computer and it MUST be turned ON when you want to make or receive ANY calls. For international calls, each person you are calling MUST also have a Magic Jack to take your call and both of you MUST have your computers turned on every single time.
NC area codes are available now so this video is out of date. My specific town was not, however, but there were numbers for near by cities and the 911 feature should work fine if you follow the instructions right. I've had it for two days now and the clarity is amazing! I gave it a test call, 4 states away, and it was like the person on the other end was right next to me.
I was going to get a Beverly Hills number if there was no chance in getting a NC number but it didn't seem that any BH numbers were available. You also have the choice of getting a 'vanity' number, for ten extra dollars a year, where you can choose any ten digit number of your choice. Unfortunately for me, all of the unique numbers I thought of were already taken.
I opted to get the last 4 numbers of my choice for three extra dollars a year so I could pick a number that was easy to remember for me and people calling me. Overall this service is GREAT! I can't think of a better deal than to pay $23.00 a year for phone service with a unique number of my choice.
Just make sure you have high speed internet, a relatively new phone, your phone line is six feet (or shorter), and you keep your computer on when you need to make or receive calls. Even if your computer is off you will still receive voice mails forwarded to your email account that are in .wmv format. You could even save the voice mails to a folder if you wanted to after checking them and name them so they are easy to remember.
A smart set-up that I have come up with is to have a prepaid 'Go-Phone' for emergency calls (in case the power went out) and to use Skype for all international calls if you make a lot. Since Skype is free (if you use it on your computer to call other computers with Skype) than all you have to pay is the $20.00 yearly 'Magic Jack' bill, the amount of prepaid minutes you want and your set for all your calling needs.
My ONLY concern is 'security.' I read one blog stating that the military uses 'VoIP' to encrypt their calls in different methods. However, with VoIP being directly connected to my USB there is always a chance of my computer getting hacked and my conversations being intercepted. There is that same chance with land line phones and cell phones but I'm still concerned. If anyone knows anything about the security than please comment because I'm still researching it.
probably similar, but not the same. The last ad that I seen for Vonage was something like $25 a month. The magic jack is like 20-25 dollars a year. So, the back-end server hardware that routes all the phone calls can't be as good. With Vonage, you get more of a phone company like phone service. With magic jack, you get a start-up with a lot of computer hardware that has a phone network set-up to dial inputted customers numbers. Well, I assume that is how it works.
I believe in order to talk to someone in another country for free with the Magic Jack is to send a Magic Jack to that person and call them. The Magic Jack service comes with a U.S phone number so as long as you have a U.S phone number it is free regardless of where the Magic Jack resides.
Here's what's a little confusing for me. You need a high-speed internet for Magicjack to work, right? Don't you need an existing land line to get high-speed internet?
@YoohooCan You CAN choose an NC area code. My best friend has a 336 number. I have a Magic Jack and if you have good internet, voice quality is superb and voicemail is great too. It sends an email with the audio clip of the message attached! It even has the HOLD feature on the softphone (the phone on the computer) and it plays music so the caller is less likely to hang up. Great product so long as you have great internet! Considering buying a second!
Same here. I just bought a brand new wireless phone and my Magic Jack is in the mail and on it's way here. However, here is NC so I guess I'll be 'living in Beverly Hills' from now on. Maybe I'll think up some other interesting area code to add but on the site it does mention that you can change your number once without a charge and they are updating area codes constantly... If anyone else lives in NC and uses Magic Jack please drop a line and mention how it works for you.
MagicJack is only good if you're using in inside the US... otherwise its international calling plan sucks.... i called afghanistan and it cost me $5 for 14 minutes...
Yes, it costs money to dial outside of the US and Canada. But you can send a MagicJack to your intended party (assuming it's 1 person/family you usually call), and they can hook it up on their end and use a US phone number for it.
Good idea. I plan on using my Magic Jack for most of my calls in the supported areas, a Go Phone for emergencies (in case my internet goes down or there is a storm and I may need to call 911), and Skype to talk to people internationally. Sending one to someone who may be stationed overseas or a relative and getting a US area code is a smart idea.
DO NOT PURCHASE MAGICJACK it is not worhtit. Been dealing with their Tech Support for 2 months and they could not solve the problem, my issue was i cannot call some area in Canada, they claimed from their ads and website that ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS PICK UP YOUR PHONE AND DIAL...WELL THATS A LIE, so please be carefull. Also if your computer is connected to a network, hone or office then most likely you will have a problem, also if you have a Firewall then that is another problem, DO NOT BUY!
Astroturfing has really gotten to a whole new level. I know a guy who works for those people and he gets sent memos telling them to go onto websites posting positive feedback for that crap.
You got your opinions. But actually. It's not a piece of shit. I have one. It works perfectly. I am not sure why it doesn't work for you. But here is what I got to say. It's not a hoax. It works. It worked perfectly! Too bad it didn't worked for you that good. I love the product though.
I have owned one for about a year now so I would say I'm a pretty good judge on it's use.
If you are surfing the net at the same time as using the phone then it's going to have a little static on it when making calls. But if you close your browsers and use only the phone then the call is clear as a bell, even long distance.
I have called people all over the US and never had a problem. So if you have high speed cable internet, then get a Magic Jack. Also their customer service is 2nd to none.
Dude Magic Jack, Jacked me up. I didnt trust it and still dont. Has anybody ever heard of Phone Power? Its like Phone voip. Me and my family are ready to switch over. Magic Jack is not reliable, we paid for a 5 year plan, and we cant make outgoing calls. We called them, read the site, and still..we are in a sticky situation. Can somebody help me? Like is phone power more reliable then Magic Jack? It feels like they jacked me of my money.
I like my magic jack,I use it to call my friends and relatives in the US. But sometimes it gets really laggy and either I or the person I'm talking to can't hear me. It's great but we pay our monthly phone and internet bills anyway so skype, msn, aim really is no different, the magic jack just allows you to call them without having to ask them to go online.
Just use gmail or google phone if you have Internet. Free.

the trick to magic jack is you have to have a high speed internet connection to take full advantage of the capable quality it provides.
DonBell2007 1 year ago

Has anyone tried to return this thing? CAUTION!
They will keep all your money! if you pay for any addition's you will loose your money if you get the same cracking and echo's I did. They have very slow customer service. Be prepared to spend at least an hour with a live chatting person if you have an issue. This will cost you more than you think.
plagick 2 years ago
Magic Jack needs about 35kbps of upload bandwidth for the person on the other end of the line to hear you. Otherwise you constantly cut out. Road Runner High Speed maxes out at a measly 60kbps. (fios would be nice...) Which means Magic Jack is using more than half the upload bandwidth. If you do torrenting this is an issue. Its best to have a router that has QoS. With QoS you can give Magic Jack priority over your bandwidth when it is in use.
gorescam 2 years ago
lol that means u can USE MAGIC JACK WITH DIAL UP ?? XD
ControlUreFeelings 1 year ago
One big problem with Magic Jack that will prove to be their downfall against new competition.
You MUST have a computer and it MUST be turned ON when you want to make or receive ANY calls. For international calls, each person you are calling MUST also have a Magic Jack to take your call and both of you MUST have your computers turned on every single time.
Enter OOMA.
One time $249. No pc needed, no hassles.
Magic Jack is the Vonage killer.
But now OOMA is the Magic Jack killer.

TheBlacKRosEjeDi 2 years ago
I was going to get a Beverly Hills number if there was no chance in getting a NC number but it didn't seem that any BH numbers were available. You also have the choice of getting a 'vanity' number, for ten extra dollars a year, where you can choose any ten digit number of your choice. Unfortunately for me, all of the unique numbers I thought of were already taken.
TheBlacKRosEjeDi 2 years ago
I opted to get the last 4 numbers of my choice for three extra dollars a year so I could pick a number that was easy to remember for me and people calling me. Overall this service is GREAT! I can't think of a better deal than to pay $23.00 a year for phone service with a unique number of my choice.
TheBlacKRosEjeDi 2 years ago
Just make sure you have high speed internet, a relatively new phone, your phone line is six feet (or shorter), and you keep your computer on when you need to make or receive calls. Even if your computer is off you will still receive voice mails forwarded to your email account that are in .wmv format. You could even save the voice mails to a folder if you wanted to after checking them and name them so they are easy to remember.
TheBlacKRosEjeDi 2 years ago
A smart set-up that I have come up with is to have a prepaid 'Go-Phone' for emergency calls (in case the power went out) and to use Skype for all international calls if you make a lot. Since Skype is free (if you use it on your computer to call other computers with Skype) than all you have to pay is the $20.00 yearly 'Magic Jack' bill, the amount of prepaid minutes you want and your set for all your calling needs.
TheBlacKRosEjeDi 2 years ago
My ONLY concern is 'security.' I read one blog stating that the military uses 'VoIP' to encrypt their calls in different methods. However, with VoIP being directly connected to my USB there is always a chance of my computer getting hacked and my conversations being intercepted. There is that same chance with land line phones and cell phones but I'm still concerned. If anyone knows anything about the security than please comment because I'm still researching it.

isn't the same kind of service Vonage provides??
latinourbano 2 years ago
probably similar, but not the same.

Does this works to call an Asian country for free?
Balut01210 2 years ago
I believe in order to talk to someone in another country for free with the Magic Jack is to send a Magic Jack to that person and call them. The Magic Jack service comes with a U.S phone number so as long as you have a U.S phone number it is free regardless of where the Magic Jack resides.

Wow, No NC Area Codes? WHYS IT GOTTA BE MY STATE?
YoohooCan 2 years ago
@YoohooCan You CAN choose an NC area code. My best friend has a 336 number. I have a Magic Jack and if you have good internet, voice quality is superb and voicemail is great too. It sends an email with the audio clip of the message attached! It even has the HOLD feature on the softphone (the phone on the computer) and it plays music so the caller is less likely to hang up. Great product so long as you have great internet! Considering buying a second!
speedn2007 2 years ago

Yes you can, but they do come at a fee. We just got ours and I did see that info.
jedijoe1976 2 years ago
Yes, it costs money to dial outside of the US and Canada. But you can send a MagicJack to your intended party (assuming it's 1 person/family you usually call), and they can hook it up on their end and use a US phone number for it.
drego5 2 years ago

Are you sure about that? I mean, it's not perfect, but it's worked pretty well for me. I make calls all the time and no problems.
When I used it with a wireless connection, I could the other end perfectly, but I was told that there were a few static pops on my end.
Overall, I'd have to give it a B+.
JeoMummy 2 years ago
I have owned one for about a year now so I would say I'm a pretty good judge on it's use.
If you are surfing the net at the same time as using the phone then it's going to have a little static on it when making calls. But if you close your browsers and use only the phone then the call is clear as a bell, even long distance.
I have called people all over the US and never had a problem. So if you have high speed cable internet, then get a Magic Jack. Also their customer service is 2nd to none.
