That is Paula Sands on KWQC, Davenport. The TV station, which was known as WOC-TV, (World of Chiropractic) was part of Palmer Broadcasting that was owned by B.J. and Mable Palmer. B.J.'s Father, D.D., discovered chiropractic. When Dave Palmer, B.J.'s son, died, his daughters got the broadcast properties, WHO Radio and TV in Des Moines, and WOC Radio and TV in Davenport. One daughter took the radio properties and the other took the TV properties. They have since been sold.
this is a sad physical manifestation of a misunderstood idea... like Sigafoose has said: "actions follow thought, and what you think can in fact affect the tissue cells in someone else's body."
has every intitution in this country become corrupted? so what was the fountainhead of genuine chiropractic has now turned into a stinking physiotherapy school, a kindergarten for medical wannabees stocked with useless therapy toys to play with? it's enough to make you blow lunch!
@hiodr I think so. Look at leadership.at Palmer I doubt any have actually adjusted real people. Good thing about the video is that they can't hide the BS.
I never thought there would be a day when a segment on Paula Sands Live (of all things!) would cause such a controversy! As an employee for more than 13 years at Palmer and a life-time native of the Quad Cities, it upsets me that so many people have taken this out of context ... and it's Paula Sands! It's not like this was on a highly reputable program.
As long as we have the same old dogma being spewed by the fanatics, we will always remain in the shadows. PT and chiropractic are not so differerent and work well together. To adjust without acive care is criminal IMO. We should be advocating self promotion to ones health, not multiple visits and dependancy. Get with the 21st century, read the research and learn the truth. Or is that being too educated for a chriopracTOR?
Chilkatman has a good point. PT and chiropractic are completely different. PT´s should not adjust and chiropractors should not use physiotherapy. And by the way, chiropractors have much more training than PTs. PTs may be at more sports events, but chiropractic is not about treating sports injuries. Chiropractic is about improving the expression of health via the nervous system by removing subluxations (i.e. interference.)
Wow I did not know there was a health Spa on Brady Street in Davenport. Ir looks like a really nice Spa! I like the theme of the spa. You know how all the spa people dress up as doctors. It is a nice twist.
Funny, in America, Chiropractic existed as a profession BEFORE P.T. BJ Palmer used and taught physical therapy, as a necessary component to his chiropractic adjustments. Legalized and organized PT came about in the mid 1920's due to the polio epidemic. Chiropractic has been around since the late 1890's, as a response to the murderous and addicting trends of "medicine" in the mid 1800's. I wonder WHO influenced who? The chicken or the egg huh?!
Funny. Chiropractic existed as an organized and Licensed profession BEFORE PT. BJ had a more organized and implemented PT program in his Chiropractic School, than most PT's had in the US. PT came about in the mid to early 1920's due to the polio outbrake, Chiropractic has been around since the late 1890's. Hum, who influenced who, the chicken or the egg.
This is not true. Not true at all. I suggest you go into the Palmer archives and read exactly in what context things were done and what was done. What you have stated is a popular fallacy that is not grounded in truth.. BJ never ever taught PT and PT has been around longer than the 20s it was under a different name.
That is untrue. It is false that BJ had a "PT" department. Totally untrue. And even 25 years ago when I graduated PCC did not have PT in the clinic. And the joke about this is that these people obviously don't know what they are doing. They make it look like a health spa. If they want to do PT they should take some lessons from national. national would never present itself like a "spa". Oh and I hold a degree from National as well. But this is really bad. Believe me this is a joke.
I'd rather by-pass the DC office and go right to a DPT for manual therapy or perhaps go to a DO for OMT. I've never seen a PT or a DO at a shopping mall doing screenings, but have seen PT offices at athletic events doing post-event therapies--never a DC though.
Actually virtually all of PT has no scientific studies behind it. None of the modalities are researched that they use. Despite this PTs help people greatly and chiros that practice correctly do too. But PT is not all that evidence based. There just ar not studies proving most methods. That is not to knock PTs but to set the record straight. If PT was to be evidence based they would throw out virtually all their machines and rehab methods. And a good DC school is more intensive than PT
Does any body know where I can get the references for the quotes used by D.D. Palmer and B.J. Palmer? Obviously from the green books but which volumes and pages?
OH my God that was funny and so TRUE...god forbid they actually show a chiropractic adjustment..The Fountainhead has become the THE FOUNTAIN HEAD OF SELLING OUT now. I felt the same way about that photo you posted on here with the guy in jail..we are totally crapping on them anymore..well now we..but the Physical Medical Chiropractors out there..what BJ called MEDIPRACTORS...STOP BASTARDIZING THE PROFESSION..just get out and call it by its real name..ORTHOPEDIC MEDICINE
This video was not produced by Palmer; it was produced by Paula Sands Live. How they edit and "spin" the content is in no way controlled by Palmer. Apparently the PSL people thought the rehabilitation department was more interesting visually and focused on it.
This video is not showing a bastadization of chiropractic--it is merely a local afternoon program. If you want to see what Palmer is really doing, check out their channel PalmerVideo.
Not even a setup? It's the schools that perpetrated the chiropractic sell out! I'm sure any doc on that campus would have demonstrated some form of an adjustment. Gonstead perfected DD's vision but BJ's ego contended with this UNDISPUTED MASTER OF CHIROPRACTIC and the profession continues to suffer. Continue teaching less evolved techniques(that were needed to pioneer perfection, but should have been discarded long ago like bloodletting)and next thing you know "it all works". Damn shame, Palmer.
Very funny video... "this is like a spa"... then the music. I see NOTHING wrong with Palmer's new building. What did you expect... Palmer to stay in dark ages with the other Chiropractic schools?
That guy getting his foot worked on (by intern B-rad) is Mr. Spinal Anatomy himself. Very good, but very tough teacher and the reason many scurry to the other chiropractic schools for a year or so and then come back. Hmmm... wonder why?
c'mon now, it ain't THAT bad, is it? First speak the language you have in common...
That other stuff works a little, so there's no reason to be scared of it. I mean, there's no question that the most powerful tool at the office is the chiropractic adjustment, right? It's like the computer getting jealous of the quill, a chiropractor getting jealous of ultrasound.
It is a sad day when you find this at the "fountainhead". I wonder what these mixers are going to do when the PT's(who are docs now and have portal of entry status by the way) and physiatrists come in and clean their clocks. Who do you think is going to win that one? PT's and Physiatrists or DC's pretending to be PT's.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Good for Palmer. I'm currently a student at Life (and trying to transfer to Palmer) and am sick and tired of traditionalist students who are resistant to change and turning chiropractic into a cult. Our goals as chiropractors is to help patients. There is absolutely nothing wrong with expanding our area of practice and incorporating technology.
You're right - there is nothing wrong with incorporating technology - all of the thermal technology is absolutely incredible at finding the EXACT location of the subluxations. That kind of technology is phenomenal for what we do as chiropractors.
As for foot massage and ultrasound, those aren't Chiropractic and never will be. Those are therapeutic modalities that have nothing to do with the correction of subluxations. They're just good reasons to bill insurance for an easy buck.
I say you just skip Palmer (because I think there still a few principled chiropracTORS out there) and head straight for National!
You're doing a great job advocating modalities in the chiropractic office! Grab your super-slick white lab coat and stethoscope, it's time for a trip to the cliropracktor! hahaha give me a break. I loves when he plugs that thingy into the wall and stimulates me!
NO. ADJUST SPINES AND LIVE A HEALTHY LIFE WITH YOUR PATIENTS. IT'S THE PURPOSE OF THE CHIROPRACTOR.
Adjust spines, yes. But keep in mind things like massage, PT help THE PATIENT. There is a reason why schools are heading in this direction. Because it helps the patient. They're trying to improve chiropractic and do what's best for the patient.
I'm sure attacking people just because they have an open mind about the future of chiropractic gives our profession a great reputation. Shame on all you narrow minded, hateful people.
Chiropractic is not about pain and injury. Surely PT and massage help THE PATIENT, but they don't belong in the chiropractic office.
Chiropractic is about acquiring and maintaining health for life, not about fixing a transient problem. Educate your patients about the benefits of staying adjusted in terms of their overall well-being, not in terms of what is ailing them at that particular moment in time.
Chiropractors do no treat effects - they Affect causes.
OMG. I used to think Palmer was the centre of chiropractic....NOT ANYMORE! Chiropractic means to "do by hand"....not with an ultrasound! There is NO NEED to incorporate "technology" because chiropractic (ie spinal adjustments) work! It's pretty simple....remove nerve interference by correcting the subluxation. That is what chiropractic is and always has been. If you want to fluff the patient and make them feel all warm and fuzzy inside....go be a physio!
If it was "easy" why do I have 8 years of schooling ahead of me before I get to help people the way my chiropractor helped me! I wish I could just skip to being an awesome person like a chiropractor and start making people feel as good as I do! =D CHIROPRACTIC FOR LIFE!!!
Obviously, you are extremely uneducated in the teachings at Palmer. Anyone with half of a brain would realize that this is just a bad interview/video/tour.
Palmer is the heart and soul of chiropractic. If they choose to teach SOME therapy/rehab, then so be it. What is wrong with learning? The students don't HAVE to use it if they do not choose.
Actually, I visited Palmer when I decided to become a DC (back in ~2003 I think - Riekeman was still president), and I really liked what they were doing. It wasn't PI based, and they were actually teaching philosophy! (Imagine that! Remember when they said they didn't want David Koch (one of the top philosophers and propagators of BJ's work?) to teach Palmer philosophy at Palmer?) But things at Palmer have changed. It USED to be the heart and soul of ChiropracTIC, but how things have changed
Yeah..go to Life..the faculty there are ecstatic about how they're treated and wonderfully excited to be there, operating day in and day out without fear mandates from a one sided administration. Do your homework man! A disenchanted and disgruntled faculty at a college is never a good thing!
I graduated PCC in 1994. Not real proud at the time and so disgusted with the direction of the profession I am now a Spinologist. Closer to the beginnings by objective and pricniples and gets to the basic message the the nerve system is the master and nothing else matters.
I would suggest going to Life Atlanta, Life West or Sherman. If you want real training to be a Chiropractor I would not suggest Palmer at this time.
If you are a Palmer alumni you may want to reconsider giving any money to the college.
In class yesterday, a teacher said that being specific did not matter in adjusting. We also have a rad teacher that said it would be good if Chiropractors could prescribe medicine (anti-inflammatory).
Actually, I think that is a great reason to RECOMMEND the school. It is good to hear that more of the chiropractic colleges are moving toward modern training methods.
Actually, I'm in the process of doing that right now. I finish the program in March, and I can't wait: Cash business, no insurance to mess with, still set my own hours...it'll be a dream retirement job. Three massages per day, then go play golf.
Thanks for the offer, but I plan to continue renting my space to a couple of chiropractors.
Amen, brother. I've been a practicing DC since graduating from PCC Davenport 20 years ago, and I've always felt that a good massage therapist will help more people than an average chiropractor. I do muscle therapy, by hand, on every patient I treat.
Stop the infighting and concentrate on making patients better. For inspiration, I suggest that you enter the Memorial building from the Brady Street entrance and look at the D.D Palmer plaque in the entryway. My favorite quote in the world is on that plaque. Read it, memorize it, and live by it.
On that note, Rollergirl, put your money where your mouth is, and post a link to the peer-reviewed journal articles describing the harm of ultrasound to the unborn. I'd also like to read the article about harmful stim.
The problem with chiropractic is not it's lack of philosophy. It's people making wild accusations and claims with nothing to back them up. Now, recognize that most chiropractors do not do this, but take a look at the postings here, and you will see what's wrong. Does anyone here think that this appalling public bickering is an asset to the profession?
If I was prospective chiropractic patient and happened upon this thread, I would be completely turned off by all the bickering and unprofessional banter. The video wouldn't make that much of a difference to me, but the name calling and rants would. I'm glad I'm already a chiropractic patient and know the benefits.
Just to clear things up about this possibility that Paula edited out the chiropractic content: she didn't. She personally stated that no editing was done. The show is aired in an "as live" style and the raw version is the same as the one that aired.
Dr. Wood I blame you for all of this. Part of your job is to do the proper PR for the school, the clinic, and the profession. You have failed. Altough you have succeded to make our school look like a PT school, our clinic look like a freaking day spa, and our profession look like we all went to national.
At least national would not make their clinic look like a day spa. They would at least look like they were doctors. Wood did not make the clinic look like a day spa. At a PT school things appear serious and clinical. This video looks like just as you said. A day spa. The real fault in this is not wood. He is a pupet. It the people who control the scholl who in fact are not chiropractors. It is sad when a Palmer family member screws chiropractic.
I'm sure they still learn to adjust at Palmer. What people are upset about is that this is Palmer...the Fountainhead...and they say the word chiropractic what?...once?? And then when the guy says the word "adjustment" it's almost with disdain in his voice like he's embarrassed to be associated with adjusting. That's what people are upset about.
I, too, am upset about that ericjaszewski.I think Palmer could have handled it better. I have heard that originally there was over 100 mins of footage which got edited and cut down to a fraction of what was said and done overall! Thanks Paula and KWQC!Not to let Wood/Owens/Johnson off the hook, but its a part of what went wrong.
For crying out loud - QUIT already. If anyone wants to know what is really happening at Palmer, search YouTube for "Palmer College" and watch the vidoe "Why should you go to Palmer". You will see students doing what they do EVERY DAY - learning to ADJUST!!!!
Sorry...you're mistaken. Students do learn Palmer Gonstead, Diversified, PUCS, Thompson, and Extremity adjusting from some very dedicated faculty. They are held to that standard in the clinic system. You're right..some always will choose instrument assisted adjusting..but do you want someone who is awful with their hands adjusting you? It takes all kinds to make the profession complete.
Apparently you have never bothered to get to know the president of PCC or you wouldn't make such a ridiculous statement. He is more of a chiropractor than you can ever HOPE to be. BTW, does "docrock321" mean you are a D.O. who is a crock?
So Julie Johnson...this was your idea to begin with...what are you and SPEAK gonna do to undo Wood's misrepresentation of this facility and profession????
When you all are "DOCTORS" you sure as hell will bill all these therapies to make money...so do not EVEN EVEN make your comments....you bill ultra sound, hydro therapy, massage.....do not even start.....trust me I have been royally taken to the cleaners by a "DC."
Well laurelgreyt, since you've been taken to the cleaners by a DC...then they must all do the same thing. No chance there might exist some more principled DC's out there?!?!? Hmmm...seen one...seen 'em all huh?! Cool...sounds like a good outlook on life in general!! LOL!
Taken to the cleaners in the sense that I have worked under a DCand you know..know..that when you practice one day....you may or may not..bill for therapises that the sports rehab clinic offers..you know SOME of us are ATHLETES...and we do not just need "ADJUSTED"...but a combination of therapies.....I PRAISE CHIROS...for all my success in athletics.....I believe in what you do.HUGE!! I support Chiropractice..recommend it to my patients and believe in my heart that what you do..is AMAZING
I can understand where inconsistent business practices take place....Thanks for the kudos and please remember, we're not all alike. Just like in any other health care profession, there will always exist different "shcools of thought".
elaborate....what do you mean "taken to the cleaners". you mean ripped off right? how did he rip you off? If he ripped you off by throwing you on a million bogus modalities like the ones featured in this video than im terribly sorry for him. But i have to say i don't appreciate you telling me that I'm gonna rip people off once i graduate. obviously you don't know much about chiropractic and you definitly don't know anything about me.
if that does not apply to you......THEN AWESOME....BE FLIPPING AMAZING...and set a standard....I have insurace staements.....that show billing for RIDICULOUS THINGS......RICDICULOUS....which meant for me.....the care I needed turned into out of pocket....which is NOW okay..becasue I believe in Chiropractic...you wait.
This is really sad. What would BJ say if he saw this? I am not going to spout a bunch of dogma about the chiropractic adjustment. These people don't know any better, that's what's sad. If that guy had given or received one REAL adjustment in his life, he wouldn't be saying these things. Have a little pride in what you do, and if you're coming to chiropractic school just to be a doctor, don't bother! We have enough slackers and valedictorians!
PS: Could they have gotten a spokesperson who knew what chiropractic was? Or at least one who could explain that which he is being interviewed? "This helps ... ehhhh...uhm, tendonitis...uh I think". Cue cards or something? Whadda tool.
why is chiropractic doomed? The fact that many DCs practice chiropractic with adjunct therapies doesn't doom chiropractic. We just can't shy away from glorifying the wonderful spinal adjustment. Nothing wrong with a little Graston here and there. Patients need to know that what does the most important changes is the adjustment.
Chiropractic is exactly where it's schools and practioners want it to be - in the medical camp. There is no uniqueness. Chiropractic competes with personal trainers, PT's and massage therapists who all do a better job in the therapy arena. Chiropractic is doomed. What a terrible shame. Can't say we didn't expect it. It has been going in this direction for a long time. Thanks Palmer!
Great video! I laughed so hard I cried at least I think that's why I'm crying...
If Palmer can't communicate chiropractic to a news crew, no wonder enrollments down and so many new docs are lost. They can't sell chiropractic, but spinal decompression, cold laser, ultra sound, etc... no problem!
So Kurt Wood...are you proud of the picture you and Paula have painted? Thanks for leaving the adjustment out. I hope you've learned that this institution and its patrons can benefit from the ancillary stuff...BUT...without Chiropractic as its foundation it is all worthless. Please do a better job of representing my profession and my institution.
I think that the idea that he was trying to get across about the new facility was achieved, which was we can and do more than just "adjust", but he forgot that not everyone is a Chiropractic student, therefore the message was not well thought out. DC's do however need to learn from this and realize that we are not yet where we need to be on patient/general public education on what Chiropractic is. We know, but do people who have never been exposed know??? This is where the interview went wrong.
We who are in the Chiropractic field understand that PT can/is part of our job and our patients' health. The problem is when it comes to the general public who has no understanding what Chiropractic is and what the benefits are. This interview showed rehab ideas, which can/is part of Chiropractic care.
The benefits of chiropractic are immense and inescapable, but the editor of this video seems more willing to treat a philosophy than he is a patient. You simply cannot decry medical orthodoxy with your own version of it.
I don't think that that's the point he was trying to make. Obviously PT is a part of our profession and using it is to the benefit of our patients. The author was just throwing a little too much philosophy in it for the general population of chiropractors. But the fact that the college is able to put garbage like this on TV when we have a clinic full of chiropractors, not just a rehab facility was just plain stupid. Talk about adjusting too, fools!
palmer college of therapeutics and fringe medicine. to label the scientific work of our predecessors as quasi-religion is supercilious blather. the elegance and efficacy of specific chiropractic is irreplaceable. even if your clinical goals are pain amelioration and improved range of motion, try embracing real chiropractic. specific, CONSERVATIVELY APPLIED, cause-and-effect chiropractic. those who dedicate themselves to this work see sick get well.
I have made my point and so far, noone has been able to pose a coherent argument against it. I will not continue to post. Perhaps the profession needs to split into two. One for Chiropractic Physicians, and another for Spinal Hygenists. Call me "medipractor" all you want. To the people that matter, I am a real doctor who can do all you can, as well or better than you... and more.
Well said, I'll send you my next patient that needs his/her groin taped, but for now, why don't you let us REAL Chiropractors handle those nagging subluxations that disrupt progress on your stretching and e-stim therapy.
some credit must be given to those that edited this piece for television. i doubt that those in charge at palmer would argue with the point the video has made. how about show the general public what an adjustment is about? when it comes down to it, the administration doesn't care about what the students or alumni think. they need to wake up, because palmer is mostly tuition driven and they aren't paying attention to what any of us are saying about the direction they are leading this school.
Ultrasound/e-stim are NOT good. I will not use, EVER. Ultrasound has been shown to be harmful to babies in the womb. Putting that kind of foreign energy into your body doesnt ride with "do no harm." Same for e-stim. The thing is plugged into the wall. It's like taking pain meds, it doesn't fix anything.
YOU MORON! The issue is that there was a prime opportunity to show off chiropractic and that wasnt done. Only modalities and symptom relief were shown. Chiropractic is about addressing the root problem and "...correcting the CAUSE of disease." Yes these PT procedures are ancillary but someone would not understand that after watching this video. This makes the adjustment look ancillary. The irony is that you are arguing for the symptom of this video and not looking at the real problem.
What if I am getting great results from my adjusting, and even better results when incorporating Myofascial release, Graston, PIR, F&D, and ancillary therapies. What if I learn these things AND start adjusting in 2nd trimester during chiro college? yes... you are right, That MUST be the wrong way. I will go flog myself now on my knees in front of a pic of BJ.
I agree with you that PT does help a lot for patient rehab... But a CHIROPRACTIC college should promote chiropractic and not PT. It is just common sense.
And Palmer, of all schools, *IS* the one that does. The outcry from a vocal minority (and the author of this "commented on" video) is not showing the confidence that those of us that know the value of chiropractic. That value is not in any way diminished here. The outcry is quasi-religious in it's intolerance, not representative of the profession as a whole and not becoming of Doctors/Physicians.
Do you see a problem with students getting credits for "not adjusting"? Do you think that helps them become proficient? Is that not worthy of "outcry" from the profession...after all...YOU have to call them your colleagues?!? How about students being taught a solid set of skills and then they're abondoned in the clinic system? Worthy of "outcry"? Only weakens the "quality of doctor" Palmer graduates if you ask me. You're dang right I'm going to intolerant of that!
Things other than an adjustment are NOT things of Chiropractic-but ARE things of healers. This expensive, high-tech equipment is nonsense though. We have everything we need in our HANDS. For instance, I reset the sensory nervous system. Originally, this was taught to me using cold laser(one of the only gadgets I would recommend) I just use my hands. Test results shown through AK. This does WONDERS with my patients.
It looks like a PT clinic with lots of wasted space. PT is for REHAB for things like blown knees, knee surgery, broken ankles....Thats it. Pretty sad that they didn't even show the adjustment. Looks like Palmer was bought out by the medical community. Shame.
Does anyone else cringe when they get grouped in with the term "Chiropractic Physician?" You can just call me a chiropractor, I don't need the self-esteem boost of trying to look like a psuedo-medical doctor, I'm proud of what I do.
Actually, YOU don't know what you are talking about. You used to only get a handful of credits from outreach/clinic abroad. But now students are able to get as many adjusting credits from clinic abroad as patients that they adjust.
Wow... you guys really don't get it do you. NONE of this devalues the power of an adjustment. Please stop being so insecure. Thankfully, the majority of the profession (ie. chiropractors) are not so dogmatic about the use of ancillary therapies.
Some "doctors" at the new "Pisciottano Hall" (former Palmer Clinic) do not understand the power of a chiropractic adjustment. Every day in my practice I see people re-gaining their health through chiropractic adjustments. Sadly, some students graduating from Palmer "Physical Therapy" College will never experience such joy their lives.
How about you settle for "a second-rate hack who likes to rip off his patients." If you aren't getting any results from your adjusting, you probably suck as a chiropractor, you should go work in the new clinic, they'll welcome you with open arms.
Or how about the fact that they don't even have to get any of thier credits from the clinic anymore. They can now get all of their adjusting creits from clinic abroad, so all of the palmer grads will now be getting their clnical education from a two week trip to brazil...very sad
Hey, chirokern, what trimesters do they teach graston, spinal decompression, and digital spinography in....OH WAIT...they DON'T! Sounds like a liability to me........
It would be a liability if those techniques did anything, but they don't so they might as well start blowing smoke onto their patients and singing ancient healing rituals to them. This is what happens when the person running all three colleges is a business man, NOT a chiropractor.
I guess the news always air what they want and put their spin on things. I just think that this is sad that they dont tell about the Chiropractic side of the school, that is what the core of the school is all about, and I hope that it does not change!
This makes me sick! What about the founding principals? Some of this would be good, but where are we? At Palmer, the founder of Chiropractic. Where is the part they talk about adjusting the spine? What is Chiropractic? All about the hot or cold baths? About the foot massage? Come on now, what is our profession coming to?
Poor representation of a fine new CHIROPRACTIC clinic. They actually toured the ENTIRE clinic. Unfortunately, what was aired was 95% PT and rehab when the clinic itself is actually 95% adjusting rooms, physical exam rooms, and x-ray. I think it's great that the clinic does have such a nice rehab dept for students to utilize if they so choose; I am just very disappointed that this dept got most of the attention in a segment that could have promoted a great CHIROPRACTIC facility.
I really do wish that they would have focused more on the adjustment, as it truly is the cornerstone of what we do. I can't help but wonder if they edited it out? As far as the rehab center is concerned, it looks very nice and modern...which, like it or not, is impressive to people who may be prospective patients.
Guys... the original airing of this was on a local Iowa TV station. Do you think that anyone in Davenport doesn't know what they DO at Palmer? How many DC's are there in Davenport? There was no need to focus on the adjustment or set someone up on a knee chest table or do an HIO toggle...
Are you kidding me...people in the QCA think they can come to Palmer to get a massage...and that's coming from someone who has lived here for 15 years as a practitioner. If people knew what Palmer is/was and the power of the adjustment, there'd be a LINE at teh new AHC...right now it's tumble weeds...
As far as the video, I think it's one thing for Palmer College to utilize adjunctive therapies to satisfy CCE or NBCE requirements, but to openly embrace and emphasize it on a local news story is just completely contradictory to the foundation the school was built upon.
Palmer College is realizing that in order to be called "doctors" students need to learn and grow. Even BJ used the most modern tools he could incorporate. There is nothing wrong with what they are doing other than old graduates believing what they were told about why they weren't being taught these skills.
Where did you get the idea that all chiropractors who are wellness minded utilize a "Flying 7" type adjusting protocol, no objective findings, and spend only 4 minutes per patient? In my experience, that is definitely not the case. I personally use no physiotheraphy modalities and spend a lengthy and quality amount of time with each and every one of my patients in an open healing room adjusting framework.
Not all chiropractors use the "flying 7"... many do. Some have rooms with a row of adjusting tables and run along "adjusting" them either by hand or with an instrument. I am in no way saying that wellness = flying 7. But look around... we all know that they are out there.
Wow, I am speechless. Just what the world needs is more Medi-practors, and for those of you who think the founding fathers would not be rolling over in their graves are in the wrong profession! We cry over other professions crossing our boundaries but it seems to be okay for us to wonder wherever we want...please! What is happening here! No wonder the world is confused...look at what they see!
What the world does need is chiropractors who are willing to advance the profession without losing their identity. Not "hygenists" who want to ignore anatomy and science while quoting the green books and treating chiropractic like a religion.
Harvard is teaching SMT now to MDs and DOs, PTs can do SMT. Some of the best studies on what adjusting can do for NON MSC problems are coming out of NON-DC areas (DO/PT) what do you think will happen if we sit back? Chiropractic as it grows will include everything outside of drugs and surgery to get patients well. DCs are position to be the *health* care leaders in the future. Step up to the plate and grow with the profession! If you don't, then you are only a chiropractic hygenist.
You contradict yourself here. If non-DC are realizing how great the adjust is for Non MSC probs, how does it makes us "healthcare" leaders by embracing and promoting the "their" modalities? Chiropractic is NO LONGER separate and distinct and therefore is redundant. The maketplace WILL NOT support redundancy.
I help sick people get well everyday with the adjustment. What the hell are the schools teaching these kids now days? We need to put a stop to this...stop donating to these colleges..they will make the profession extinct!
Where should chiropractic draw the line at "doing whatever it takes to get the pt better"? Can we incorporate whatever we want, but no one else can "adjust"? can't have it both ways!
I think that new rehab center is great, Its my opinion that Pt is an excellent compliment to the "Treatment" the adjustment that is. They very well may have included that portion of care but it may have been edited out. Or maybee it did not.
Glad to see that Palmer is finally showing their docs not only the power of the adjustment, but the power of modlities... do whatever it takes to get the patient better.
To those of you who think that DD and BJ would turn over in their graves... go back and read the green books. You might learn something! Then again, you also might have to revamp your flying 7 "wellness" contract practices.
Whatever it takes? I'll tell you what it takes. How about "one adjustment ('the adjustment with that extra something') of specific character, at one place,... having a staying-put value." Let's try that before we hand out luxurious spa treatments and pedicures. Meanwhile, I think I'll go crack open a green book and learn more about the "power of modalities."

It is things like this video and these comments that slows down the progress of the professions growth. I regret that I went to Palmer instead of National, but at least with the Palmer Research facility and now a new rehab department, they are finally entering the 21st century. If we don't stop treating our profession as a religion, and start treating it as a health care PROFESSION, we will go into a slow and steady decline.
It has nothing to do with an identity crisis. It has to do with growing as a profession. If you want to be a flying 7 hygenist and see a patient every 4 minutes while selling someone a "wellness" package, feel free. With that mindset, our profession will be nothing but glorified massage therapy in 10 years.
Growth is all well and good, but uncontrolled growth is called cancer. I prefer to think of this video as helping to guide the evolution of Chiropractic by steering it onto a vitalistic path. Vitalism is not a religion, merely a philosophical point of view with a sound basis in reason.
Therapies, and treatments, but where is chiropractic in all this nonsense? What can these medi-quacks do to save this subluxated world of ours? This video is sick, sick, sick. Thank goodness for the rebirth of Life University.
This is sad, DD, BJ, and Barge are sitting down to have a long round of drinks right now. I hope they can drown their sorrows. This is a sad day for Palmer. I would hope that any true ChiropracTOR would cut their funding to Palmer immediately. Without a lifeline weasels with sink and drown. Goodbye Palmer, we wish the new National SouthWest Campus well.
This is the sad state of affairs that we find our chiropractic colleges are drifting towards. The titanic is sinking(also known as "sick care")and the chiropractic schools are jumping on board. This type of mentality(sick care) is the reason why the US ranks #41 in the world by the World Health Organization. Enuf said!
Commitment to Palmer? The only reason that he's there is because Northwestern Mini-medical school wouldn't name him president. Thank goodness everyone there is wearing white. You know what B. J. said, "Germs hate white!"
I was disappointed to see what has become "Chiropractic" at the new clinic. I totally agree with the person who produced this clip. Dr. Owens fell over himself pandering to everything but chiropractic. The place is presented as a rehab center. Truly disgraceful. When I saw the new tag line (Because Palmer is Chiropractic), I knew that things were going downhill quickly. Palmer is no longer a place that I can recommend to others as a place to learn Chiropractic.

Umm.. for everyone that has said that Palmer is getting so far away from Chiropractic for PT..
There are 8 hours of PT in the curriculum.
The total curriculum is 300+ hours.
At least that argument didn't get blown out of proportion and everyone is all on the same page.
And everyone knows that the best way to advance a profession is to bicker on youtube... verrry professional.

Chiropractic is about improving the expression of health via the nervous system by removing subluxations (i.e. interference.)
mydoctorjake 2 years ago
The nerve interference theory was disproven in 1973 by ES Crelin. Look it up.

The afferant model of subluxation proves straight chiropractic. This is not chiropractic and it is a shame to real Chiropractors.

The chicken or the egg huh?!
astout76 3 years ago
Hum, who influenced who, the chicken or the egg.
astout76 3 years ago
This is not true. Not true at all. I suggest you go into the Palmer archives and read exactly in what context things were done and what was done. What you have stated is a popular fallacy that is not grounded in truth.. BJ never ever taught PT and PT has been around longer than the 20s it was under a different name.
chilkatman 2 years ago
Actually Palmer had a PT department way, way back. To much purple koolaid my fanatic friend.
whidbeydc 2 years ago
That is untrue. It is false that BJ had a "PT" department. Totally untrue. And even 25 years ago when I graduated PCC did not have PT in the clinic. And the joke about this is that these people obviously don't know what they are doing. They make it look like a health spa. If they want to do PT they should take some lessons from national. national would never present itself like a "spa". Oh and I hold a degree from National as well. But this is really bad. Believe me this is a joke.

I'd rather by-pass the DC office and go right to a DPT for manual therapy or perhaps go to a DO for OMT. I've never seen a PT or a DO at a shopping mall doing screenings, but have seen PT offices at athletic events doing post-event therapies--never a DC though.
rank101 2 years ago
Actually virtually all of PT has no scientific studies behind it. None of the modalities are researched that they use. Despite this PTs help people greatly and chiros that practice correctly do too. But PT is not all that evidence based. There just ar not studies proving most methods. That is not to knock PTs but to set the record straight. If PT was to be evidence based they would throw out virtually all their machines and rehab methods. And a good DC school is more intensive than PT

Hmmm... wonder why?
chirodc2007 3 years ago
c'mon now, it ain't THAT bad, is it?

Good for Palmer. I'm currently a student at Life (and trying to transfer to Palmer) and am sick and tired of traditionalist students who are resistant to change and turning chiropractic into a cult. Our goals as chiropractors is to help patients. There is absolutely nothing wrong with expanding our area of practice and incorporating technology.
oogoi 3 years ago
You're right - there is nothing wrong with incorporating technology - all of the thermal technology is absolutely incredible at finding the EXACT location of the subluxations. That kind of technology is phenomenal for what we do as chiropractors.
As for foot massage and ultrasound, those aren't Chiropractic and never will be. Those are therapeutic modalities that have nothing to do with the correction of subluxations. They're just good reasons to bill insurance for an easy buck.
americantiflag 3 years ago
I say you just skip Palmer (because I think there still a few principled chiropracTORS out there) and head straight for National!

NO. ADJUST SPINES AND LIVE A HEALTHY LIFE WITH YOUR PATIENTS. IT'S THE PURPOSE OF THE CHIROPRACTOR.
americantiflag 3 years ago
Adjust spines, yes. But keep in mind things like massage, PT help THE PATIENT. There is a reason why schools are heading in this direction. Because it helps the patient. They're trying to improve chiropractic and do what's best for the patient.
I'm sure attacking people just because they have an open mind about the future of chiropractic gives our profession a great reputation. Shame on all you narrow minded, hateful people.
oogoi 3 years ago
Chiropractic is not about pain and injury. Surely PT and massage help THE PATIENT, but they don't belong in the chiropractic office.
Chiropractic is about acquiring and maintaining health for life, not about fixing a transient problem. Educate your patients about the benefits of staying adjusted in terms of their overall well-being, not in terms of what is ailing them at that particular moment in time.
Chiropractors do no treat effects - they Affect causes.
americantiflag 3 years ago 3
If you want to fluff the patient and make them feel all warm and fuzzy inside....go be a physio!
swishmich 3 years ago 5

The problem with chiropractic is not it's lack of philosophy. It's people making wild accusations and claims with nothing to back them up. Dr. Wood I blame you for all of this. Part of your job is to do the proper PR for the school, the clinic, and the profession. You have failed. Altough you have succeded to make our school look like a PT school, our clinic look like a freaking day spa, and our profession look like we all went to national.
entropyxtc 4 years ago 2

For crying out loud - QUIT already. If anyone wants to know what is really happening at Palmer, search YouTube for "Palmer College" and watch the vidoe "Why should you go to Palmer". You will see students doing what they do EVERY DAY - learning to ADJUST!!!!
vacuumthequeen 4 years ago
Do Palmer students learn "how to adjust"?? Why?
Students now can use the proadjuster in the student clinic, so they don't even need to learn how to adjust.
Sadly, there will be "doctors" graduating from Palmer College of CHIROPRACTIC not knowing how to adjust with their hands... What a sad reality.
Wachalomo 4 years ago 3
Sorry...you're mistaken. Students do learn Palmer Gonstead, Diversified, PUCS, Thompson, and Extremity adjusting from some very dedicated faculty. They are held to that standard in the clinic system. why is chiropractic doomed?

This is where the interview went wrong.
pccdc03 4 years ago
We who are in the Chiropractic field understand that PT can/is part of our job and our patients' health. The problem is when it comes to the general public who has no understanding what Chiropractic is and what the benefits are. This interview showed rehab ideas, which can/is part of Chiropractic care.
pccdc03 4 years ago
The benefits of chiropractic are immense and inescapable, but the editor of this video seems more willing to treat a philosophy than he is a patient. You simply cannot decry medical orthodoxy with your own version of it.
wrldeye12 4 years ago

The irony is that you are arguing for the symptom of this video and not looking at the real problem.
ryderguy18 4 years ago 4
What if I am getting great results from my adjusting, and even better results when incorporating Myofascial release, Graston, PIR, F&D, and ancillary therapies. What if I learn these things AND start adjusting in 2nd trimester during chiro college? yes... you are right, That MUST be the wrong way. I will go flog myself now on my knees in front of a pic of BJ.
lilears4 4 years ago
I agree with you that PT does help a lot for patient rehab... But a CHIROPRACTIC college should promote chiropractic and not PT. It is just common sense.

And Palmer, of all schools, *IS* the one that does. The outcry from a vocal minority (and the author of this "commented on" video) is not showing the confidence that those of us that know the value of chiropractic. That value is not in any way diminished here. The outcry is quasi-religious in it's intolerance, not representative of the profession as a whole and not becoming of Doctors/Physicians.
lilears4 4 years ago

It looks like a PT clinic with lots of wasted space. PT is for REHAB for things like blown knees, knee surgery, broken ankles....Thats it. Pretty sad that they didn't even show the adjustment. Looks like Palmer was bought out by the medical community. Shame.
rollergirl2480 4 years ago 5
Does anyone else cringe when they get grouped in with the term "Chiropractic Physician?" You can just call me a chiropractor, I don't need the self-esteem boost of trying to look like a psuedo-medical doctor, I'm proud of what I do.

On CCE Requirements: Guys, you don't know what you are talking about. You cannot get more than handful of adjusting credits in outreach.
lilears4 4 years ago
Actually, YOU don't know what you are talking about. You used to only get a handful of credits from outreach/clinic abroad. But now students are able to get as many adjusting credits from clinic abroad as patients that they adjust.

Tumbleweeds at palmer: BECAUSE of the old school dogma :)
lilears4 4 years ago
Wow... you guys really don't get it do you.

Wachalomo 4 years ago 4
How about you settle for "a second-rate hack who likes to rip off his patients." If you aren't getting any results from your adjusting, you probably suck as a chiropractor, you should go work in the new clinic, they'll welcome you with open arms.

Is CCE aware that students are getting adjusting credit without even laying their hands on a patient and letting the faculty DC do all the work?
How about the fact that what's being taught in the classroom isn't even supported or encouraged like it should be??
Hello...CCE??????
chirocop1 4 years ago
Or how about the fact that they don't even have to get any of thier credits from the clinic anymore. They can now get all of their adjusting creits from clinic abroad, so all of the palmer grads will now be getting their clnical education from a two week trip to brazil...very sad
chirokern 4 years ago
Hey, chirokern, what trimesters do they teach graston, spinal decompression, and digital spinography in....OH WAIT...they DON'T! Sounds like a liability to me........
chirocop1 4 years ago
It would be a liability if those techniques did anything, but they don't so they might as well start blowing smoke onto their patients and singing ancient healing rituals to them. This is what happens when the person running all three colleges is a business man, NOT a chiropractor.
chirokern 4 years ago

I think it's great that the clinic does have such a nice rehab dept for students to utilize if they so choose; I am just very disappointed that this dept got most of the attention in a segment that could have promoted a great CHIROPRACTIC facility.

jandj1727 4 years ago
I really do wish that they would have focused more on the adjustment, as it truly is the cornerstone of what we do. I can't help but wonder if they edited it out? As far as the rehab center is concerned, it looks very nice and modern...which, like it or not, is impressive to people who may be prospective patients.
jandj1727 4 years ago
Guys... the original airing of this was on a local Iowa TV station. Do you think that anyone in Davenport doesn't know what they DO at Palmer? How many DC's are there in Davenport? There was no need to focus on the adjustment or set someone up on a knee chest table or do an HIO toggle...
lilears4 4 years ago
Are you kidding me...people in the QCA think they can come to Palmer to get a massage...and that's coming from someone who has lived here for 15 years as a practitioner. If people knew what Palmer is/was and the power of the adjustment, there'd be a LINE at teh new AHC...right now it's tumble weeds...
chirocop1 4 years ago 3
As far as the video, I think it's one thing for Palmer College to utilize adjunctive therapies to satisfy CCE or NBCE requirements, but to openly embrace and emphasize it on a local news story is just completely contradictory to the foundation the school was built upon.
marie7399 4 years ago 5
Palmer College is realizing that in order to be called "doctors" students need to learn and grow. Even BJ used the most modern tools he could incorporate. There is nothing wrong with what they are doing other than old graduates believing what they were told about why they weren't being taught these skills.
lilears4 4 years ago
Where did you get the idea that all chiropractors who are wellness minded utilize a "Flying 7" type adjusting protocol, no objective findings, and spend only 4 minutes per patient? In my experience, that is definitely not the case. I personally use no physiotheraphy modalities and spend a lengthy and quality amount of time with each and every one of my patients in an open healing room adjusting framework.
marie7399 4 years ago
Not all chiropractors use the "flying 7"... many do. Some have rooms with a row of adjusting tables and run along "adjusting" them either by hand or with an instrument. I am in no way saying that wellness = flying 7. But look around... we all know that they are out there.
lilears4 4 years ago
I think you need a little "flying seven" because you seem highly subluxated ;-)

Wow, I am speechless. Just what the world needs is more Medi-practors, and for those of you who think the founding fathers would not be rolling over in their graves are in the wrong profession! We cry over other professions crossing our boundaries but it seems to be okay for us to wonder wherever we want...please! What is happening here! No wonder the world is confused...look at what they see!
simplychiro 4 years ago
What the world does need is chiropractors who are willing to advance the profession without losing their identity. Not "hygenists" who want to ignore anatomy and science while quoting the green books and treating chiropractic like a religion.
lilears4 4 years ago
Harvard is teaching SMT now to MDs and DOs, PTs can do SMT. Some of the best studies on what adjusting can do for NON MSC problems are coming out of NON-DC areas (DO/PT) what do you think will happen if we sit back? Chiropractic as it grows will include everything outside of drugs and surgery to get patients well. DCs are position to be the *health* care leaders in the future. Step up to the plate and grow with the profession! If you don't, then you are only a chiropractic hygenist.
lilears4 4 years ago 2
You contradict yourself here. If non-DC are realizing how great the adjust is for Non MSC probs, how does it makes us "healthcare" leaders by embracing and promoting the "their" modalities? Chiropractic is NO LONGER separate and distinct and therefore is redundant. The maketplace WILL NOT support redundancy.
ucdc91 4 years ago 3
I help sick people get well everyday with the adjustment. What the hell are the schools teaching these kids now days? We need to put a stop to this...stop donating to these colleges..they will make the profession extinct!
rsd922 4 years ago 2
Where should chiropractic draw the line at "doing whatever it takes to get the pt better"? Can we incorporate whatever we want, but no one else can "adjust"? can't have it both ways!
ucdc91 4 years ago 4
I think that new rehab center is great, Its my opinion that Pt is an excellent compliment to the "Treatment" the adjustment that is. They very well may have included that portion of care but it may have been edited out. Or maybee it did not.

SimmaDonnah: we ARE treating chiropractic as a healthcare profession...its called physical therapy
ucdc91 4 years ago 2
Glad to see that Palmer is finally showing their docs not only the power of the adjustment, but the power of modlities... do whatever it takes to get the patient better.
To those of you who think that DD and BJ would turn over in their graves... go back and read the green books. You might learn something! Then again, you also might have to revamp your flying 7 "wellness" contract practices.
lilears4 4 years ago

SimmaDonnah 4 years ago
Wow! Why dont you and people like you over come your identy crisis and become md's. You wouldnt even have to go away mad you could just go away.
ralphdc091 4 years ago
It has nothing to do with an identity crisis. It has to do with growing as a profession. If you want to be a flying 7 hygenist and see a patient every 4 minutes while selling someone a "wellness" package, feel free. With that mindset, our profession will be nothing but glorified massage therapy in 10 years.
lilears4 4 years ago
Growth is all well and good, but uncontrolled growth is called cancer. I prefer to think of this video as helping to guide the evolution of Chiropractic by steering it onto a vitalistic path. Vitalism is not a religion, merely a philosophical point of view with a sound basis in reason.

This is the sad state of affairs that we find our chiropractic colleges are drifting towards. The titanic is sinking(also known as "sick care")and the chiropractic schools are jumping on board. This type of mentality(sick care) is the reason why the US ranks #41 in the world by the World Health Organization. Enuf said!
