Ran into Bob in Half-moon bay two years ago.. I heard 'mood for a day' by Yes, coming from around the corner, and I was like.. progressive rock? at a pumpkin festival? Wait, is that a chapman stick!!/1/?1??11
He was a great guy, gave me a few pointers for my slow clumsy process of trying to learn to play the stick.
Met Bob in Atlanta around 10 years ago...Atlanta Arts festival or something like that. He was set up under some el cheapo tent...probably from K Mart...nothing fancy or pretensious. I was simply entranced. Chatted around 15 minutes or so and have been an admirer from that moment on. And such a nice fellow. Long life, blessings and peace Bob.
Just realized what tune he's coming off of...Bill Withers USe Me. Well, it reminded me of it.
Here's a weird one...listen to U'N'I on Miles Davis' Star People, then listen to to Peri's Scope on Bill Evan's POrtrait In Jazz...makes you wonder if miles was playing this late one night and decided to riff off it..cause U'N'I' bounces right off it....
and as for a lesson, just keep in mind that you should treat each hand like it's playing a different instrument, the left a bass, and the right a guitar. The only thing that's really different is that it's tapping.
saw him at a Napa street fair a couple months back . . . mesmerized me for an hour. He was selling CD's in huge numbers . . . deserves all he has earned
Loonnnnng time ago when those things first came out, I worked for a music store that picked up the line. We never sold the first one and dropped the line. I later saw and met Bob at an arts festival in Atlanta and was shocked to see him working this instrument like Segovia. Hell of a nice guy and like you, I stood there entranced for at least an hour.
It seems the stick has taken him all over the world. He lives somewhere just North of Napa now, and I'm keeping my ear out for a local concert or other public appearance. He said his wife had just had a baby not too long ago, so presume he is sticking closer to home these day. Yes, . . . sooooo nice, so willing to share information. I think he has created a lot of good karma for himself. Love to see such wonderful talent in full bloom:-)
Cafe San Francisco has been in my collection for a long time. Bob Culbertson is awesome.

The action on those thing must be insane....

Not too bad, actually. The pickups are hypersensitive so really what you have to worry about is hitting it too hard, and causing unforseen harmonics.

Bob's running a Stick seminar here in Sydney in three weeks and playing some gigs, I can't wait!
