A bit of advice for anyone watching this: go and read Moab Is My Washpot and The Fry Chronicles. Do NOT form opinions based on this interview, rather on his own words.
Quoting Stephen Fry about this interview: " ...I dissagreed with so much of what she said. She did what was, to me, cardinal sin for a therapist, which was telling me what I ought to feel."
I used to be a Stpehen Fry fan and he was good until about 1995. Now I just see an annoying middle aged man. He is rubbish at documentaries and I can't respect him for being in QI at all. Such a nerd-fest.
@dutchgoing you seem to be very confused, actually he creates some of the best documentaries on TV, and QI is by far the best panel show on TV, thank god I set you strait and prevented you from continuing to go though the world with these misconceptions in your head
@255ad You have not set me straight. Stephen Fry used to be be very very funny until 1995. QI shows him doing something totally mediocre. It is in keeping with the low standards of television these days. I suggest you look for old clips of Fry & Laurie from the 80s or maybe some Blackadder or David Lander Investigates or a Delve Special from off the radio. I just see a fat middle aged man in his docos sneering at people behind his hand and contributing nothing at all.
@255ad None of my teachers were as annoying and smug as Fry is on QI. He wouldn't be too bad to watch except for that slimy smug turd Alan Davies. I have dipped in to see greats like Bill Bailey and Frankie Boyle, but the stale didactic format and Davies's leer has made me turn over. The hallmark of a really poor TV programme is asking yourself if it would work on the radio. QI would work on the radio, it's audience are living 40 to 60 years ago. It is slightly better than Deal or No Deal.
obviously not a real teacher, an exaggerated TV one...and he's suppose to be smug
what wrong with Alan Davies?
QI's "format" doesn't matter, like all panel shows it's just a framing device and an excuse to get a bunch of comedians around a table to tell jokes
"Frankie Boyle" is unfunny and uses cheap shock humour to get by
actually hall mark of bad panel show is being unfunny, not some arbitrary crap about working on the radio.... which by the way is true of most panel shows
@255ad Alan Davies isn't a comedian, no wayyyy, he's an annoying Essex boy and crap actor. Fry got the job because he's been all washed-up for about 15 years and one of his Cambridge chum producers gave him a break. Frankie Boyle is articulate, sharp & has a tremendoulsy dark sense of humour, why did they invite him on QI if he was crap then? QI nearly put me in a coma but I just managed to change channels before I died of having my intelligence insulted repeatedly. It was worse than school..lol
@255ad If you don't understand the simple idea of a format for a TV show being so unsuited to the medium of televsion that you could still follow it with your eyes closed, then you need to really get a basic education before dismissing the idea as 'arbitary crap'. You sound like a Daily Mail reader, completely unable to take on new ideas, even simple ones without instantly offering an aggressive response because you don't understand something. Better stick to pretentious QI.
I do understand that “on radio thing”..... a lot better then you in fact, it means a program that would work on the radio doesn’t need to be ON TV, not that programs that would work well on the radio are necessarily unfunny or unentertaining ON TV
“didactic format” what’s wrong with you that it bores you just be told interesting information
actually John Lloyd gave him the job because of his perceived gravitas, that’s why he offered it to Michael Palin first
"before I died of having my intelligence insulted repeatedly" so do you mean to say you never get fooled by the show's traps? if so PULL THE FUCKING OTHER ONE, whether you like the show or not, there is no one alive that knows all the misconceptions, I refuse to believe that any one could watch that show for more then a few episodes without finding out they where wrong about something they use to think
First of all! I am NOT..! educated in disorders or an specialist in attention deficit disorder, however.. it would seem to me, that this is not a 'disorder' so to say.. Rather than a stepping stone to some people.. I'm not sure if i get the point, since english is not my native language i get the "wording of the meaning" so to say.. But.. This IS what makes Stephen the gretness that he is..
as a non psych major pamela stephenson is a clinical psychiatrist with a doctorate she has long ago surpassed people who don't even do psychology full time and is obviously better at her job than what any psych major youtube dickhead thinks
@carlsunshine She is not a psychiatrist which is a medical doctor with a psych specialisation. She is a clinical psychologist with a Phd in that subject. She wants people to think that she is a 'doctor' in the way the wider public understand the term. She's really quite a bad therapist.
@carlsunshine The thesis was done years ago. Is that the extent of your criticism that I was 'talking shit'. Get a secondary school education at least before you give an opinion anywhere maybe?
@dutchgoing Oh sorry, I see how your in-depth critique of Pamela Stephenson which consisted entirely of 'she's not a very good therapist' is far superior to what I said. After all this is a seminar conducted by world-renowned academics and not the FUCKING COMMENTS SECTION OF A FUCKING VIDEO ABOUT AN ENTERTAINER.
Its EDITED! He probably rambled on for 20 minutes inbetween each of her interjections. Clearly these 'Psychie' people didn't pick up 'Media studies' as a minor
@themoonandsky I'm sure the host and the shows producers are watching youtube comments, holding their breath for that fleeting bit of advice that can only be provided by helpful youtube viewers.
@ScottishNonBeliever Of course, after all the most common form of therapy is pretty much talking at the therapist with them asking occasional leading questions to 'take' you in certain directions. That wasn't what I was disputing. But having a space JUST for the purpose of working through problems is sometimes the only thing that works. If someone is having problems with the business of everyday life, then something organised and somewhat formal is exactly right.
@ScottishNonBeliever You seam to be assuming a lot, without knowing what your talking about. Therapy has been one of the most helpful things I've ever done. Family and friends can sometimes be too close for their own good. An objective perspective on the situation is hugely beneficial for most cases. Also, if the problem is, like in the vast majority of cases where therapy is called for, that you cannot relate to people directly around you, then how COULD you talk to them anyway?
I would agree with @trollssuck4ever...being a psych major myself, I have been taught to "seek to understand before you seek to speak" it would seem that she walked into this interview with a 'diagnosis' per se, and cuts in whenever its affirmed by something he says. Its just annoying to watch...she needs to speak less and listen more.
I can't stop laughing when she whispers "temperature" at 10:45. She says it so sensually; it's like she's asking questions about some kinky scenario during phone sex.
As a psych major speaking here, she should just let Stephen talk. Guide the conversation rather than be in it. It's the best way to be able to elucidate what's going on in a participant's head.
@trollsSuck4ever She from New Zealand and is married to Billy Connelly a comedian from Scotland and they have known each other for decades as friends. She used to be a comedian as well on a UK skit show called "not the 9 o'clock news" but she has always had a degree in physiology and is a trained therapist.
@trollsSuck4ever as a shrink, who does it for a living and is successful enough to have her own series... i think she would know more about it than you. just an opinion ;)
A bit of advice for anyone watching this: go and read Moab Is My Washpot and The Fry Chronicles. Do NOT form opinions based on this interview, rather on his own words.
