  • i think "pala" is used when you're surprised to see/notice something that you are not expecting or opposite to what you are expecting..

  • I was taught to say 'naku!" when surprised but, i can't see you being wrong.

  • @roguemale57 I could easily be wrong, :=) I readily admit that. It's just that I'm speaking from what I hear and have experienced.

  • @roguemale57 for me, "naku" has a more negative connotation like say "argh! why u did that!?" (naku! why did u do that?!). "pala" is a pleasant surprise like you weren't expecting it.

  • @watchdog2007 Ok lang po.Payag ako, halimbawa,"ikaw pala ng nanalo ang lotto"Maraming salamat.

  • its nicer to here . wala palang masyadong tao eh. . rather than "hindi pla maraming tao e".. :)

  • Yes, Tama ka. Thank you for your helpful comments.

  • its just an expression bud :)...

  • what does "e" at the end mean as shown in "Oo nga, kasi maaga pa e"

  • In some areas of the country this is common, and in other areas, it's not used so much, but it is simply a sound that is added as emphasis.

  • I've learned that when you use "hindi" the word "pala" should come right after it

For example "Maraming tao, pala e!" but "Hindi pala maraming tao!"

  • @MagicMaximo

Tama po yan..."hindi pala maraming tao eh!" or another way saying it...

Hindi NAMAN pala maraming tao eh! In this situation you are surprised that there are no people around.

  • @Picto58 Thanks for your helpful comments!

  • Could you please comment back or message me those two sentences, such as:

    Hindi maraming tao, pala e!

    no-many-people, after all!

    please.

  • Hello Mr. Brown. Do you know the english translation of the tagalog word "sayang"? Matagal ko na ring pinag-iisipan to eh.

  • It means like "a waste". If I buy something and it's a piece of junk, I say "Sayang ang pera ko!"

  • hindi maraming tao pala e, lol, made me laugh (no offense)

    this is just a lesson,

translating english phrases or sentences doesn't mean translating it word by word, sometimes you have to scramble the words in the sentence to make it more understandable

oh and pala, it says that you were surprised, ikaw pala yun!, it was you!,

  • oh yeah, "pa" may translate in English as "still", like "Maaga pa." (It's STILL early)

  • yeah it can also mean still. when put in that sentence.

  • There's no exact translation in english for Tagalog "pala". The word is similar to how "na" (as in "tayo NA", "kumuha ka NA", etc.), "nga", and "pa" is used.

    pala: denotes sudden understanding

    na: denotes immediate action ("already")

nga: denotes affirmation (in English, affirmation as in "It IS done," putting extreme stress on "is". "Tapos na NGA.")

pa: denotes continuation. (Kukuha PA siya.)

    Anyway, very nice video!!!

'Tuloy niyo lang ho iyan! More power. :)

  • your vids rock!

my parents are filipino and this really helped me alot communicating with them.

  • So true.. sometimes my husband asks me to translate some word and I can't. You're right "pala" is pretty hard. It's always easier to translate and explain the context. lol You did pretty good at explaining it.

  • i think reading tagalog comics can help you understand or learn to pronounce in tagalog. =)

  • yeah youre ryt coz... not all of tagalog words have exact meaning in english...

  • I am 12 years old, and I find your videos very informative! I just got back from the Philippines, and I have a gigantic family there...I couldn't understand a word they were saying anywhere, but your videos have helped me a lot! I'm still having trouble with saying "nga", could you please give me some tips??

  • nga is like indeed...

  • Thanks for the great comments. It really helps.

  • I think pala is also used like By the way. Oo nga pala, kumusta na ang missis mo. Oh, by the way, how is your wife. You can't really translate it that way, but it can be used that way.

  • I agree it can be used in this context also you can use "pala" if to describe or denote if something expected did not happen or if you made a mistake and you acknowledge that mistake like say "Mali pala ang nabili kong kulay, hindi nag terno" or Hindi pala ikaw yung nakausap ko kahapon." or "Dito ko pala nilagay, sorry!"

  • I'm a filipino-american. I'm not fluent in tagalog. I was just wondering how long it took you to learn tagalog?

  • Well, I started studying it when I married my Filipina wife.....35 years ago....Wow! It's been that long!!!

  • Bud!

Your wife makes you wait for ages in that car of yours... so many times.

ever thought of putting a bed in there? Maybe a kettle?

    keep up the good videos..

  • You know, I never really realized it till I started making videos! I really DO spend a lot of time waiting for that woman!

  • nice!

  • there really are a lot of tagalog words that cant be translated into english and still retain its full meaning..

  • Mahalaga pala ang bakla sa pamilyang Pilipino YEAH!

  • Thanks for your helpful comments.

  • pala has all kinds of meaning when put in a sentence.. it can mean also, aswell, or your good translation which is after all.

  • yeah pala is a good translation as after all.

  • but there is also another meaning that we can't really translate what it means like your example.

  • or aswell..

  • i translate pala as also in english.

  • Thanks for the comments. Be sure to also read the comments on the second video about "pala". It's very interesting and educational.

  • Hey Bud, I'm pinoy and I agree with you.. I was thinking of the english translation of "pala", but i just really can't think of exact translation..."after all" woulld be the closest one but not absolutely right in all circumstances... anyway, continue what your are doing!
