I do not speak german, only a bit... I am from Hungary, and I think, here are much more Barkases than anywhere in the world :) I love them!

I mean, it is very hard to steer the wheels left or right in standing position (even if the Barkas is going slow).

I had a Wartburg and a Trabant too, it was easy to steer their wheels.

You´re right, in Germany there are not much Barkas left witch are still on the road. I think here in northern Germany i have the only one ^^

I think your "hard wheeling" is normal, my Barkas has the same problem. I had a Trabant too :) and I still have some Simson Schwalbe and S51. Sorry if my english is not the best.
