  • Wow what an amazing video now i know what those stuctures are there is one not to far from here in Atherton never been tho, plus i recently came back from St. Agnus there is very one nice there.

  • @DavideoDesign Hi there, Im glad you found this video useful - thanks for watching and commenting. If you follow the link to the Subterranea Britannica (sub brit) website from the video description, you should be able to find out a bit more information on your local ROC post. Regards, Hanglands.

  • Nice model. Well done. I like the homely touch of the ROC Journal on the table. I had the whole set apart from the last one as they didn't issue enough. I finally got one off Ebay.

As a suggestion for more equipment - how about some dosimeters and a charger unit?

They cleared everything out of our post and took it away - even the rope.

The Post is still there - close to a crumbling cliff edge. One day it'll end up on the beach!

  • @ffinnywix Thanks very much for watching and commenting.I was planning to do a better version in the future, with a bit more detailing. This was a bit of a learning exercise with the software really, and my first proper model, but I wanted to do something that interested me.I managed to acquire the journals for the period my father was an observer via ebay, and Im glad you completed your set. Its sad to see so many posts in such a terrible state. My fathers post (Sawtry) is now a mobile phone mast.

  • This is great - really enjoyed watching what you have created. So sad that many of the posts are either demolished or in a poor condition (like the one near me, for example - Mold in Flintshire).

  • @aaronjthomas Thanks for watching, and your kind comments. Indeed it is sad that such history is subject to the vandals, there are a few well preserved posts though. Your local one has a nice brick aircraft observation post though.

  • @Hanglands

Big shame about vandalism. alot of the essex ones have been demolished on the surface, and now no longer exsist, but the one thats 5 minutes from me is in rather good condition, and inside is good condition too, albeit stripped of beds and all equipment. Very interesting, these should be preserved and remembered.

  • Excellent video! Very well made on Sketchup.

I've tried to make some German Watchtowers on it but the results haven't been great so far.

May i ask, how long did it take for you to create this model?

  • @nerdishcouk Thanks a lot for watching and commenting. This little project was the product of an afternoon off work, and a couple of evenings - I was just learning Sketchup really... It couldve been a lot better than it actually is.

  • Excellent,

However no mention of the 12v Generator for charging the NICAD batteries. I was aware some didn't always have one, and had to borrow one from an adjoing post, until in the late 80;s they started to replace the old ones with Honda 12v units to bring the posts without generators up to full serviceabilty.

  • @landroversrs1 Hi there. Thanks for watching and commenting - and also for the information. Im sure theres a ton of stuff Ive missed out from this 'post' and I hope to rectify that in the future... Im still learning about these posts and the similarities and differences between them. Ive been thinking of doing a master post as an 'improved' model. Nice to get another comment from a former observer, so many thanks once again.

  • GREAT VIDEO!

I have my own restored post at SKIPSEA,on the East Yorkshire coast open to the public on Bank Holiday Monday 30th august 2010 12-4pm , Visitors will be able to see the operational equipment (of which i have a large collection)

  • @ernie99uk Hi. Thanks for watching and commenting. I just looked up your photos on 28DL. I have to say, you have done a supreme job. Currently negotiating with the wife about what to do over the bank holiday. Maybe I'll be able to pay Skipsea Post a visit.... At least if not this b/h then another. Great work, and very encouraging to see another post restored and open. Many thanks.

  • Very impressive Hanglands. I was on 15 (master) Post, 4 Group ROC, right in the heart of the Suffolk countryside. Our old post still exists, though access is through private land.

  • @planejunky Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I take it from your username that you still have the aeronautical interest! Have you ever returned to your old post since stand down? I hope its not been discovered by the vandals. Im sure there are a fair share of omissions and innaccuracies here, but Im still learning about the ROC and my fathers time in it. Just bought the great 'Tocsin Bang' DVD from Cyclops TV.

  • @Hanglands Like many Observers, we were not pleased with the decision to stand down, so I never returned to the post after Sept 91. I'm guessing that the bunks etc are still in there, although all the BT kit would've been removed. Many post hatches were welded down, though according to Nick Catford's website ours just has three padlocks. At the time I was in the ROC, I was employed by the Ministry of Defence at Wattisham with the Phantoms, so I have a big association with 11 Group RAF!

  • Nicely done - gives a very comprehensive overview of the 'holes in the ground'..!

  • @ukmotortalk Hi, many thanks for watching, and taking the time to leave a comment :)

  • Nice SketchUp work Hanglands, wondered what you'd be up to. ;)

  • @Prizmatic0 Thanks for watching mate. First punt with Sketchup, and Im pretty pleased with it. Need to find out about custom paint fills and that, and I might use it for other projects. Cheers, S.

  • Wondering where you've been these past 6 months ! working on this post lol. Well done mate. Very interesting.

    Thats a nice BT teletalk ad8010 ;o) .

How long did it take to make that video mate ????? really good and informative.

    Cheers

  • @100thbombgroup Ha Ha. Cheers mate. Ive been meaning to get in touch since the Legends weekend. Will do so shortly. Knocked this up in a couple of afternoons, first attempt at doing anything with SketchUp. Teletalk is lovely innit, I neeeed one!

  • Great video!

It's amazing how well prepared Europe was for the unthinkable.

  • @Bastimon Thanks for the comment! The threat was keenly felt, and I can remember the orange booklet called 'Protect and Survive' that you can see at about 3:55 being posted to our house with the evening news paper! There were also a load of public information films with the same name shown on TV. Im sure if you were to do a Youtube search for "protect and survive" you'd find them all.

  • @Hanglands I remember the early 80's i think it must of been. I used to stay awake at night worrying if there would be an attack. I was ten at the time. I used to think what would happen to my parents and friends. I think our school also showed us a film about nuclear war etc. How bleak and awful for any kid!

  • @itsabomberscope Yer,we came close to oblivion, and it wasnt all that long ago! How quickly people forget My favourite story to tell is when the Protect And Survive booklets were delivered to everyone, our neighbours knowing that my dad volunteered in this post, came and knocked one evening to ask if, in the event of an attack, could my dad get them in the post! Nope, was the obvious answer. But such was the fear at the time. Anyway, these posts were not designed to withstand a nuclear blast. .

  • Amazing places. Thank god they were not actually needed. Good video.

  • @itsabomberscope thanks for watching mate. Yes, thank God they werent needed, but they were staffed, such was the threat. My father volunteered in a nearby Post (now filled in, and forms the base of a mobile phone mast).
