The Super Famicom and the SNES where about the same size. The styling was slightly different (e.g. the Super Famicom was sleek while the SNES was boxy) but they were otherwise the same consoles.

The NES vs. the Famicom was a different story. In an attempt to sell the NES as a toy rather than a game console, Nintendo made the cartridges closer to the size of VHS tapes. (If you open an NES cart, you'll find lots of empty space.) This, plus the VCR slot-loader design, made the NES larger.

Agreed. Circumstantially, not only is it impossible to have the entire world collectively speak English, it's not necessary or practical. Politically and economically, the world has developed enough that it can safely support multiple languages. Plus, there's something to be said for having whole cultures develop around the evolution of a language. Making English the universal language could strip that away. Granted, knowing it is handy, but by no means is it necessary.
