I LOVE YOUR SKATING!!! I am a 49 year old just starting to ice skate. I have my whole family (hubbie and 4 kids) taking lessons. I just passed Delta. I am doing Geisha for my Delta ISI spotlight. How did you spin the fan? I can't spin mine :).
Do you ever come to florida, would love to see you in person.
Congrats on passing Delta! As for spinning the fan, I worked with the Japanese Cultural Center her in Hawaii to help me with the fan work, the fan is from Kyoto Japan and is made for this type of dance.
I have no plans right now for Florida, but I will be in Boston this summer for the ISI Worlds and then 4 days later in Cape Cod for the USFS National Showcase : )
I am so inspired by you!!!! I am a 49 year old woman just starting to learn to ice skate. I have my whole family (hubbie and 4 kids) taking learn to skate lessons. I want to skate like you!!!!! I just passed delta lvl . I am doing a Geisha Delta spotlight for ISI. How did you spin that fan?? I ordered a cloth fan that is supposed to be a dancing fan but can't figure out how to spin it.
Do you ever come to florida. Would love for my family to see you skate in person!!!!!!
Fabulously dramatic! Lots of fun to watch! No jumps necessary to make it exciting. The only thing I would like to comment on is the length of the kimono (I'm sure you have experimented with different lengths and it's hard to find the right one for skating), but somehow short just doesn't seem to work very well for a kimono (despite the fact that your legs are lovely). Other than that, your program is absolutely perfect. Thanks and keep posting more beautiful shows like this one.
Thank you so much for the comment! The costuming for this program was a major challenge! I wanted to try and keep it as authentic as possible however Geisha do not spin and jump in their kimonos :) That length was as long as I could go without hindering the skills I had to perform. The Katusura (wig) was also very heavy and with the ornaments hanging down, it too posed a challenge. It was one of my favorite performances.
You're absolutely right, I'm sure. Besides, those sleeves don't help with the aerodynamics of the spins either! Come to think of it, Peggy Flemming skated with an almost ankle-length see-through chiffon skirt (ballerina style)and it looked very dowdy and cumbersome to me, it didn't work at all either (even though ballerinas do spin and jump. Once again, love your choreography (especially the fan work), it was so much fun to watch. You are a very good skater and performer!
if the kimono was longer she might trip, the length of her skirt is about the longest youll see in skating today, in the mind of a skater this is really long like an ice dancers skirt
You are right that most skaters who wear kimonos choose this length (although I have seen ones around knee length which look great if the skater is very very slim); however, with a full headdress in this case, the look is quite imbalanced. I agree with Jennifer that this is a very tricky part in the costuming of this program and I think she did an extremely good job.
What did you place?
